TransformersTwins.jpg

The whole “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” racism controversy may make me laugh, but the film has made some serious cash. It had the biggest opening for a Wednesday release ever pulling in $60.6 million. According to Variety the film was expected to have secured another $27 million on Thursday putting the flick on track to a possible $160 five-day total. “Dark Knight” currently holds the record for the biggest five-day count with $203.8 million followed by "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" with $172.8 million and "Spider-Man 3" with $169.4 million. While taking down “Dark Knight” is unlikely, it is possible we’ll see a new #2 by the end of the weekend. In the meantime, the Skids and Mudflap criticism continues. (Check out Slash Films article on the issue here.)

“Saw V” and “The Box” better make room for another Halloween horror film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Magnolia Pictures’ Magnet Releasing branch acquired the domestic distributions rights to “The House of the Devil.” The Ti West film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, is about a college student (Jocelin Donahue) who’s terrorized while at a babysitting job. The movie hits theaters on Halloween and will also be available on demand in late September.

When I first heard a trailer for “Daybreakers” hit the web, I was sure I was going to begin this news tidbit by bashing Hollywood for the overabundance of vampire movies. “Daybreakers” is no “Twilight.” The year is 2019 and the majority of the world’s population has been transformed into vampires due to an outbreak of plague. With so few humans left, the vampires must plan for the time at which there is no blood remaining. While the majority of bloodsuckers work to find a nourishment substitute a rogue group tries to find a way to save the human race. Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe look like they’ll be great player in this film, but it’s Sam Neill that stuck out most. The guy has had little success since starring in one of my all-time favorite films, “Jurassic Park,” so I’m elated to see him in something with potential. Vampires invade theaters, yet again, on January 8th 2010.

How could a cast consisting of Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper and Ashton Kutcher get any better? I know! Why not add Topher Grace, Emma Roberts and Hector Elizondo to the list? The cast of New Line’s romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day” keeps getting better and better. According to The Hollywood Reporter, in a “He’s Just Not That Into You” style, the film focuses on five stories that are somewhat connected. Grace will play a mailroom worker who is dating Hathaway’s character while Roberts will play a young girl hoping to lose her virginity. Fun Fact: This is the first time Robert will be working with her aunt Julia.

DrakesFortune.jpg

Columbia Pictures may have found El Dorado El Dorado. The Hollywood Reporter says the studio will turn the popular video game “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” into a feature film. The game is about the descendent of Sir Francis Drake, Nate Drake. Nate thinks he knows where to find El Dorado, the golden city of South America. Not only does Nate battle a rival in his attempt to reach the fabled city first but he also encounters a number of vicious creatures along the way.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura must be a pretty happy guy right now. Not only is “Transformers” rocking the box office, but he’s also been recruited to produce “Hellified” for Paramount. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Andy Burg will be responsible for writing the script, which will involve a journey to hell, while Dan Bradley is attached to direct. Burg secured a massive six-figure deal to switch gears and go from comedy and family-film writing to penning the script for this supernatural action film.

Could Hilary Swank be flying straight to the Oscars? She already won twice for her roles in “Million Dollar Baby” and “Boys Don’t Cry” and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her nab a third for her role in “Amelia.” This trailer is deeply riveting and I wouldn’t expect any less from Mira Nair. If “Amelia” is anything like “The Namesake” there’s no doubt in my mind this film will be prominent during award season.

THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS

Reviews.jpg

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” kicked the weekend off early with its Wednesday release, therefore, we thought we’d bring you this week’s reviews a little early too! Odds are, whether or not Alison and Jeffrey enjoyed the “Transformers” sequel, all the diehard fans saw the film yesterday, but for the rest of you, be sure to check our their review before spending two and half hours at the theater.

Check out all of the reviews to see if “Transformers” is indeed worth the money it took to make or if you’re better off seeing “My Sister’s Keeper” or one of this week’s limited release films including “The Hurt Locker,” “The Stoning of Soraya M.” and “Cheri.”

Don’t forget to check your local listings to find out when you can watch the final episode of Reel Talk this weekend.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: THURSDAY, JUNE 25th

SaturnAwardWinners.jpg

“The Dark Knight” hit it big at the Saturn Awards. The Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy and Horror Films awarded Batman five statues including the ones for best action-adventure-thriller, best music, best writing, best supporting actor and best special effects. Both “Iron Man” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” won three taking home the awards for best sci-fi film and best fantasy film respectively. “Hellboy II” was named best horror film and “Wall-E” best animated film. Angelina Jolie finally got the praise she deserved for her role in “Changeling” and Robert Downey Jr. for his role in “Iron Man.” Click here to see Variety’s complete list of winners.

Senator John Kerry wants to get involved in film, but will have to get past the Federal Election Commission first. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee is requesting to use $300,000 in campaign funds for a project called “Keeping Faith.” If all goes to plan, Kerry would be an executive producer for the White Mountain Films documentary about injured Iraq war veterans. Kerry’s role would involve lining up investors and interview subjects. He won’t be receiving a paycheck for his efforts, but Kerry could get up to a 120% return on his investment.

WatchmenBD.jpg

It’s official! “Watchmen” will return to the big screen with an additional 25 minutes. Zack Snyder’s director’s cut will be shown on July 17th at four theaters in Dallas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and New York. Variety reports he made the announcement at an event promoting the July 21st DVD and Blu-ray release. I’m a big fan of the graphic novel and loved the film, but I’d rather just wait the extra four days and watch it in the comfort of my own home and not spend over three hours in a theater.

When there are multimillionaire dollar robots, wizards and vampires invading theaters, it’s difficult to get the lower budget films the attention they deserve, but one studio may have found a way. According to Variety, Gigantic Group will launch an Internet service that will give viewers access to their films. The initiative will kick off on August 26th with the documentary “Motherland” and the indie studio plans to add at least four more titles by the end of the year. For $2.99 you’ll get three days of unlimited viewing. Mark Lipsky of Gigantic explains, “Even with rave reviews, films can be off screens so quickly that the audience has no time to find them. Not only can we keep a film on screen indefinitely, but we can dramatically extend their reach into the marketplace and grow the audience in areas of the country that have never been exposed to indie films.”

TaylorScoutComptoninHalloweenII.jpg

What happened to Alessandra Torresani? Torresani’s casting in “The Runaways” must have been overturned or merely a rumor because now Variety reports that Scout Taylor-Compton will play the role of Lita Ford. Both are named on the film’s IMDB page, but Torresani’s name appears next to Ford while Taylor-Compton’s is dubbed ‘Jackie Fox (rumored).’ Nowadays you never know who to trust, but I’m going to go with Variety on this one. I don’t see much of a difference between the two girls anyway; they both kind of look the same and are relatively unknown. Maybe after “Halloween II” hits theaters and we see Taylor-Compton in a leading role we’ll know whether or not she has the potential to shine in this film.

When a film’s screenwriter can’t confirm the pic is going to be great, you might have a problem. According to Sci-Fi Wire, during a question-and-answer session at the Los Angeles Film Festival, “The Avengers” writer, Zak Penn said, “It's hard to make a good movie … we all have the best intentions, and it still might suck.” Penn better get that negativity out of his head or the film will stink! His frustration seems to have come from his experience writing the last two “X-Men” films during which he was denied permission to get the Fantastic Four involved.

Either Sandra Bullock scared him off or Ryan Reynolds just really wants to do something other than a romantic comedy, because he’s just signed on to star in something entirely different. According to Variety, Reynolds will play a guy captured in Iraq who wakes up to find himself buried in a coffin in the desert in “Buried.” At least his captors were nice enough leave him a cell phone, candle and knife. Wait, why would they leave him a phone? I sense some physiological torture coming on.

If someone hands me a box with a big red button in it and say not to touch it, there’s no doubt in my mind I’d be pushing it about two seconds later. In “The Box” we’ll see if Cameron Diaz and James Marsden can hold out when a semi-faceless Frank Langella tells them they’ll get a million dollars if they push a button, but it’ll also cause the death of someone they don’t know. Check out the film’s trailer below:

TRAILER THURSDAY

ThisWeekOnReelTalk.jpg

Reel Talk is going out with a bang. Not only will you find out what Jeffrey and Alison think of the highly anticipated “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” but they’ll also review “My Sister’s Keeper,” “The Hurt Locker,” “The Stoning of Soraya M.” and “Cheri.”

Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox return for the “Transformers” sequel. Unfortunately, the Decepticons are back as well. Luckily Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and the rest of the Autobots are there to protect their human friends when they find themselves in the middle of an epic battle. If you’re looking to tone it down a bit, you might prefer to see Nick Cassavetes’ “My Sister’s Keeper.” It’s based on the Jodi Picoult book about a young girl named Anna (Abigail Breslin) who was genetically engineered to save her sister Kate’s life. Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) has leukemia and frequently needs Anna to donate anything from blood to bone barrow. When Anna is asked to give Kate a kidney, she decides to hire a lawyer (Alec Baldwin) to help her become medically emancipated from her parents (Jason Patric and Cameron Diaz) so she can make the decision herself.

To read more about this week’s films and to see their trailers, continue reading after the jump.

We kick things back into high gear with “The Hurt Locker.” It focuses on a U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. Basically, it’s about a bunch of guys who disarm bombs in Iraq. While some team members are reckless others approach their assignments with the utmost care. Either way, all of the man undergo major amounts of emotional and psychological stress. Shohreh Aghdashloo stars as Zahra in “The Stoning of Soraya M.” It tells the true story of what happens when Zahra’s niece’s husband requests a divorce. He manages to turn the entire village against her falsely accusing her of adultery resulting in her being sentenced to death by stoning. Finally there’s “Cheri,” a romantic drama starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates and Rupert Friend. Pfeiffer and Bates play former rivals and Friend plays Bates’ character’s son. In an effort to end the love affair between Pfeiffer and Friend, Bates marries him off to a younger woman.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/24/09 at 03:15 PM | Comments (2)

Oscar.jpg

Could this be the end of Oscar snubbing? Well, probably not. There will always be films people think didn’t get the recognition they deserved, but at least now there will be less of them. Academy Motion Picture Arts and Science President Sid Ganis said “After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year. The final outcome, of course, will be the same – one Best Picture winner – but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009.” I see no harm in including more films in the running. While it will make voting more difficult for the Academy, more films will get proper recognition rather than being pushed into other categories. Nominees will be announced on February 10th, 2010 and the Oscars will be presented on March 7th.

We know he can do Bond, but can Daniel Craig thrive in a psychological thriller? After seeing “The Invasion” I have my doubts, but working with a director like Jim Sheridan could give him a shot at success. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Morgan Creek is negotiating with Craig to play the lead role in “Dream House.” He’d play a man that moves into a new house with his family to find it’s being haunted by its former occupants who were murdered there.

ZacEfronThriller.jpg

Zac Efron backed out of “Footloose” in an attempt to break free of his teen singing and dancing image and he’s clearly determined to take his career in a completely different direction. Variety reports Efron has just joined the cast of Mandate Pictures’ untitled thriller. Leslie Dixon is writing the script but keeping plot details confidential.

Kevin Spacey will be in good company in “Invention.” The Hollywood Reporter says Craig Robinson, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and Camilla Belle will all join Spacey in the film about a billionaire inventor (Spacey) who must endure eight years in prison after something goes seriously wrong with one of his inventions. After his release, he does all he can to rebuild his reputation, career and family. Robinson will play the defamed inventor’s wife’s new husband, Belle his daughter and Graham her lesbian roommate who catches Spacey’s eye. Knoxville will play a storeowner who hires the inventor after his release.

FacebookLogo.gif

It had to happen at some point. We could see work progressing on a Facebook movie shortly. According to Variety, director David Fincher has expressed interest in the Columbia Pictures film called ‘The Social Network.” The main character will be something we all know much too well, Facebook. It’ll take a look at the site’s creation by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and how it became a haven for over 200 million people. Production is expected to begin this year.

We know anything Greg Berlanti touches turns to gold when it comes to TV, but can he have the same effect on a film? Berlanti has worked on some of my favorite TV shows including “Everwood” and “Brothers and Sisters” and now he’s moving on to the dramatic feature “Life As We Know It.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katherine Heigle will join him as one of the film’s lead characters, one of two single people who agree to take care of a young girl when her parents are killed in an accident. The project is expected to be fast-tracked.

HalloweenIIPoster.jpg

Considering I didn’t love the full trailer for “Halloween II,” I’m surprised to be impressed by the new poster. I can’t tell what creeps me out more, the giant knife in Michael’s right hand or what he’s got in the left. We’ll see which of the two most accurately represents the horror flick when it hits theaters on August 28th.

James Cameron unveiled some of his $300 million baby at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam. The Hollywood Reporter says Cameron introduced a 24-minute montage, much of which came from the first third of the film. Sam Worthington plays the titular character, an avatar. He’s a remote-controlled character created by molding his crippled human form into a super-human being. Cameron says the film is packed with action especially in the final portions of the film. According to Marketsaw, “The consensus of those chosen ones who filled the seats of the RAI Auditorium for the Avatar presentation is that they witnessed something historic … Awe is the second major reaction.”

“District 9” better be as good as its advertising campaign. Not only did I love the film’s full trailer, but every image and video promoting the film has been immensely pleasurable to see. My favorite is still the ‘Support Non-Human Rights’ poster, but these new viral videos are pretty clever. Watch these two videos and be sure to check out the film’s official website which has a ton of fun material

TRAILER TUESDAY
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/23/09 at 02:00 PM | Comments (0)

When you have an Academy Award winning-director and the voices of some of Hollywood’s hottest stars, you’d think you’d have a guaranteed hit, but something about the new trailer for “Ponyo” didn’t rub me the right way. For a moment I thought my appreciation for classic animation might have been killed by CGI and the 3D craze, but then I realized my frustrations come from having no clue what’s going on. Ponyo has to save the world? She’s a fish but looks like a little girl? There’s a school of Ponyos? Between the power of Disney, genius of Hayao Miyazaki and a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey and Liam Neeson there’s got to be something good about it! Too bad we’ll have to wait and see what that is until the film hits theaters on August 14th, because the trailer certainly does nothing to raise my expectations for the film.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: TUESDAY, JUNE 23rd

YouthinRevoltPoster.jpg

Thank you Cinematical! I was getting worried that The Weinstein Company’s woes would make the release of “Youth in Revolt” even more unlikely. The film is based on C.D. Payne’s book and stars Michael Cera as Nick Twisp, a young guy suffering from raging hormones and the tendency to get himself into serious trouble. If you’ve read the book – and if you haven’t, you must; it’s fantastic – you’d know Cera is ideal for the lead role. He’ll be joined by Steve Buscemi as his father, Zach Galifianakis as Jerry the truck driver, Justin Long as Paul Saunders and Ray Liotta as Lance Wescott. The poster seals the deal. “Youth in Revolt” must be hitting theaters on October 30th as expected.

Mutants are taking over Universal Pictures. Variety reports the studio has nabbed the rights to the Larry Doyle novel “Go Mutants!” It’s a teen comedy packed with some of your favorite creatures like Gort from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and the creature from the black lagoon. Of course they’ll only appear cameo-style. The film’s focus is a high school that ends up being a hotspot for the alien invasions featured in popular classic sci-fi movies. Doyle actually hasn’t even finished writing the book. Universal acquired the rights based on an outline. Doyle is expected to finish “Go Mutants!” by the end of the summer and Harper Collins will publish it about this time next year.

SpreadPoster.jpg

Ashton Kutcher is living the good life in reality and on the big screen. In his latest film, “Spread,” Kutcher plays a guy who maintains his lavish lifestyle by covertly wooing rich women. It’s business as usual until he meets a beautiful young waitress who has a secret of her own. “Spread” hits theaters on August 14th.

Who ever thought going to the zoo could be so exciting? I’d go everyday if stars like Adam Sandler, Cher, Jon Favreau, Sylvester Stallone and Judd Apatow voiced the animals. According to Variety, Sandler’s character will be a monkey, Cher’s a giraffe, Favreau will voice a bear, Stallone a lion and Apatow an elephant in the MGM live-action comedy “The Zookeeper.” Those will be some of the animals trying to teach a zookeeper (Kevin James) some lessons in love so he can win back the woman of his dreams. Shooting will begin at the end of the summer and the film will hit theaters on October 8th, 2010.

Cher.jpg

We actually have a double dose of Cher movie news today. Variety also reports the singer will join fellow vocalist, Christina Aguilera in Screen Gem’s “Burlesque.” Aguilera’s character is a small-town girl who shows off her big voice at a neo-burlesque club on Sunset Boulevard and Cher will play the club’s manager. A number of Cher’s songs have been featured in movies but this will be the first time Cher will sing and star in a film.

Noah Ringer is the star of this highly anticipated film and its brand new teaser. He plays Aang, the last member of the Air Nomads and the incarnation of the world with the power to control all four elements called the Avatar. Check out the teaser for M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender:”

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: MONDAY, JUNE 22nd
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/22/09 at 04:48 PM | Comments (1)

DeppAliceinWonderland.jpg

We’re less than a year away from the release of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and the pictures are pouring in. Even though I’ve be looking forward to seeing concept art from the film, I wish Burton had waited a little closer to March 5th, 2010 to release these images because now I’m even more anxious for the film to hit theaters. You’d think the best part about these photos would be seeing Hollywood superstars portraying some of your fairytale favorites, but it’s the makeup and costume design that’s astounding. I barely even recognized Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter! Be sure to click here and check out all of the photos at USA Today and here to see the ones at Yahoo! Movies.

We may not care much for the individuals responsible for dubbing the voices of Hollywood stars, but maybe that’s just because the majority of Americans don’t see films where dubbing is a necessity. I kind of doubt people in countries where dubbing is a common practice even care much for these professional voiceover artists. Well, Focus Features is looking to give a man in the sound booth some attention. Variety reports “The Dubber” is a buddy comedy starring French actor Alain Chabat as a man who does the French dubbing for a popular movie star. When this star goes missing, Chabat’s character sets out to track him down.

MoneyballCover.jpg

I’m glad I didn’t bother to read “Moneyball.” According to Variety, Columbia Pictures decided to drop the movie based on the popular Michael Lewis book about Bill Beane, an Oakland A’s general manager who came up with a way to get great players at low costs. Even with Steven Soderbergh attached to direct and Brad Pitt all set to star as Beane, no studio was willing to finance the project.

If anyone can create a realistic looking goblin, it’s Charles Gibson. Not only has he won visual-effects Oscars for “Babe” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” but he’s also worked on the entire “Pirates” franchise and “Terminator Salvation.” Now, according to Variety, Gibson is getting the chance to call a film his own by directing the family comedy “The Goblin.” Geoff Rodkey’s script focuses on a family that moves into a new home to find that someone is already living there, a goblin.

JulianneHough.jpg

Reality TV is taking over the world! We’ve seen Spiedi rise to tabloid fame, Jamie Chung of “The Real World: San Diego” make it to the silver screen and who could forget that “The View’s” Elisabeth Hasselback first hit the airwaves as a contestant on “Survivor.” Now it’s Julianne Hough of “Dancing with the Stars” turn to hit it big. According to Variety, Hough will star opposite Chase Crawford in Paramount’s remake of “Footloose.” Could this be the new John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John? Crawford teaches Hough to act and Hough gives the “Gossip Girl” star dancing lessons.

You better make time to watch Entertainment Tonight today. Not only will they show exclusive footage from “Beastly” starring Vanessa Hudgens, but they’ll also air pieces of M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender.” Take a look at the segment teaser below:

After watching “Spring Breakdown” I have little hope for a female version of “The Hangover.” Hopefully the new comedy Universal Pictures just picked up, “Business Trip” will have some potential. Stacey Harman wrote the script about a group of women who do everything but work on their corporate trip. Normally I’d say a project like this would come down to the cast. In “Spring Breakdown’s” case, the comedic triple threat of Rachel Dratch, Parker Posey and Amy Poehler couldn’t even get the job done.

Halloween may be four months away, but you can celebrate early when Rob Zombie’s “Halloween II” hits theaters on August 28th. We’ve seen bits of Michael Myers’ return to Haddonfield, Illinois in the teasers, but now we can watch him terrorize his sister (Scout Taylor-Compton) in the film’s first full trailer. Check it out below:

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: FRIDAY, JUNE 19th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/19/09 at 11:02 AM | Comments (0)

SamMendes.jpg

Focus Features has Sam Mendes for two years. Variety reports the studio has made a first-look deal with Mendes, which includes “Butcher’s Crossing” and “Middlemarch.” Mendes is already set to produce “Butcher’s Crossing,” an epic about a man who decides to move to a small town in Kansas to hunt Buffalo herds over pursuing a Harvard education, but may take on directorial duties as well. “Middlemarch” is based on George Eliot’s novel about a provincial English community in the 1830s.

Common and Queen Latifah are just right for Fox Searchlight’s “Just Wright.” Latifah will play a sports trainer who falls for a professional basketball player (Common) while helping him recover from a serious injury. According to Variety, shooting will begin mid-July in New York.

CityIsland.jpg

The winner of this year’s Heineken Audience Award at Tribeca has a distributor. Variety reports Anchor Bay acquired the rights to send “City Island” to theaters in North America, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The film starring Andy Garcia, Julianna Margulies, Alan Arkin and Emily Mortimer is expected to hit theaters in the U.S. later this year.

Inferno Entertainment and Magnet Media Group have assembled an impressive group of test subjects. According to Variety, Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood and Cam Gigandet have all signed on to join the cast of “The Experiment.” The psychological thriller is a remake of the German original about a group of men who agree to participate in an experiment in which some act as prison guards and others as prisoners so researchers can see how their levels of power and control effect the subjects. Brody will play the leader of the prisoners while Whitaker will be a guard corrupted by power.

PandorumPoster.jpg

Check out this freaky new poster for “Pandorum” from Coming Soon. The sci-fi thriller, due out on September 4th, stars Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as a pair of crewmembers who wake up aboard an abandoned spaceship with no recollection of who they are. You think that’s scary? Things get even more terrifying when they realize they’re not alone.

DreamWorks has ghosts on the brain. First and foremost, the film, which is known internally as “Boo U.,” has just been given a writer. Jon Vitti is set to pen the screenplay for the film about a ghost who fails at his job and has to go back to school. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg announced “Boo U.” could hit theaters in late-2012. There’s also the project “Freakers” involving a story told from a ghost’s point of view, but that one’s inactive. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there’s also a third ghost concept in the pitch stage.

A “Scream” movie without Neve Campbell? According to Ace Show Biz, the trilogy’s leading lady will not be involved in the fourth film. Screenwriter Kevin Williams twittered “Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won't do it. This sucks." Is Campbell really that busy that she can’t even do some sort of cameo? Actually, she is. She’s starring in NBC’s “The Philanthropist” and is involved in some movie projects. Courtney Cox and David Arquette are in negotiations to reprise their roles, but there’s no guarantee. At least Wes Craven is definitely involved. Sidney Prescott may be the protagonist in the murderous rampages but Craven is the series’ driving force.

OnSetRobinHood.jpg

That photog better run because Russell Crowe doesn’t look happy. Coming Soon has a bunch of new photos from the set of Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” in Freshwater West Beach in Wales. Click here to check out their entire gallery.

In “Cold Souls” Paul Giamatti plays Paul Giamatti, an actor who thinks he has found the key to happiness: soul extraction. Paul undergoes the process, which involves the removal of the soul and the subsequent deep-freezing procedure. Unfortunately, the results aren’t exactly what he’d hope for and eventually discovers he’s been a victim of soul-trafficking. Check out the trailer below.

THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/18/09 at 05:00 PM | Comments (0)

You’re getting an extra long weekend, Reel Talk style. Normally we post Jeffrey and Alison’s reviews on Friday, but this week we’re going to give you a head start on planning your time at the theater.

They take a look at the national releases “The Proposal” and “Year One,” as well as the limited releases “Whatever Works,” “Dead Snow,” “Food Inc.” and “Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love.” Basically, you’re either going the comedic route or seeing a documentary. Well, I guess “Dead Snow” can count as a comedy and a horror film.

After you’ve checked out all of the reviews be sure to click here and watch Jeffrey’s entire interview with the star of next week’s release, “The Stoning of Soraya M.,” Shohreh Aghdashloo.

SOMETIMES WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT… NO, I EXPECTED IT.
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/18/09 at 02:58 PM | Comments (0)

Wait; have I seen this movie before? Well, not really, but I have seen a number of other films where Judy Greer plays the witty friend, Aaron Eckhart’s sole purpose is to act as eye candy and Jennifer Aniston plays Rachel Green. Is there anything innovative about “Love Happens” that I missed?

JOHN CUSACK FIGHTS FOR HIS LIFE IN ‘2012’
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/18/09 at 02:43 PM | Comments (0)

I’m always excited to hear that a new trailer has hit the Internet, but I was especially elated to find out there’s finally a full version of the trailer for “2010.” All of the questions I found myself asking after watching the teaser have been answered. The problem is, I don’t know if they were the answers I was hoping to get.

As with any end-of-the-world film, directors run the risk of devoting too much attention to the special FX and not enough to the dialogue. I was reminded of a number of other apocalyptic films like “Independence Day,” “Deep Impact,” “War of the Worlds” and “Knowing” but never got the sense that “2012” was going to be something unique.

I don’t want to completely knock this film. The majority of moviegoers, including myself, are simply suckers for a disaster film. Who doesn’t love seeing precious landmarks ravaged by cataclysmic events?

Theaters will get a double dose of comedy with this week’s new national releases “The Proposal” and “Year One.” There are even two limited release films that have the potential to give you a good laugh, Woody’s Allen’s latest “Whatever Works” and the comedic horror movie “Dead Snow.” If you’re looking for something more serious, there are the documentaries “Food Inc.” and “Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love.”

We’ve been plagued by a slew of romantic comedy busts, but could Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds squash the trend? In “The Proposal” Bullock plays Margaret Tate, the super strict boss of Ryan Reynolds’ character Andrew Paxton. In an effort to avoid deportation, she convinces him to marry her and the new couple travel to Alaska to share the news with Andrew’s family. In “Year One” Jack Black and Michael Cera play a pair of caveman banished from their homeland. They travel through the ancient world bumping into a number of historical figures including Cain and Abel (David Cross and Paul Rudd), Adam and Eve (Harold Ramis and Rhoda Griffis) and Abraham and Isaac (Hank Azaria and Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

To read more about this week’s new releases and to watch their trailers, continue after the jump.

In “Whatever Works” Larry David plays a chess teacher who takes in a homeless girl from the south played by Evan Rachel Wood. “Dead Snow” is an offbeat Norwegian horror film about a group of medical students who are hunted down by Nazi zombies while on a ski vacation.

“Food Inc.” is a documentary that exposes the inhumane practices involved in the industrial production of meat as well as the production of grains and vegetables. It only takes a look at the abuse of power by major food companies resulting in the unhealthy eating habits of Americans. “Youssou N’Dour: I Bring What I Love” also focuses on a sensitive subject, how the world views Islam. By creating a deeply spiritual album, Senegalese pop star Youssou N’Dour tries to send a positive message, but ends up creating religious controversy in his country.

EMMYS CHANGE ON-AIR DATE
Posted by Natalia Urbanowicz on 06/18/09 at 01:00 PM | Comments (1)

EmmyStatue.gif

Originally conflicting with MTV’s Video Music Awards, the Emmys change their airdate to September 20th, 2009 and will be squaring off against the Giant-Cowboys game. Variety reports the Emmy’s were originally set for Sept. 13, when MTV informed them they had that day already locked along with the venue and sponsorship agreements. The Emmys made a smart decision to not compete with another award show and I’m happy they resolved the situation so now I can watch both. In the meantime, the Emmys will be announcing their nominees July 16th so stay on the look out for that!

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: THURSDAY, JUNE 18th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/18/09 at 10:48 AM | Comments (0)

ReeseWitherspoonPharmGirl.jpg

Reese Witherspoon is set to star in Universal’s comedy “Pharm Girl.” No, it’s not some cliché story about a city girl who moves to a farm and eventually falls for a local guy and grows to love her new home. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s about a woman ‘who gets a job at a pharmaceutical powerhouse but begins to see the underbelly of the industry as she rises through the company's ranks.’ Witherspoon will also produce the film under her Type A banner.

Apparently going to mental institutions is all the rage amongst Hollywood’s hottest young actresses. You’ve got Vanessa Hudgens, Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Jamie Chung and Abbie Cornish being admitted for Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” and now Danielle Panabaker will join Amber Heard in a padded cell for John Carpenter’s “The Ward.” Heard will play a girl sent to a psychiatric facility in which she meets Panabaker’s character who has a thing for orderlies. The Hollywood Reporter says Mamie Gummer will also be playing one of the patients.

MissionImpossibleFour.jpg

It’s official; J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise will unite to co-produce a fourth “Mission: Impossible.” At the moment Cruise is only set to produce, not star in the film. But there is a chance they’d bring back Ethan Hunt and keep Cruise in the starring role. Taking the reboot route is also an option which would require them to cast a younger star. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they will aim for a 2011 release.

Soon you’ll have some new handprints to stick your own hands in and take a goofy picture. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Russell Crowe, Adam Sandler, James Cameron, John Cusack, Colin Firth, Gale Anne Hurd, Alan Menken, Randy Newman, Emma Thompson, Mark Wahlberg, Bill Maher, Chris Berman, Jon Cryer, Peter Graves, Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sam Waterston, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, the Funk Brothers, Alan Jackson, Chaka Khan, Van Morrison, Marco Antonio Solis, ZZ Top and the late Roy Orbison will have their names added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010.

BrunoUKPremiere.jpg

I don’t think anyone expected any less from Sacha Baron Cohen at the U.K. premiere of “Bruno.” Check out Bruno’s version of the Buckingham Palace guard uniform. According to Ace Show Biz, Bruno said, "I just wanted to do something that was flattering for the royal family. Something that the queen - I'm not talking about Elton John - would really appreciate." We’ll get the chance to see all of Bruno’s antics, when the film opens in the U.S. on July 10th.

The other day we told you about Shia LaBeouf revealing a fifth “Indiana Jones” film is in the works and now producer Frank Marshall has confirmed that the project is underway. Marshall suggested to Empire Online that the film could be nearing the script development stage. He said, "It's really about the script. Once we see that, we'll see. We're not going to wait another 20 years. We'd all love to make another one. I'm anxious to hear the idea!"

FunnyPeopleFakeMovies.jpg

Looking forward to Judd Apatow’s “Funny People?” Slash Flim has compiled some material to keep you satisfied until July 31st. The film’s main character, George Simmons (Adam Sandler), is a comedy star. Naturally, the movies that brought him to fame are slightly on the ridiculous side. Check out this article to get some information about the films and to see where they pop up in the real film.

MEET THOMAS HADEN CHURCH

Thomas Haden Church has come a long way since “George of the Jungle.” After doing a few excellent dramatic films including “Sideways” and “Smart People,” Thomas decided to show his funny side in “Imagine That.” He dropped by the Reel Talk studio to chat with Jeffrey about working with Eddie Murphy in the Disney comedy and to talk about some of his upcoming projects like “Easy A” and even a little film called “John Carter of Mars!”

THINGS GET COLD AND DARK IN WHITEOUT
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/17/09 at 04:44 PM | Comments (0)

I really hate the cold, so “Whiteout” looks especially horrifying to me. Kate Beckinsale stars as a US marshal sent to Antarctica to investigate a murder just three days before the continent’s six month long winter begins. The trailer isn’t half bad, literally. The droning voiceover in the first portion makes the film come off as some sort of history lesson, but once the violence is revealed you know you’re in for something terrifying. Check out the trailer below:

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/17/09 at 04:17 PM | Comments (0)

IngloriousBastersItalyPoster.jpg

I liked the character posters, but this international poster from Bad Taste for “Inglorious Basterds” really rocks. Let’s hope the domestic version is as visual stimulating. Oh, and that the actual movie is good too.

The final “Harry Potter” film hits theaters on July 15th, 2011 making the fantasy-loving teen demographic a wide-open target. Framelight Productions will take advantage of the opportunity with a live-action version of “Tom Trueheart,” the children’s book trilogy written by British author Ian Beck. The original book, “Trueheart,” was published in 2007 and introduced us to a young boy, his older brothers and the Land of Stories. “Tom Trueheart and the Land of Dark Stories” hit shelves last year and Beck is currently working on the third book called “Tom Trueheart and the Land of Myths and Legends.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Framelight may begin to utilize the $60 million budget mid-2010. Framelight’s Robert L. Robinson Jr. is confident the story will appeal to adults even though it’s aimed at younger audiences.

BrideofFrankenstein.gif

Neil Burger may be the man responsible for bringing “Bride of Frankenstein” back to life. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog, Universal and Imagine are in talks with Burger to write and direct the remake. The 1935 original film shows what happens when the monster from 1931’s “Frankenstein” asks Henry Frankenstein to make him a wife. Even though the doctor manages to bring a mate to life, she rejects the monster. About five years ago, when Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini were set to pen the script, the film was to take place in contemporary New York and focus on a dying woman that’s brought back to life, but now that Burger may be on board, the plot is expected to be radically different.

Who gets cast in two high profile films and quits? Sean Penn. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Penn is taking a year off. He’s dropped out of “The Three Stooges” as well as the crime thriller “Cartel.” While the news is a major blow to both productions, “Stooges” is taking the hardest hit. When you’re working with Hollywood heavyweights like Jim Carrey and Benicio del Toro, the time needed to recast the role of Larry could create availability issues putting both Carrey and del Toro’s involvement at risk.

StepfatherPoster.jpg

Good cast, good plot, good trailer. The Screen Gems remaking of “The Stepfather” starring Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward, Penn Badgley and Amanda Heard is looking creepy! Badgley stars as a kid that returns home from military school to find out his mother has a boyfriend, David (Walsh). The family’s path to happily-ever-after is destroyed when David’s dark side is revealed. Check out the brand new trailer from Bloody Disgusting by clicking < AHREF= http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=10834>here.

I know “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic Park III” took away from the glory of the original film, but that was eight years ago. It couldn’t hurt to give the franchise another shot. Well, it doesn’t matter what I think because according to io9, producer Frank Marshall said the chances of a fourth film happening are slim to none. To make matters worse, Marshall confirmed work is still being done to get a new “The Neverending Story” film up and running.

Can Jason Sudeikis make the leap from TV to the big screen? We’ll find out soon because he’s set to join Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler in “Bounty Hunter.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy is about a bounty hunter (Butler) assigned to track down his ex-wife (Aniston) who’s skipped out on bail. Sudeikis will play a guy who mistakenly thinks he’s the woman’s boyfriend and follows her after she goes on the run.

GIJoeCharacterPOster.jpg

Word on the street is that “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” isn't doing too hot. There have been numerous reports of dismal screen tests and rumors that Paramount isn’t happy with the final product. But, according to Cinematical, some people have high hopes for the film. The site also posted this character poster of Marlon Wayan’s Ripcord which is an improvement from the last good vs. evil image.

I don’t normally find myself saying this about a musical, but I can’t wait for “Fame” to hit theaters on September 25th. The teaser trailer showed the film had some potential and now the full version proves it. The music sounds great, the dancing is enthralling and the script even seems to have some substance.

THE STONING OF SORAYA M. PARALLELS CURRENT IRAN SITUATION
Posted by Natalia Urbanowicz on 06/17/09 at 04:12 PM | Comments (1)

StoningofSorayaM.jpg

“The Stoning of Soraya M.” is being released next weekend and describes the life of an Iranian woman who tells a journalist about her life in Iran and the corrupt situation. Sadly, this movie seems to parallel the present day situation in Iran, we notice this when journalists cover riots and rallies. However, Iran has begun the steps to ban foreign press. Today, Iran banned the foreign press from any text, print and TV output in covering opposition rallies in Tehran. It is speculated that the cause of this new ban is because forces loyal to Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad killed eight opposition supporters. Maybe the current president wants to shut us out but Iranian youth are using Facebook and Twitter to stay strong during the new elections even if their Internet speeds are similar to those of dial-up. Be sure to check your local theatre listings to find where you can watch this heart-breaking true story. (Source)

TRAILER TUESDAY

Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn a couple? Steve Zahn in a film that’s not a comedy? You’d think this would be a recipe for disaster, but after watching the trailer I’m actually looking forward to seeing “A Perfect Getaway.” Cliff (Zahn) and Cydney (Jovovich) decide to go on an adventurous honeymoon to the remote beaches of Hawaii. Everything is great until they find out someone is terrorizing the backpackers in the secluded paradise. Check out the trailer below and click here to see the brand new poster from Cinoche. “A Perfect Getaway” will hit theaters on August 14th.

TEEN CHOICE AWARD NOMINEES

TeenChoiceLogo.jpg

“Twilight” nabbed the most Teen Choice Award nominations … duh. It received 12 nods including best drama and best romantic movie. Robert Pattinson was nominated for best actor in a drama, Kristen Stewart for best actress in a drama and Cam Gigandet for best villain. Nikki Reed and Ashley Greene will be up for favorite female fresh face and Taylor Lautner for favorite male fresh face.

It’s also no surprise that the film to get the second highest number of nominations was “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.” Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale will go head-to-head for best actress in a musical and so will Corbin Bleu and Zach Efron for best actor in a musical.

“The Hangover” has only been in theaters for two weeks but earned a nomination for best rockstar moment for the Mike Tyson’s cameo scene. Even “Watchmen” got some attention thanks to Malin Akerman being nominated for best actress in an action adventure film. REEL TALK MIXTAPE: TUESDAY, JUNE 16th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/16/09 at 12:14 PM | Comments (0)

UpGrossArticle.jpg

According to Variety, “Up” is on its way to be the second-highest-grossing Pixar film ever. So far, “Up” has secured $187.4 million at the domestic office and will likely surpass “Ratatouille’s” $206.4 million, “Wall-E’s” $223.8 million and maybe even “The Incredibles’” $261.4 million. The only Pixar film “Up” is unlikely to catch is “Finding Nemo” which took in a whopping $339.7 million. The one event that may burst some of the film’s balloons is the release of Fox’s 3D cartoon “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” on July 1st.

Natalie Portman will dance for Darren Aronofsky. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Portman will play a ballerina battling a rival dancer in the supernatural thriller “Black Swan.” The paranormal element of the plot is that it’s unclear whether this rival is a real person or just a figment of Portman’s character’s imagination. The film was originally set up at Universal back in 2007, but the script has been rewritten and is now the property of Phoenix Pictures and Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures. If sold immediately, filming could begin as early as this year.

LeonardDiCaprioNewMovie.jpg

The house is taking Leonard DiCaprio. Variety reports he’ll star in Paramount’s untitled film about online casinos. Jennifer Davisson Killoran of Appian Way will produce.

Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristin Chenoweth, Odette Yustman, Victor Garber and Betty White have all been added to the cast of Disney’s “You Again.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is about a young woman, played by Kristen Bell, who finds out her brother is marrying her high school rival. Curtis and Garber will play Bell’s parents and White will play her grandmother. Yustman will play the bride and, as reported on June 5th, Sigourney Weaver will play her rich aunt. Chenoweth’s role will be an overenthusiastic wedding playing.

StevenConrad.jpg

It looks like Columbia has karate chopped Chris Murphy and replaced him with Steven Conrad. The Hollywood Report doesn’t say why Murphy was ousted but mentions that Conrad has ties to two of the “Karate Kid” reboot’s producers one of which is Will Smith.

Paramount Pictures must have a sweet tooth because the studio just picked up screenwriter Liz Meriwether’s “Honey Pot.” Little is known about the script’s plot expect that it focuses on two female leads engaging in the world of international espionage. “Honey Pot” is an action comedy in which, according to Meriwther, “a bunch of hot, funny women get their 'Bourne' on.” Variety says Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock and Jeffrey Clifford of Montecito Co. are set to produce.

According to Shia LaBeouf, a fifth “Indiana Jones” movie is going to happen. He told BBC News that Steven Spielberg has a story in mind and that the project is moving forward.

GemmaClashTitansSet.jpg

We’ve seen Sam Worthington in action and now it’s time to get a look at his female co-star, Gemma Arterton in full Io attire. Io is Perseus’ spiritual guide during his journey to defeat Hades (Ralph Fiennes) in “Clash of the Titans.” The film is set to hit theaters on March 26th, 2010.

And I thought the new poster was steamy; check out this trailer of “The Time Traveler’s Wife.” It’s based on the novel by Audrey Niffenegger about a librarian who suffers from a genetic disorder forcing him to time travel involuntarily. Even though she never knows when he’ll be around, his wife Clare is desperately tries to build a life with him.

FoodINCBlog.jpg

I remember when ”Erin Brockovich” told the story of a motivated woman who took down a Californian company that was producing contaminated water. I could not believe that a company would cover up their mistakes instead of warning people the water was detrimental to their health. After “Erin Brockovich,” I thought we all had learned the lesson about powerful money hungry companies trying to keep their skeletons in the closet. But, eight years later, ”Food Inc.” is being released. This movie is a documentary that unveils the food industry and companies who compete against each other to put themselves ahead of consumer health. “Food Inc.”, will be in theatres Friday but until you become knowledgeable supermarket shoppers (if you aren’t already) here is a list of foods to best buy organic due to their high pesticide content.
Top 12 foods to buy Organic

  1. Peaches
  2. Apples
  3. Sweet Bell Peppers
  4. Celery
  5. Nectarines
  6. Strawberries
  7. Cherries
  8. Kale

FORGET SPACE, JASON WANTS TO GO SOMEWHERE WITH SNOW
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/15/09 at 03:01 PM | Comments (0)

FridayThe13News.jpg

Next summer may be a cold one. According to Hitfix and Shock Till You Drop, “Friday the 13th 2” may feature Jason in snow. While on the set of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, producer Brad Fuller said, "If we're going to do another ‘Friday the 13th’ we want to present something audiences haven't seen before and one of the things they haven't seen before is Jason in the snow. We just want to bring things they haven't seen before."

Fuller explained he’s aware of the vulnerability involved in making another film and will focus on making the kills unique and gruesome. He also mentioned the possibility of the second film being 3D. Fuller explained, “I suspect it will not be in 3-D, although we'd love to make a 3-D horror movie. We'd love to do it; they just don't throw that money our way."

Fuller and his co-producers, Michael Bay and Andrew Form are aiming for an August 13th, 2010 release.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: MONDAY, JUNE 15th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/15/09 at 12:10 PM | Comments (0)

ColdSoulsPoster.jpg

The poster for “Cold Souls” is just as freaky as its plot. Paul Giamatti stars as an actor who decides to store some of his soul so he can really get into a new role. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and many likened it to “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Being John Malkovich.” Check out this new poster from Cinematical.

Thomas Haden Church may have dropped by the Reel Talk set to talk “Imagine That,” but he had something else on his mind: “John Carter of Mars.” During his interview with Jeffrey THC revealed he probably will be joining Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins on the set of the Disney film about Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “A Princess of Mars.” Click here to see the video!

deathinloveposter.jpg

Check out the intense new poster for “Death in Love” from Coming Soon. Josh Lucas is front and center and stars as one of two brothers (the other played by Lucas Haas) trying to escape the dark past of their mother, a Holocaust survivor. The most troubling part of their mother’s experience was the affair she had with a Nazi doctor while in a concentration camp. Decades later the brothers still suffer the consequences of their mother’s erratic tendencies. While Haas’ character is a recluse with extreme emotional problems, Lucas’ is a successful con artist who works at a false modeling agency. Even though he’s good at what he does he’s frightened and recognizes that he must make changes in his life.

We know “Wanted 2” is coming, but is Angelina Jolie coming back? James McAvoy is great, but I have a feeling “Wanted” wouldn’t have been as successful without Jolie. The film’s director, Timur Bekmabetov, must have been aware of this because according to RIA Novosti via Coming Soon, they have a way to bring back her character, Fox, for the second film. Bekmabetov told the Russian newsite, “In July we will start preparation for the film. I think in the late autumn or winter shooting will be performed.”

DateNightSetPhoto.jpg

Coming Soon posted a gallery of images from the set of “Date Night.” The film has an impressive cast but we only get a glimpse of Tina Fey and Steve Carell shooting some sort of walk-and-talk scene. The photos may not reveal any new information about the film, but they still make me wish April 9th, 2010 wasn’t so far away. Hopefully we’ll be seeing some photos of Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Leighton Meester, Common, Taraji Henson, Kristen Wiig, Ray Liotta, Mila Kunis and Mark Ruffalo on the set too. Click here to check out all the photos.

Not only is Roy Rogers coming back to the silver screen, but he may be doing it three times. According to Variety, 821 Entertainment has partnered with the Roy Rogers Family Entertainment Corp. to work on a trilogy called “King of the Cowboys”. 812’s CEO, Eric Geadelmann, said the films will “not be a biopic, and will not be a traditional Western, but rather a family fantasy adventure. Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Trigger are quintessential figures of America, and we will introduce this franchise to a new audience while capitalizing on the millions of Roy Rogers fans worldwide."

AkiraPoster.jpg

Sorry ”Akira” fans, but Bloody Disgusting reports the live action movie is not going to happen. The 1988 manga was developed into an animated film about a post-nuclear ‘New Tokyo’ in 2019. When a biker gang member named Tetsuo gets involved with a government project called Akira, it’s revealed that he has supernatural powers.

Yawn - Maybe I have no appreciation for science or history, but I don’t think “Creation” will hold my attention for a minute. Paul Bettany stars in this Charles Darwin biopic alongside Jennifer Connelly as Darwin’s wife and Toby Jones as English biologist, Thomas Huxley. I learned about Darwin’s theory of human evolution in high school; I’d rather spend my free time learning how to fly my house via balloons and watch robots blow each other up.

Michael Myers is coming for you, via TV ads. Movie Web posted two new TV spots for “H2: Halloween 2.” The Rob Zombie film is set to hit theaters on August 28th and will focus on Michael Myers’ return to Haddonfield to take care of some family business. Check out the videos below:

BULLOCK CHANGES CLASSIC MOVIE PROPOSAL TREND
Posted by Natalia Urbanowicz on 06/15/09 at 12:02 PM | Comments (2)

TheProposal.jpg

Proposals are well thought out, emotional acts of ways to ask that special someone to spend the rest of their life with you, right? Not if you’re Sandra Bullock in “The Proposal” who proposes to her assistant Ryan Reynolds in order to avoid deportation. I would be a little disappointed with Bullock’s impersonal proposal especially after all the proposals I have seen in movies but Reynolds handles the situation like a true gentleman … for the most part. Next time Bullock tries to propose to someone she should take a lead from some of my favorite proposals.

5. ”Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994) Hugh Grant asks Andie MacDowell to marry him. "Do you think you might agree not to marry me? And do you think not being married to me might be something you could consider doing for the rest of your life?"

4. ”Runaway Bride” (1999) Richard Gere makes himself vulnerable to Julia Roberts when he lets his honest feelings come out, “Look, I guarantee there'll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you're the only one for me.”

3. ”Stepmom” (1998) Ed Harris wakes up Julia Roberts with a ring box but instead of a ring there is a string in it. He ties the string to her finger and says that he once broke the thread and will never do it again. He proceeds to slide the ring on the string and to her finger.

2. ”Love Actually” (2003) Colin Firth learns Portuguese to ask his summer housekeeper to marry him only to find out that she learned English for him.

(spoken in broken Portuguese) “Beautiful Aurelia, I’ve come here with a view to asking you to marriage me. Of course I don’t expecting you to be as foolish as me, and of course I prediction you say no, but it’s Christmas, and I just wanted to check.”
“Thank you,” responds Auriela. “That will be nice. Yes is being my answer.”
“You learned English?”
“Just in cases,” she says.

1. ”Gone with the Wind” (1938)- After Scarlett O’Hara repetitively says no to Rhett Butlers proposal he responds with, “I want you to faint. It’s what you were meant for. None of the fools you've ever known have ever kissed you like this, have they?” Butler refuses to take no for an answer and his persistency pays off when O’Hara finally gives in.

What are your favorite film proposals?

Reviews.jpg

Happy Friday! It’s the end of another week and you know what that means – new movies! This week’s selection includes “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” “Imagine That,” “Moon,” “Betty Blue,” “Tetro” and “Herb & Dorothy.”

“The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” and “Imagine That” were expected to be the weekend’s big money makers, but many are predicting “The Hangover” to dominate the box office again. According to the L.A. Times, “The Taking of Pelham” is looking like it’ll have a mid-$20-million opening and “Imagine That” is expected to take in just $10 million. Are you going to contribute to the headache “The Hangover” is likely to give these films? Check out Jeffrey and Alison’s reviews to decide what you’ll see this weekend.

SNUGGLE UP WITH RACHEL MCADAMS AND ERIC BANA

TimeTravelersWifePOster.jpg

Check out Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana getting cozy in this new poster for “The Time Traveler’s Wife” from iVillage. You’d never guess their characters have relationship problems! The film is based on the Audrey Niffenegger novel about a guy who has a genetic disorder that makes him time travel when he’s stressed. Sounds cool, right? McAdams’ character doesn’t think so. She plays his wife struggling with the effects of his condition that often keep him from her for long periods of time.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: FRIDAY, JUNE 12th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/12/09 at 11:05 AM | Comments (0)

AmyPoehlerLunchlady.jpg

Amy Poehler is going from a baby momma, to a lunch lady. The SNL alum just signed on to star in and produce Universal’s “Lunch Lady.” The film is based on a series of books by Jarrett Krosoczka, which will be unveiled at the end of July. They’re about a school cafeteria lady who serves food and covertly brings bad kids to justice. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the books titled "Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians" and "Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute" will be released this summer followed by "Lunch Lady and the Author Visit Vendetta" in December and "Lunch Lady and the Summer Camp Shakedown" in the summer of 2010.

Screen Gems has emerged victorious after an intense bidding war for Michael Cunningham’s “Beautiful Girl.” Variety reports Cunningham, who wrote “The Hours,” penned the thriller about a nerdy high school girl who returns from summer break a new person. She’s dropped six dress sizes and gets involved with her English lit teacher. Things turn deadly when the teacher’s infatuation becomes so intense he sets out to seek revenge on every student who picked on her.

OriginalMrLimpet.jpg

Kevin Lima brought fairy tale characters to life in “Enchanted” and now he’ll turn a man into a talking fish in “The Incredible Mr. Limpet.” The Hollywood Reporter says Disney recruited Lima to direct the film based on the 1964 original, which was a live-action animated hybrid. The titular character was an average guy until he’s transformed into a fish and ends up becoming a World War II hero. Robin Williams and Jim Carrey have already signed on to voice some of the characters.

Is Brittany Murphy going to get wicked? No word on the role she’ll play, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy has been cast in the psychological thriller “Something Wicked.” The film is about a teenage couple whose lives are consumed by turmoil when the young girl’s parents are killed.

DannyBoyle.jpg

Danny Boyle is going to get cozy with Fox Searchlight and Pathe Pictures. According to Variety, Boyle signed a three-year contract which requires the studios to finance his films, Searchlight to handle domestic distribution and Pathe to deal with foreign areas. Searchlight is responsible for the delayed triumph of “Slumdog Millionaire.” Warner Bros. was originally in charge of the film’s domestic distribution, but at the last moment, Searchlight stepped in helping the Oscar-winning film to become one of the most successful indie films in history.

The modern version of “Gulliver’s Travels” has another cast member. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris O’Dowd will join Jack Black, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet and Emily Blunt in the big-budget comedy from Fox.

KristenStewartAsJoanJett.jpg

Take a look at Kristen Stewart rocking out as Joan Jett. Well, I wouldn’t say she’s rocking out, but she is rocking the Jett Joan hairdo! The picture comes from Jezebel and gives us our first look at the main character of “Runaway.” Hopefully a photo of Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie will come next.

It’s no surprise that Guillermo del Toro was able to recruit Andy Serkis (Gollum), Ian McKellen Gandalf and Hugo Weaving (Elrond) to reprise their “Lord of the Rings” roles for “The Hobbit,” but at least he threw in some new plot details. According to G4, del Toro told BBC Radio he might remold some subplot material particularly elements involving Gandalf. He also addresses the status of Smaug the Dragon. They’ve been working on the creature for eight months, but he still expects it to take another six or seven months to complete. Finally, and most importantly, del Toro announced that he’d be announcing the actor cast as Bilbo Baggins in just a few weeks.

TRAILER THURSDAY
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/11/09 at 04:27 PM | Comments (0)

ThisWeekOnReelTalk.jpg

Brace yourself, because this weekend is packed with more potential summer blockbusters and hidden gems. Alison and Jeffrey will discuss “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” “Imagine That,” “Moon,” “Betty Blue,” “Tetro” and “Herb & Dorothy.”

“The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” is the national release with the most potential. A group of armed men, lead by John Travolta, take over a subway train and hold the passengers hostage. Denzel Washington plays the dispatcher on duty who must negotiate with hijackers. If you’re looking for something a little more kid-friendly, you may want to see Eddie Murphy in “Imagine That.” Murphy plays a finance executive having trouble at the office. Things improve when he realizes his daughter’s imaginary friends hold the answers to his business problems.

Keep reading after the jump to learn more about the rest of this week’s films and to see their trailers.

Now for the limited release films. “Moon” is a sci-fi thriller directed by Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie. Sam Rockwell plays a lone astronaut under three-year contract to mine Helium 3 on the moon. He’s glad to be serving his final two weeks and can’t wait to be reunited with his wife and daughter, but his hopes are destroyed when something goes horribly wrong. “Betty Blue” is a 1986 French film getting another go-around at the theater in its director’s cut form. This version adds an hour of footage onto the film about a young couple who are consumed by their dangerously intense love for one another.

“Tetro” is Francis Ford Coppola’s latest piece about a struggling writer who escapes his life by moving to Buenos Aires and changing his name to Tetro. His younger brother ends up tracking him down and the two hash out their troublesome past during his stay. Lastly, there’s “Herb & Dorothy,” a documentary about a couple who amassed on of the most significant contemporary art collections in history.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE, THURSDAY JUNE 11th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/11/09 at 12:10 PM | Comments (0)

DianeLane.jpg

Are there any animal movies that aren’t sad? Now that I’m scarred from “Marley & Me,” it’s hard to get excited about Diane Lane being cast in “Secretariat” because I doubt I’ll see it. Variety reports the Disney film is about Penny Chenery’s (Lane) relationship with her 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse named Secretariat. Chenery was a typical housewife until her father fell ill and she was introduced to the world of horse racing. She took over his Virginia farm and was pressured to sell the establishment after his death. Between a dying loved one and knowing that Secretariat is eventually euthanized, this film is bound to be a tearjerker.

Just because “Inglorious Basterds” is Quentin Tarantino’s movie, doesn’t mean he gets to decide how long it is. According to The Wrap, The Weinstein Company is asking the director to return to the edit room to shave 40 minutes off the film’s 2 hour and 40 minute runtime.

LanceArmstrongBiopic.jpg

The hill to the silver screen may be steep, but the Lance Armstrong biopic is making progress. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures has recruited Gary Ross to pen the script. The story will be based on the cyclist’s book “It’s Not About the Bike” which touches on everything from his youth in Texas to his cancer diagnosis in 1996. The film’s producer, Frank Marshall explained, “We knew Gary well from is work on ‘Seabiscuit’ and thought he’d be perfect for this.”

Call me uncultured, but I have zero interest in going to museums. New York’s Museum of Modern Art could be the first museum in history to get me to walk through the doors willingly. The establishment will launch an exhibition in honor of Tim Burton that will show everything from his childhood drawings to material from films like “Edward Scissorhands,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Batman Returns.” MOMA must have known November 22nd was a special day because they’ve picked my birthday as the exhibit’s opening day. Thanks for the birthday present MOMA! You’ll have the chance to check out over 700 of Burton’s drawings, paintings, storyboards, moving-image works, puppets and costumes until April 26th.

KickAssAaronJohnson.jpg

There must be something good about “Kick-Ass” because, according to Sci Fi Wire, the film’s creator is already planning a sequel. Mark Millar, who is also the film’s producer, said, “We're planning it, because all the actors are quite young and we have to make it relatively quickly. So we'll definitely do that inside the next 18 to 24 months.” “Kick-Ass” comes from Millar’s comic book series about an ordinary kid who decides to become a superhero.

Tom Cruise may be ready for “Mission: Impossible IV,” but is J.J. Abrams? An image posted on Spoiler TV from TV Guide, reveals that Abrams said "I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on Mission Impossible 4. Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing."

GIJoeDirectorCut.jpg

According to a post on the Don Murphy message boards, the director of “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra” has been fired. The author claims that after a disastrous test screening, which earned Paramount its lowest scores ever, the studio decided to give Stephen Sommers the boot. After being locked out of the editing room, Sommers was told to pretend he was working on another film. Eventually Sommers was asked to return, but only to “save appearances.”

Justin Theroux is blowing up! After writing the scripts for “Tropic Thunder” and “Iron Man 2,” more projects were bound to come his way. You’d think subsequent ventures would also require Theroux to flaunt his writing skills, but according to Variety, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have just hired him to direct “Chief Ron.” The comedy is about the true story of Chief Ron Roberts. Despite having blond hair and blue eyes, Roberts claims he has native Mohegan heritage. He fights the courts to acquire the right to build a casino in upstate New York.

Coming Soon sets things straight with Jerry’s Bruckheimer’s upcoming films. He’s busy working on “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Times,” but still has time to plan for the future. Bruckheimer labeled a fourth “Pirates” his top priority. “The Lone Ranger,” in which Johnny Depp will play Tonto, will still happen, but it is going to have to take a backseat to other films for the time being.

Is this ad supposed to make kids want to go to Disneyland Paris? Check out this image from Super Punch of a young 'girl getting rid of her bad dreams.' It looks more like an ad for a horror movie than one for the happiest place on earth.

I WANT TO GO TO SHUTTER ISLAND
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/11/09 at 09:46 AM | Comments (1)

A good movie trailer is a double-edged sword. It shows that the film is likely to be great, but makes the months leading up to the film’s release seem like an eternity. The new trailer for “Shutter Island” is the biggest tease of all! After watching it you’ll be itching to know more about the mysterious psychiatric hospital. I’ve already watched it more times than am willing to admit, and might have to resort to buying the Dennis Lehane book just to ease my anxiety. Why can’t October 2nd be tomorrow?

Check out the trailer below, and, just in case, here’s the link to buy the book.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10th

New9Poster.jpg

Now “9” has a mesmeric poster to match its riveting trailer. Tim Burton is the producer of the film about a group of rag dolls trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world. It features the voices of Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau and Christopher Plummer. Take a look to your left to see the brand new domestic one sheet and click here to check out an international poster from Trailer Addict that shows some of the film’s secondary characters.

Owen Wilson built an altar in “Meet the Parents,” conducting a wedding in ”Meet the Fockers,” who knows what he'll be up to in “Little Fockers.” Writer John Hamburg, told IGN Wilson will be reprising his role as Kevin Rawley in the third installment and that the role will be much larger than in the first two films. “Little Fockers” will pick up five years after “Meet the Fockers,” while Pam and Greg are raising their twins.

RourkeAsWhiplash.jpg

I bet if Randy the Ram wore an outfit like this in the ring, he would have had a more successful wrestling career. Check out Mickey Rourke in full Whiplash attire filming “Iron Man 2” from USA Today. The character, also known as Ivan Vanko, is a guy who makes his own version of Tony Stark’s chest power pack and, according to Rourke, "is going to light them up.”

Max Winkler may be Fonzi’s son, but that doesn’t mean he’s searching for his own “Happy Days.” Max is taking the behind-the-scenes route to the silver screen with “Ceremony.” The film will mark his feature writing and directorial debut. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jesse Eisenberg is in negations to play the lead role, a young man that falls for an older woman who is about to get married. He enlists in the help of a friend, who’ll be played by Michael Angarano, to go to the beach town where the wedding will take place and try to sabotage the ceremony. Production will begin in the fall.

I guess when you’re an Oscar-winning writer, getting the big stars comes easily. Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell have joined the cast of William Monahan’s “London Boulevard.” Monahan, who won his Oscar for “The Departed,” adapted Ken Bruen’s novel and will get his first shot at directing when the film goes into production this week. The story focuses on a London criminal who develops a relationship with a reclusive actress after being released from prison. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Knightley and Farrell will be joining David Thewlis, Anna Friel, Ben Chaplin and Ray Winstone on the set in the British capital.

JohnFrancisDaley.jpg

“Freaks and Geeks” is finally bringing John Francis Daley the attention he deserves. It’s been nine years since the show was taken off the air, but it still maintains a huge fan base. Since then, Daley has had several minimal roles on the big and small screens. Finally, about two weeks ago, the trailer for “77” popped up. Daley stars in this film as a sci-fi loving geek counting down to the release of “Star Wars.” You can clearly tell from the trailer that Daley summons his inner Sam Weir and will likely appease the targeted demographic. Now, Variety reports that he’s been recruited to pen the script of DreamWorks’ “Cal of the Wild.” He’ll work with Jonathon Goldstein on the story which will be a comedy poking fun at the reality TV craze. The titular character, Cal Tanner, will be the star of a fraudulent survival show. When things get real, Cal must do whatever it takes to keep himself and his assistant alive. Goldstein and Daley are also co-writing a script for Disney called “Hours of Fun.”

Disney has released five images from its 2D animation film “The Princess and the Frog.” We get a look at the main characters, frogs Naveen and Tiana, as well as some secondary characters including Louie the crocodile, Tiana’s parents and Ray the firebug.

“The Warrior’s Way” is tailor-made for a kung fu enthusiast. The film’s promo trailer has hit the web revealing an immense about of special effects, Kate Bosworth playing a circus knife thrower, Jang Dong Gun’s gripping swordsmanship and the familiar voice of Captain Barbosa, I mean Geoffrey Rush.

TRAILER TUESDAY
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 9/09 at 04:11 PM | Comments (0)

Forget Ester, there’s something wrong with any movie focusing on a creepy kid. It’s been years since I’ve seen “The Exorcist,” “The Shining” or “The Omen,” but their young stars still haunt me. By the looks of this trailer, I bet “Orphan” will have a similar effect. Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga star as a loving couple who adopt a young girl named Ester. Soon after taking her home, they realize Ester isn’t as sweet as she looks.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: TUESDAY, JUNE 9th

TheJetsonsMovie.jpg

Robert Rodriguez is trying to bring ”The Jetsons” to life. According to MTV, Rodriguez said he’ll get working on a live-action updated version of the popular 60’s cartoon as soon as next year.

“The Originals” may become a family affair. The Hollywood Reporter says Bryce Dallas Howard co-wrote the script and may pass it along to her father Ron Howard to direct. Imagine will produce the film about a group of high school friends who reunite after finding out a favorite teacher is in a coma. The film isn’t only a father-daughter project, it’s also a soon-to-be brother-in-law/sister-in-law one as well. Bryce Dallas’ writing partner, Dane Charbeneau, is engaged to her sister Jocelyn.

James Franco impressed someone over at NYU. Variety reports that Franco is set to star in Jay Anania’s “In Praise of Shadows.” Anania is the head of NYU’s directing program; the same program where Franco recently completed his first year. Franco is simultaneously pursuing a master’s degree in English at Columbia University. He isn’t only doing double duty with his schoolwork, Franco will not only be starring in this film, but producing as well. His Rabbit Bandini Prods. banner will produce the film about William Vincent (Franco), a man who returns to New York City to save the woman he loves from a crime syndicate. HowlFirstImage.jpg

In other Franco news, Entertainment Weekly has the first image of him playing Allen Ginsberg in “Howl.” The film is about the controversy that developed after the publishing of Ginsberg’s poem “Howl,” which eventually made him a literary icon.

AlvinandtheChipmunks2Poster.jpg

Alvin, Simon and Theodore aren’t the only singing chipmunks in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel.” Jim Hill Media posted an image from the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas of the film’s poster revealing the Chipettes, Eleanor, Brittany and Jeanette.

“The A-Team” may really have a cast member. According to Variety, Liam Neeson is in negotiations to play Col. John ‘Hannibal’ Smith in the film based on the 1980s TV show. The debunking of the rumor that Bradley Cooper was going to play Lt. Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck, may have been a major letdown, but it turns out that it may not have been entirely false. The article says the star of “The Hangover” is in early talks to play the role!

Nia Vardalos has a thing for romantic comedies, John Corbett … and Rachel Dratch. She’ll reunite with her “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” costar in another love story. Dratch, her co-star from “My Life in Ruins,” joins playing a goofy secondary role. “I Hate Valentines Day” is the story of a woman who deals with the pain of troublesome past relationships by applying a five-date rule. Her system backfires when she meets a nice guy who defies the odds and her rules.

Is Uncle Jesse giving up his passion for music to make a movie? Well, not really Uncle Jesse, but John Stamos did tell The New York Daily News he’s working on a “Full House” movie. He explained, “I'm working on a movie idea, but it wouldn't be us playing us. I'm not 100% sure, but it would probably take place in the first few years.” Moviefone posted some genius casting suggestions: “Zac Efron as Jesse, Zach Galifianakis as Joey, Miley Cyrus as D.J., and Elle Fanning as Stephanie.” Efron seems a little young to be playing Jesse, but if Burr Steers could make us believe he was actually a young version of Matthew Perry, anything is possible.

MEET JUSTIN BARTHA
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 9/09 at 12:44 PM | Comments (0)

Justin Bartha may not be in much of “The Hangover,” but his character is still the focus of the entire film. Bartha dropped by the Reel Talk set to chat with Jeffrey about the future of the “National Treasure” series, his upcoming film “Holy Rollers” and the film that beat Disney/Pixar’s “Up” for the top spot at the box office, “The Hangover.” Click here to see Jeffrey’s entire interview with Justin and take a look at his quiz below.

DVD ROUNDUP
Posted by Natalia Urbanowicz on 06/ 9/09 at 12:32 PM | Comments (0)

As promised, Tuesday comes around every week with new DVD and TV releases. This weeks releases are not a disappointment with movies packed with interesting plots on a global and cultural level.

Gran Torino
Clint Eastwood plays Walt Kowalski, a recent widower who is unhappy with his life. When an Asian gang tries to steal Kowalski’s most prized possession, a 1972 Gran Torino, he sets out to reform the youth. Gran Torino grossed over $148 million in the US box offices and over $262 worldwide. Seems there are many people excited for this release.

The International
This movie earns its title of international when an investigation to uncover illegal banking activities spans from Berlin, to Milan to New York and to Istanbul. Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Ian Burnfield) find themselves in high stakes while trying to bring justice to one of the world’s wealthiest banks.

To see the rest of this week’s release, continue reading after the jump.

Crossing Over
Harrison Ford plays a law enforcement officer who specializes in arresting people who break immigration laws. Naturally kind hearted, Ford tries to help a Mexican woman and her child in Los Angeles. Defense lawyer (Ashley Judd) negotiates a new family for an orphaned child and arranges the deportation of a family whose 15-year old daughter is accused of having ties to terrorism. Other intersecting plots include Jim Sturgess, Ray Liotta and Alice Eve.

Fired Up
Two high school football players (Nicolas D’Agosto and Eric Christian Olsen) try to avoid another grueling summer at football camp and decide to attend cheerleading camp. Thinking beautiful women will surround them and the summer will breeze by, the head coach sees right through their master plan.

Nobel Son
Alan Rickman plays a Nobel Prize winner whose son was kidnapped for ransom. Rickman refuses to pay for his sons ransom and thus family problems begin to arise. Bryan Greenberg, Mary Steenburg and Shawn Hatosy join the cast ensemble.

The Sheild- Season Seven- Final Act

The anticipated 7th season is grittier than ever when showing the controversial corruption of L.A police officers. Taking down the Armenian mob and trying to get a homicide witness to testify are just some of the situations you will see when you watch the final season. Dedicated Shield watchers are giving it a 10/10 and sad to see the show end. The Shields final season it out on four discs, which contain 13 episodes.

‘DISTRICT 9’ POSTERS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD

District9SupportHumanRights.jpg

Sometimes it can be frustrating when you’re constantly seeing the same previews on TV or the same billboards over and over, but that is not the case with the promotional material for “District 9.” Not only are there over a dozen ads for the film, but they’re all great!

Forget images showing off beautiful scenery or the film’s main characters; we’ve got a batch of public service announcements! I can’t wait to see the bus stop image plastered on every depot in town and for the non-human sighting count to be illuminated, but my favorite of the collection has to be the one to the left. Check out all of the posters over at Trailer Addict.

TheHangoverNumberOne.jpg

Wait, you thought “Up” was taking the number one spot for a second week? Not if the boys of “The Hangover” have anything to do about it! It was originally reported that “Up” grossed $44.2 million stealing the weekend from “The Hangover” by just $0.9 million. According to Variety, an unexpectedly strong Sunday pushed the party boys passed the flying house. The final numbers are “The Hangover,” $44.9 million and “Up,” $44.1 million. Ranking third was Will Ferrell’s film “Land of the Lost” with $18.8 million; a disappointing number compared to the $30 million Universal was expecting.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: MONDAY, JUNE 8th

MonstersInc2.jpg

Nobody can keep a secret nowadays. According to Slash Film, Disney/Pixar announced Peter Docter will be making a second “Monsters, Inc.” at a special session with particular buyers at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. Even though the guests of this special session were sworn to secrecy, a number of attendees have confirmed this news, one of which is Jim Hill. Slash Film’s article mentioned that a Pixar fansite, The Pixar Blog, noticed an significant number of searches in January for items like ‘monsters 2013 pixar.’ What was interesting about these queries was that they weren’t being conducted by curious fans. They were actually coming from the Pixar.com domain.

Cam Gigandet is reveling in “Twilight” success. In fact, he is so thankful for having had the opportunity to play a vampire; he’s decided to play one again! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gigandet will join Paul Bettany in the horror Western “Priest.” The story comes from a TokyoPop comic book about a warrior priest (Bettany) who must save his niece from vampires. Gigandet’s character will be a sheriff who is half vampire. The big difference between his role in “Twilight” and this one is that this time around, he’ll be fighting on the good side. I wonder if Screen Gems is considering casting Kirsten Stewart as the niece. Gigandet tried to kill her in “Twilight;” it’d be an interesting twist to see him try to save her.

HathawayGyllenhaal.jpg

The relationship between Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal may not have worked out in “Brokeback Mountain,” but they may give it another shot. Both are in negotiations to star in “Love and Other Drugs,” based on Jamie Reidy’s nonfiction book “Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.” Gyllenhall would play Reidy, a Pfizer salesman who falls for a woman who has Parkinson’s (Hathaway). According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox 2000/New Regency hopes to begin shooting in the fall, but still hasen’t acquired all of the necessary rights.

Javier Bardem may eat, pray and love with Julia Roberts and Richard Jenkins. According to Variety, Bardem is in negations to join the cast of “Eat, Pray, Love,” a Columbia Pictures film based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir. Roberts will play the author and Jenkins a Texan whom she befriends. If all goes to plan, Bardem will play Roberts’ character’s love interest.

CallanMcAuliffe.jpg

Some of America’s favorite actors are Australian. There’s Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts. Soon we may have another young actor to add to that list, Callan McAuliffe. The 14-year-old will join Aidan Quinn, Penelope Ann Miller, John Mahoney, Anthony Edwards, Rebecca De Mornay and Kevin Weisman in “Flipped,” which will mark his American film debut. The story comes from the Wendelin Van Draanen novel about a boy and girl learning about love. The Hollywood Reporter says McAuliffe will play the young boy.

Masi Oka doesn’t only enjoy playing a hero on TV, he enjoys playing one in videogames as well. Oka came up with the idea for “The Defenders,” a film about kids who play a multiplayer video game while playing one himself. Oka, who plays MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) told The Hollywood Reporter, "You can be whoever you want to be. The question came to me: What if you had to live up to the person you created in the virtual world?" The story will involve these online gamers having to live up to their virtual characters.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” delayed again? Yes, unfortunately that news is true. But don’t worry Potter fans; the delay only involves the IMAX version of the film. TV Watch Online said the regular version of the film will hit theaters on July 15th, but the IMAX won’t be released until July 29th. The contract IMAX has with “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” states that if Paramount filmed portions of the movie with special IMAX cameras, IMAX would guarantee the film an exclusive four week run on the extra large screens. This arrangement was made back when “HP6” was set for a November release. If “Transformers” premieres on IMAX June 24th, it would be impossible for it to finish its run before “Potter” hits theaters.

Cinematical posted an entry about Worth 1000’s contest asking people to re-imagine their favorite “Star Wars” character using a celebrity. Click here to see all the entries and check out the image to the left to see my favorite.

You’d think this would be exciting news, but hearing that Kirsten Dunst will definitely be returning for “Spider-Man 4” is a bit of a disappointment. Dunst took a high-flying action film and made it drag. I couldn’t tell if she was just washed out or bored through the “Spider-Man 3.” Anyway, according to the New York Post, Todd Black made the announcement and divulged some other Spidey news. He said the alleged Peter Parker/Mary Jane Watson wedding will not be in the fourth film and that the film’s villain will not be Morbius the vampire as many have suspected.

Quiet Earth posted the trailer for Leslie Bibb’s new flick “Miss Nobody.” Sarah Jane McKinney (Bibb) may come across as a quiet secretary, but she’s hiding a dark and deadly secret. This is the first I’ve heard of this film, so I was surprised to see that Bibb is joined by an impressive list of talent: Missi Pyle, Adam Goldberg, Brandon Routh, Vivica A. Fox and Eddie Jemison. The film looks pretty good – in an unusual, unsettling and sadistic sort of way.

THIS WEEK'S REVIEWS

Reviews.jpg

Let the battle of the comedies begin. Who’ll take the top spot at this weekend’s box office? Will it be “Land of the Lost” or “The Hangover?” Actually, “Up” has a very good chance at keeping its number one position for a second week.

The more important question is, which film are you going to support? Check out Alison and Jeffrey’s reviews of “Land of the Lost,” “The Hangover,” “Away We Go,” “My Life in Ruins,” Seraphine” and “Downloading Nancy” so you can decide which one you’d like to help achieve box office success.

I know which film Justin Bartha is keeping his fingers crossed for. Check out Jeffrey’s interview with the star of “The Hangover” by clicking here.

'THE FINAL DESTINATION' PREVIEW IS EVEN MORE IN YOUR FACE THAN THE POSTER
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 5/09 at 11:59 AM | Comments (0)

Thanks to “Final Destination,” I will never get on a plane numbered 180. Thanks to “Final Destination 2,” I will never be comfortable in a dentist’s chair. (Not that I’ve ever been able to relax at the dentist anyway.) Thanks to “Final Destination 3,” I will never go tanning again. After watching the brand new preview for “The Final Destination,” I have a feeling I will never go to the carwash again. The series’ fourth installment is looking good and will likely be even more terrifying when it's given a third dimension of horror when it's released on August 28th.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: FRIDAY, JUNE 5th

NewJuliaAndJuliaPoster.jpg

“Julie & Julia” is based on two books: Julia Child’s autobiography called “My Life in France” as well as Julie Powell’s memoir. Powell began documenting her effort to cook all of Child’s 524 recipes in “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” in 2002 using a blog. That blog was redeveloped into a book, “Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen.” That story will hit the big screen on August 7th with Meryl Streep playing Julia and Amy Adams playing Julie. The two eggs from the film’s original poster have hatched and now we can see the ladies in action in this brand new poster Columbia Pictures released via Twitter.

It was pretty obvious that the success of “Star Trek” was going to get Chris Pine a lot of attention. According to Variety, after having dinner with Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, Pine decided “Unstoppable” was going to be his next project. Pine chose to play a novice conductor who joins an experienced engineer (Washington) to help catch a runaway train carrying toxic chemicals over a number of other offers. “Unstoppable” will go into production in August and steam towards a summer 2010 release.

LettersToJulietCover.jpg

Summit Entertainment has assembled an impressive cast for its adaptation of Lise and Ceil Friedman’s novel “Letters to Juliet.” Amanda Seyfried and Gael Garcia Bernal will play a couple traveling to Italy who find a note meant for Juliet. That note was written by Vanessa Redgrave’s character, an older woman searching for a man (Franco Nero) she fell in love with years ago. Seyfried’s character helps Redgrave’s find this long-lost love. Variety says production will begin in Italy on June 25th.

If all goes to plan, Sigourney Weaver will have two fun movies coming her way. According to Variety, she’s all set to star in Disney’s “You Again” and is in talks to join the cast of Greg Mottola’s “Paul.” “You Again” stars Kristen Bell as a woman who finds out her brother is marrying her high school adversary. Weaver will be playing the bride’s rich aunt. “Paul” stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as a pair of sci-fi nerds who run into an escaped alien near Area 51. We know Weaver battled ETs in the “Alien” movies, but she’s keeping her role in this film under wraps.

And you thought it was big news that Amanda Bynes was the newest actress added to the cast of “Easy A.” Get ready for this. Lisa Kudrow, Alyson Machalka, Thomas Hayden Church, Patricia Clarkson, Stanley Tucci, Penn Badgley, Cam Gigandet, Malcolm McDowell and Daniel Bird will all join Bynes and Emma Stone in the comedy. Stone plays a high school student victimized by the rumor mill. In an effort to get revenge, she spreads some nasty gossip herself. Variety reports Will Gluck will begin production on June 9th.

MaryKateOlsenBB.jpg

Mary-Kate Olsen is going to get evil in “Beastly,” the modernized version of “Beauty and the Beast” starring Vanessa Hudgens. According to Variety, Olsen will play the girl who puts a curse on Alex Pettyfer’s character, a handsome guy who is well aware of his good looks. This curse transforms him into everything he hates. Shooting will begin on June 13th in Montreal.

When you have a series as profitable as “The Lord of the Rings,” you’re bound to have some dispute over the cash. According to Variety, a judge has ruled to leave the decision in the hands of a jury regarding J.R.R. Tolkien’s claims against New Line Cinema. Over a year ago, The Tolkien Trust filed suit claiming New Line never compensated the Trust’s members. The plaintiffs said a 1969 contract guarantees them 7.5% of the film’s profit, which comes out to about $220 million. The defense requested that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ann I. Jones settle the issue herself, but she turned down their motion. The trust’s attorney said this ruling means the case will go on trial on October 19th as planned.

BrunoPoster.jpg

In other legal news, “Bruno” is facing its first suit. We knew this was coming at some point – an actress is suing NBC Universal for an incident involving Sacha Baron Cohen acting as Bruno during which she sustained severe injuries. Richelle Olson said during a charity bingo tournament, she struggled with Bruno to take a microphone after he began using vulgarities. She then claims she was attacked by his camera crew after which she had a dramatic emotional response leading to her falling on the floor and hitting her head. The suit also involves allegations that Cohen is able to arrange his stunts using false companies. It is unclear whether this incident will be shown in the film.

TRAILER THURSDAY

ThisWeekOnReelTalk.jpg

Even though this week’s two big releases tell completely different stories, both are comedies and both are expected to be hilarious. You’re going to need Jeffrey and Alison’s help to choose if you’d rather go on a time traveling adventure or have a crazy night in Vegas. In addition to “Land of the Lost” and “The Hangover,” “Away We Go,” “My Life in Ruins,” Seraphine” and “Downloading Nancy” are hitting theaters too.

In “Land of the Lost” Will Ferrell, Anna Friel and Danny McBride are sent back in time when they’re sucked into a space-time vortex. Alongside their new primate friend Chaka, the trio has to figure out how to get back to their world before they’re eaten by a T-Rex with a grudge. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis star as three groomsmen who take their husband-to-be buddy (Justin Bartha) to Las Vegas in “The Hangover.” When they wake up the morning after a big night of partying none of the guys can remember a thing and the groom is missing. Can they piece together the events of their night of debauchery and track down their friend before his wedding?

To read about the rest of this week’s films and to see their trailers, continue after the jump.

“Away We Go” stars Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski as a couple expecting their first child. They’re determined to find the perfect place to raise a family so set out on a cross-country adventure. Through a series of mishaps and encounters with unusual people, they try to figure out which location best suits them. In “My Life in Ruins” Nia Vardalos of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” plays a travel guide. While leading a group of stereotypical tourists around Greece she is plagued by calamities.

“Seraphine” is a French drama focusing on a famous German art collector named Wilhelm Uhde. He rents an apartment in a quiet neighborhood outside Paris as an escape from his hectic life, but his boisterous housekeeper won’t let him rest. His frustration turns to awe when Uhde discovers this crazy cleaning lady is actually an extremely talented artist. “Downloading Nancy” stars Maria Bello as a woman having a rough time. Rather than simply killing herself, she takes refuge in a man she meets on the Internet.

MEET DUNCAN JONES
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 4/09 at 04:48 PM | Comments (0)

You may not know who Duncan Jones is now, but you will soon, and not because he is David Bowie’s son. Duncan directed the film “Moon,” which stars Sam Rockwell as an astronaut working on the moon. He’s fulfilling a three-year contract requiring him to mine Helium 3, the gas that could cure the Earth of its energy crisis. With just two weeks left to go, his daily routine is disturbed and he loses sight of who he is and what he’s supposed to do. I must not have been the only person to love “Moon,” because Duncan has just been recruited to direct another film, “Escape From The Deep.” It’ll be based on Alex Kershaw’s novel about the famous U.S. Navy submarine Tang. It was responsible for sinking more enemy ships and rescuing more men than any other submarine in the Pacific during World War II, but suffered a devastating fate. Duncan is certainly a director to keep an eye on. Be sure to look out for Jeffrey’s interview with Duncan and watch Reel Talk next weekend to see what Jeffrey and Alison think of "Moon." For now, enjoy Duncan's quiz.

MORE POSTERS FROM THE LICENSING EXPO

Oobermind.jpg

Ain’t It Cool News has posted four more photographs of movie posters premiering at the Licensing International Expo. Check out the images for “Shrek Forever After,” “Oobermind,” “Iron Man 2” and “Spider-Man 4.”

Three of the posters may be lacking a wow factor or anything that hints at new developments, but one certainly stands out. The poster for “Oobermind” finally unveils the film’s lead characters. For those of you who haven’t heard much about the new DreamWorks film, it’s being produced by Ben Stiller and features the voices of Robert Downey Jr. and Tina Fey. The film focuses on Downey’s character, Oobermind, a villain who accidentally takes out his archenemy. You’d think he’d be reveling in his success, but without a rival, Oobermind has no purpose. He decides he needs a new good guy to fight so creates one himself. Unfortunately, this superhero wants to be a villain too. Now, Oobermind has to clean up his miss and take down this villain ironically to save the day.

REEL TALK MIXTAPE: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3rd
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 3/09 at 02:21 PM | Comments (0)

SecretLifeofHoudiniCover.jpg

Will Jeff Nathanson be able to work some magic on Larry Sloman’s Harry Houdini biography “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero?” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment has recruited Nathanson to pen the script based on the book, which claims the magician was also a British spy. The biography also focuses on Houdini’s supposed effort to expose con artists pretending to be spiritualists leading to the theory that his death was a form of payback.

Having arrangements fall through with Bill Murray was probably disappointing for Columbia Pictures, but when you have Jack Nicholson in negotiations to take his role, who cares? According to Variety, Nicholson may join the cast of James L. Brooks’ untitled romantic comedy, which already stars Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon. Witherspoon’s character is at the center of a love triangle and must decide between Rudd’s white-color executive and Wilson’s professional baseball pitcher. If all goes to plan, we’ll see the reteaming of a very successful Hollywood duo. Brooks and Nicholson worked together on the 1983 film “Terms of Endearment” as well as 1997’s “As Good as It Gets,” both of which got Nicholson an Oscar.

It’s like “He’s Just Not That Into You” for kids. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Karlin and Stu Zicherman have agreed to adapt “How to Talk to Girls” for Fox. The book was written by fourth-grader Alex Greven. Greven sold his piece at his school’s book fair until HarperCollins published it back in November.

AvengersAssemble.jpg

The Licensing International Expo is underway in Las Vegas and Ain’t It Cool News has photographs of some highly anticipated movie posters. There’s the quartet of “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers” as well as the 20-foot tall poster for “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” They also posted shots of Johnny Depp’s “Rango,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and Steve Carell’s “Despicable Me.”

ScottPilgrim.jpgRango.jpgHowToTrainYourDragon.jpgDespicableMe.jpg

Taraji P. Henson will replace Jada Pinkett Smith. Well, only for “The Untitled Karate Kid Remake.” At the MTV Movie Awards, Henson announced that she’ll be playing Jaden Smith’s mother in the new film. She told MTV, “I’m off to Beijing [soon] to work on a film.” Her character in the movie, which is rumored to be called “Kung Fu Kid,” is reportedly named Sherry and is forced to relocate with her son to China in order to keep her job.

BrolinAsJonahHex.jpgBuffShuePiranah3d.jpg

Celebrities may hate the paparazzi, but do movie stars really think the public can wait until a film is released to see them in action? Lainey Gossip posted some pictures of Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex, the titular character of the popular DC Western comic. We have TMZ to thank for this image of a ridiculously buff Elizabeth Shue on the set of ”Piranha 3D”. I spoke with Shue less than a month ago on the red carpet for “Don McKay” and she looked nothing like she does in this photo. Are we sure that isn’t one of those muscleman costumes little boys wear for Halloween?

The new “Scream” is starting to come together. According to EW.com, writer-director Kevin Williamson has offered Courtney Cox and David Arquette deals to return to the series. There’s no word whether or not they’ve accepted these deals.

OriginalTotalRecall.jpg

Now that I’ve finished reading Philip K. Dick’s “Flow My Tears, The Police Man Said,” I can understand why studios are keeping an eye on his work. His stories are absurdly convoluted yet draw you in and leave you in awe. Novels of Dick’s that have been turned into films include “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” (“Blade Runner”) and “A Scanner Darkly.” Not only are his books being picked up left and right but one is going to get the reboot treatment. “Total Recall,” which is based on Dick’s story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” is being redeveloped by Neal H. Mortiz and his team at Original Films. Dick’s story is about a man who is tormented by a recurring nightmare in which he travels to Mars and literally buys a dream vacation. This man thinks he is a secret agent and fights to overthrow the tyrannical ruler of a Martian colony. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is calling the project a ‘contemporized adoption.’

Amanda Bynes is doing double duty for Screen Gems. Variety says Bynes has signed on to co-star in “Easy A” and star in a subsequent film as well. “Easy A” will be directed by Will Gluck and star Emma Stone as a victim of the rumor mill. She’s devastated after someone claims she’s lost her virginity but takes advantage of classmates’ naivety and spreads some nasty gossip for payback. Bynes will play the puritanical popular girl at school.

Catherine Hardwicke will work with Emile Hirsch. The “Twilight” director is going from vampires to princes to bring William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to the big screen yet again. According to Variety, Hirsch is the one who came up with the idea for the modern retelling set in contemporary America. Back in 1948, a movie version of “Hamlet” nabbed the Oscar for Best Picture. Thanks to the success of “Milk,” Hirsch already has an Academy Award nominated film under his belt; could a starring role in this film gain him more recognition?

MEET SAM RAIMI
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 2/09 at 05:00 PM | Comments (1)

Sam Raimi may have strayed from his horror roots to work on the “Spider-Man” films, but he most certainly hasn’t lost his touch. His latest film, “Drag Me to Hell,” has gotten rave reviews, including positive words from Jeffrey and Alison, and has pulled in over $15 million at the box office. Raimi dropped by the Reel Talk set to talk about the movie as well the highly anticipated “Spider-Man 4.” Click here to see the entire interview and take a look at Sam’s quiz below.

There’s something for everyone coming to stores today. The couple thinks that they'll get the chance to live their dream life by moving to the suburbs to raise their two children but the monotony of their daily routines puts a strain on their relationship. Finally, there’s the war drama “Defiance.” Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell play the Bielski brothers, a real life team of siblings responsible for helping over 1,000 Jews survive the Holocaust.

TRAILER TUESDAY
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 06/ 2/09 at 11:12 AM | Comments (0)

Trailer Tuesday should be renamed Teaser Tuesday this week. Even though it isn’t a full trailer this video for “Toy Story 3” still reveals a lot about the highly anticipated film from Pixar. It features the return of some of our favorite characters including Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Hamm, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Rex and Bullseye. “Toy Story 3” will be about what happens to the gang when Andy leaves for college. It’s set to hit theaters on June 18th, 2010.

SamWorthingtonClashoftheTitans.jpg

Finally, a real picture from “Clash of the Titans.” Set photos are great, but not nearly as exciting as this image of Sam Worthington as Perseus from the latest issue of Empire magazine. Perseus is the film’s main character and the leader of a mission to take down Hades before the god of the underworld can overthrow Zeus and unleash hell on earth. Hopefully we won’t have to wait long to see images of Worthington's costars Gemma Arterton, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Alexa Davalos in character too. “Clash of the Titans” will storm into theaters on March 26th, 2010.

Todd Field is going to take us back to 1910 for the movie “The Creed of Violence.” It’s based on the Boston Teran book about two men trying to stop an arms smuggling ring from bringing weapons to Mexico. Counterpoint will publish the novel in the fall. According to Variety, Field is very selective when it comes to his work. At the moment he is only set to write the script, but Field rarely gets involved in a project to write but not direct. He most recently acted as director and writer for “Little Children” and “In the Bedroom.”

WheresWaldoCover.jpg

Universal and Illumination Entertainment found Waldo! Variety reports the studios will turn the popular book series into a family film. “Where’s Waldo” was originally called “Where’s Wally” when the first book was released in the UK back in 1987. The lead character’s name began to change as more and more countries created their own adaptations. France knew him as Charlie, Germany as Walter and he was called Holger in Denmark. It was the North American adaptation that dubbed him Waldo. The US franchise grew to include video games, a comic strip, spin-off books, magazines, toys and even a TV show.

Alyssa Milano is going to have a new boyfriend. Actually, she’s going to have two. The Hollywood Reporter says Milano has signed on to produce and star in the romantic comedy “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend.” She’ll play a woman who finds two eligible bachelors, a struggling author (Christopher Gorham) and a successful ad exec (Michael Lanes), and must decide between the two.

RomanoArt.JPG

Check out the latest post on Lou Romano’s website. Romano is a major player over at Pixar. He voiced the character Linguini in “Ratatouille,” voiced Snot Rod in “Cars” and voiced Bernie Kropp in “The Incredibles” in addition to being a production designer for the film. Most recently, Romano did some development and production work for “Up” and was kind enough to share it on his blog. The post features gouache artwork, colored pencil drawings and digital images. Click here to take a look at all of the material.

Is 50 Cent abandoning music? Probably not, but he certainly won’t have much time to work on new material. Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson has added another movie role to his growing repertoire. On top of roles in “13,” “Dead Man Running” and “Twelve,” Variety reports he’ll join Chris Klein, Adam Rodriguez and Richard T. Jones in “Caught in the Crossfire.” The police drama focuses on two homicide detectives who wind up getting involved with a group of dirty cops. Jackson’s character will be a gang-banger turned informant. Production is set to begin in October.

Did you miss the debut of the “New Moon” trailer during the MTV Movie Awards? If you did, you have to check it out over at MySpace. The trailer focuses on a not-so-happy birthday for Bella Swan (Kristen Stuart) resulting in Edward Cullen’s (Robert Pattinson) departure. But have no fear, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) is here! You must take a look for yourself; just click here. Don’t forget to take a look at the other highly anticipated films that premiered footage at the award show last night. Just click on the film name to view its clip.

Danny McBride and Natalie Portman make an awkward couple. But, then again, Portman starring in a comedy movie sounds pretty awkward too. According to Variety, the actress has just signed on to star in Universal’s “Your Highness” with McBride and James Franco. McBride co-penned the script and will play a lazy prince who must save his kingdom and rescue his brother’s fiancé. Franco will play the brother of McBride’s character and Portman that character’s love interest.

Heathcliff.png

Magic Lantern Entertainment and FitzRoy Media are giving Heathcliff the CGI treatment. Variety reports the two companies are working together to bring the comic strip housecat created in 1973 by George Gately to the big screen. “Heathcliff” became an animated TV series back in 1980 and again in 1984. The comic is still in print today being written and drawn by Gately’s nephew, Peter Gallagher. The movie is being developed as part of Magic Lantern’s Innovation Entrainment branch’s five-year output deal with Universal through which it will produce 20 family-friendly direct-to-DVD films. While the Heathcliff movie is aiming for a 2011 DVD release, Magic Lantern has the option to give it a theatrical release if they choose to do so.

It’s hard to report news involving Kristen Stuart without giggling a bit thanks to her oops moment when she dropped her Gold Popcorn statue at the MTV Movie Awards last night. I’m going to have to take this seriously because it involves a seriously good actor, Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shannon may join the cast of “The Runaways,” a film about Joan Jett’s 1970s rock band. Stewart is all set to star in the film as Jett while Dakota Fanning will play bandmate Cherie Curry.

TomSwiftCover.jpg

What happened to Tom Swift? The young inventor’s creations may have been successes in the popular sci-fi novels, but when it came to the big screen all efforts crashed and burned. The character first appeared in the 1910 series by Edward Stratemeyer and was subsequently written about by a handful of ghostwriters. The film effort began in 1914 with a proposal from Stratemeyer, which failed. A television pilot was canned in 1958 followed by the pricy musical that was dumped even after filming had begun. Another film was planned but cancel in 1974. The only non-literature Tom Swift project that took off was a television special called “The Tom Swift and Linda Craig Mystery Hour,” which starred Willie Aames as Swift and Lori Loughlin as Craig. According to Variety, a new film effort has been initiated by Columbia Pictures with Barry Sonnenfeld set to direct. Swift may have invented a number of devices that successfully solved serious world problems, but can he create a movie that can end his film diemma?

Forget Tom Swift, what happened to Halle Berry? We haven’t seen the actress on screen since 2007’s “Perfect Stranger.” Fine, having a baby may be a good reason to refrain from working for a bit, but apparently Nahla is old enough to handle mommy taking on a new project. According to Variety, Berry is considering a role in 20th Century Fox’s thriller “The Surrogate.” The film is about a couple who hires a surrogate to have their baby but finds out mid-pregnancy that the surrogate in insane.

When Nicole Kidman unexpectedly dropped out of Woody Allen’s new project, I figured he’d find another Hollywood heavyweight to fill the role. Lucy Punch may be blond and have a cool accent, but she’s no Nicole Kidman. Who is she anyway? Odds are you don’t even know who she is. She’s been in the TV show “The Class” and has had minor roles in “Hot Fuzz” and “Ella Enchanted.” There must be a good reason Allen picked Punch to join Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Punch wowed Allen during a screen test and nabbed the part. In Allen I trust, so Punch must be good.

DUNCAN JONES GOES FROM THE MOON TO THE DEPTHS OF THE PACIFIC

I’m very excited to announce that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Duncan Jones has a new project to work on. The “Moon” director has just signed on to direct “Escape From The Deep” based on Alex Kershaw’s novel. It tells the story of the famous U.S. Navy submarine Tang. It was responsible for sinking more enemy ships and rescuing more men than any other submarine in the Pacific during World War II.

On the sub’s fifth patrol, disaster struck, and it wasn’t in the form of an enemy torpedo, but one of the ship’s own weapons. The Tang released a missile on course to hit an enemy target, but malfunctioned and made a U-turn heading straight for the vessel. The impact killed 87 crewmembers instantly while some of the remaining men fought to stay alive 108 feet below the surface. Only nine men survived, four who were throw from the bridge when the torpedo struck and managed to tread water for over eight hours and the other five fled their underwater tomb through an escape trunk. Their trouble didn’t even end there. The survivors were picked up by a Japanese patrol ship and were sent to “The Torture Farm.” Even with death just around the corner the men never divulged any secrets to the Japanese and were freed in August of 1945.

Not only is this account utterly compelling, but the fact that it’s true really makes it a forceful story. It has major film potential, especially in the hands of Jones. If Jones can take a story about a lone man working on the moon and make it involving and heart wrenching doing so with the material provided by Kershaw’s novel will be an easy task. Be sure to check out “Moon” when it’s released on June 12th and watch Reel Talk that weekend to see what Jeffrey and Alison have to say about the film.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Jones when “Moon” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in May, during which he gave me fascinating explanation about how he got into film. Check out the video:

THE NIGHT BRUNO SAT ON EMINEM'S FACE ... THE MTV MOVIE AWARDS

An Oscar may be more prestige than a Golden Popcorn, but the gang at MTV really knows how to put on an award show. At one point, Kiefer Sutherland, Zac Efron and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog even spoofed the Oscar five-winner presentation with their own version when giving Ben Stiller the MTV Generation Award.

“Twilight” was clearly the night’s big winner. It took home five awards including the Best Kiss and Best Fight honor. Kristen Stewart was so excited when she won Best Female Performance; she sent her statue crashing to the floor. Clearly embarrassed, she was reluctant to join the cast and director Catherine Hardwicke on stage to accept the award for Best Movie, but did so with a smile; visibly thankful she didn’t have to speak again.

Other highlights of the night include the premiere of footage from “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Oh, and how could I forget Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen) rubbing himself in Eminem’s face? Apparently the rapper doesn’t have much of a sense of humor because he stormed out of the Amphitheatre after the incident. Some sources say the act was staged, but Eminem was visibly enraged and didn’t even stay for the rest of the show. Perhaps it was a stunt-gone-wrong? MTV posted a video of Bruno’s crash landing and accompanies it with a caption stating he was aiming for the stage, but missed. Secondary cameras were obviously prepared to focus on Eminem’s reaction, so some aspect of this event had to be preplanned.

Anyway, overall, host Andy Samberg did an excellent job. His opening was hilarious and so were his prerecorded skits. Even with some award presenters botching up their already poor jokes, Samberg kept the audience laughing throughout the entire show.
