When you have an Academy Award winning-director and the voices of some of Hollywood’s hottest stars, you’d think you’d have a guaranteed hit, but something about the new trailer for “Ponyo” didn’t rub me the right way. For a moment I thought my appreciation for classic animation might have been killed by CGI and the 3D craze, but then I realized my frustrations come from having no clue what’s going on. Ponyo has to save the world? She’s a fish but looks like a little girl? There’s a school of Ponyos? Between the power of Disney, genius of Hayao Miyazaki and a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey and Liam Neeson there’s got to be something good about it! Too bad we’ll have to wait and see what that is until the film hits theaters on August 14th, because the trailer certainly does nothing to raise my expectations for the film.
