REEL TALK MIXTAPE - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25th
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 03/25/09 at 04:16 PM

“Gatchaman” may not have a director, but at least it has a poster. Twitch Film posted an image of the poster Imagi Studios put on display at the 2009 Tokyo International Anime Fair that they spotted on a Japanese “Gatchaman” fan blog. The star of the poster is Joe Asakura, the second-in-command of a superhero ninja team. According to the article on Twitch, “Gatchman” is heading for a 2010 release.

The whole element of surprise thing didn’t work for this year’s Academy Awards, but perhaps giving moviegoers more time to see all of the nominated films will. According to an article from Varitey, the 2010 Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 7th, which is two weeks later than the typical date. The nomination announcements will also come at a later date – February 2nd. Here are the key dates posted in the article:

The still images and poster were very exciting, but Spike Jonze has certainly saved the best for last in the slew of promotional material from “Where the Wild Thing Are” being released – the trailer. You’ll be able to see the trailer attached to “Monsters vs. Aliens” in theaters this weekend, but for now, you can check it out below. Also, if you’re wondering what the awesome background music is, it’s a song called “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire. “Where the Wild Things Are” hits theaters October 16th.

“Wolverine” hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but the anticipated success of the film has led to work beginning on a sequel. Ain’t It Cool News reports that Simon Beaufoy of “Slumdog Millionaire” will pen the script. According to AICN’s source, Beaufoy’s agents encouraged him to take on the project despite Beaufoy’s reluctance to do so.

As Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood film awaits the start of production work, it recruits, yet another, talented cast member. Vanessa Redgrave has signed on to play Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, the mother of King John, who will be played by Oscar Isaacs. Redgrave will be joining Cate Blanchett, Russell Crow, Mark Strong, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle in the highly anticipated film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, back in July it was announced that filming would be pushed back to accommodate changes in the script.

Tom Hanks is front and center in the new poster for “Angels & Demons.” The poster arrived courtesy of Sony Pictures’ Twitter feed. Check out the thumbnail to the right and just click on the image to enlarge it. You can see “Angels & Demons” in theaters May 15th.

It was obvious that the success of “Slumdog Millionaire” would give Freida Pinto the opportunity to pursue a successful career and that is exactly what she is doing. She has already signed on to be in Woody’s Allen’s next project and now, Variety reports that Pinto has also boarded Julian Schnabel’s “Miral.” The film is about Hind Husseini, the founder of an orphanage after the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. The lead character will be played by Hiam Abbas and Pinto will have some sort of supporting role.

Get a look at Ben Foster in action in this image from Overture Films’ sci-fi thriller ”Pandorum.” That’s Foster participating in some sort of balancing act with Antje Traue and Cung Le on the sidelines. The film also stars Dennis Quaid as one of two crew members - the other being Foster’s character - of a spaceship that wake up alone and with no knowledge of their identities. The film is due in theaters September 4th.

When Zac Efron said he was done with the singing and dancing stuff, he was serious. According to Variety, Efron is looking to take on a more serious role in the film adaptation of Ben Sherwood’s novel “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.” The book is about a cemetery caretaker who regularly makes contact with his deceased younger brother. Production is set to begin in July, after Efron’s latest film, “17 Again,” hits the big screen on April 17th.

It looks like all of you “Veronica Mars” fans keeping your fingers crossed for a theatrical adaptation may be out of luck. The show’s creator, Rob Thomas, told the New York Post, “While the pitch [to producer Joel Silver] went well and I don't think the movie's dead, right now it's looking depressing. I think honestly if we would have had the pitch ready a year earlier, it would be a go project. The hope that we would get a quick greenlight didn't materialize. This is the least optimistic I've felt in a while." The key phrase here is ‘I don't think the movie's dead.’ There’s still the slightest glimmer of hope here, but now, you may want to be crossing your fingers and toes for the sake of this film.

QuaidClinton.jpg

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something is blocking me from imagining Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton. Well, I’m going to have to come to terms with this casting choice at some point, because Variety reports that Quaid will play the former president in the HBO film “The Special Relationship.” Michael Sheen is set to play British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Julianne Moore will play Hillary Clinton. By just looking at the title, you might think the plot revolves around the infamous relationship between Bill Clinton and a certain White House intern, but the focus of the film will actually be on the relationship between Clinton and the British Prime Minister.

Tom Hanks may be doing the toy thing again, but this time, he won’t actually be playing the plaything. Variety reports that Hanks will star in Universal’s “Major Matt Mason,” a film based on the 1966 Mattel action figure of the same name. Mason is the leader of a team of astronauts living in a space station on the moon. The article says that the Mason toy was a success during the time leading up to the first manned mission to the moon, but was discontinued in the 1970s.

Robert Pattinson is hoping to keep his heartthrob status going. Pattinson wants to stick with Summit Entertainment as long as they keep the romance movies coming. After “New Moon,” Robert is interested in Summit’s “Memoirs,” a film based on Will Fetters’ original screenplay about two lovers being torn apart by family tragedies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenny Lumet of “Rachel Getting Married” will rewrite the screenplay.

Taye Diggs is going to play a vampire. No, he’s not the latest pretty fast to be cast in the “Twilight” sequel; he’s donning the fangs for Kevin Munroe’s “Dead of Night.” According to Shock Till You Drop, Diggs will take on the role of the main villain who torments the characters played by Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington. The concept of the film comes from the Italian horror comic books by Tiziano Sclavi called “Dylan Dog.” In the comic, the title character is a nightmare investigator whose trademark is his outfit, which includes a red shirt, black jacket and blue jeans.

The new trailer for “Ice Age 3” has arrived! “Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur” features our favorite characters but in a brand new setting, a tropical paradise. Manny (Ray Romano), Sid (John Leguizamo), Diego (Denis Leary), Ellie (Queen Latifah) and Scrat discover a group of dinosaurs that managed to survive extinction in a steamy jungle layers beneath the Earth’s surface. “Ice Age 3” hits theaters in 3D July 4th.
