'The Jersey Devil'
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 10/31/08 at 01:01 PM | Comments (0)

unexplained5-1.jpgHappy Halloween everyone! Have you ever heard of a New Jersey Devil? No, not the hockey team, I'm talking about an actual devil. Well, if your answer is yes, then I guess you must be a New Jersey native just like the adored musician, Bruce Springsteen!

Bruce recently created a "Halloween" themed music video that tells the tale of this New Jersey Devil. In 1735 a woman named Mother Leeds gave birth to her 13th child, who transformed into a creepy and evil creature. His parents threw him in the river, and he now haunts the Pine Barrens in N.J.

Check out the video right here!

Trailer Thursday: "Transporter 3"

If that accent isn't enough to make you want to see the new "Transporter 3" movie, I don't know what is! Well, maybe the ACTION packed scenes could help too. Check out the new trailer for "Transporter 3" starring Jason Statham! It will be in theaters on November 26th.

The Scariest Movie of All Time
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 10/30/08 at 12:09 PM | Comments (0)

exorcist.jpgWith Halloween arriving tomorrow, I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about the scariest movie of all time. The scariest movie I have ever seen has to be "The Exorcist."

Even the thought of it gives me the chills. How could this be? It's only about a young girl in a bedroom. Well, it's because director William Friedkin brilliantly used the audience and got us to use our imagination. We never physically see the evil spirit which has possessed the young girl, and causes her to spew vomit, strange words and become (in a brilliantly unique way) one of the most terrifying images in movie history.

Max Von Sydow and Ellen Burystn head a wonderful cast, and it was veteran Lee J. Cobb's last English language movie.

e-gall-theexorcist-395x298.jpgWriter/occasional actor Jason Miller, who wrote "That Championship Season" was the other priest who helped the title player Von Sydow and you just knew that the possessed young girl (played by Linda Blair)wouldn't have a long career since, she was so committed to the role and that convincing!

It's not the same if you see it in the safety of your home on DVD. In a theater where I saw it, there was NOOOOO escape! What do you think is the scariest movie of all time? Comment me, and let me know!

Happy Halloween!

'Wendy and Lucy"
Posted by Alison Bailes on 10/29/08 at 02:27 PM | Comments (0)

18954850_w434_h_q80.jpgJust saw the upcoming "Wendy and Lucy" from filmmaker Kelly Reichardt ("Old Joy"). Michelle Williams plays an impoverished drifter...all her worldly belongings in one heap of a car along with her lone companion, her dog Lucy. Disaster strikes en route to Alaska. When her car breaks down, and she attempts to shoplift some dog food when she is arrested. When she returns to the scene of the crime after paying her fine, her beloved dog is gone.

The rest of the film follows Wendy as she tries to find Lucy. There is more heartfelt emotion in this spare, quietly powerful 80 minute drama than in 5 minutes of the over-blown, bloated star vehicle that is "Changeling". It goes to show you that you don't need a huge budget, a mega-movie star and a cloying, manipulative soundtrack to convey longing and deep loyalty. "Wendy and Lucy" has very little dialogue, no score and you could argue that not much happens. But the concern in Michelle Williams' eyes is all you need. Has the dog been stolen? Got lost? or worse...sent to the pound and likely death? I defy anyone to watch this film to the end, and not shed a tear of compassion.

Sneak Peek: Kevin Smith
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 10/29/08 at 12:37 PM | Comments (0)

Kevin Smith, a.k.a. Silent Bob made his way to our studio this week, to talk about his new movie "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." Here in New York, considering we are a "blue state," this title may not seem like a big deal. However, to many other parts of the country, this title may be a little too X-rated for their taste. So, what's going to happen to the marquee in those theaters? Well check this clip out, and see what Smith has to say about it.

Silly box office weekend
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 10/28/08 at 01:44 PM | Comments (0)

11267744_ori.jpgWhat does it tell you that a silly, badly-performed bit of drivel like "High School Musical 3" pulled in an amazing $42 million this weekend and "Saw V", which wasn't even screened for critics, a sure sign a film is a dog, and good movies like "Changeling" and "Pride and Glory" (despite its bland title), are left in the dust. For one thing, it tells you that any movie with a TV series behind it, especially one appealing to pre-teen audiences or some young high schoolers, is a surefire hit, just as any movie with the name "Beverly Hills" in its title will also lure crowds, even if it deals with talking dogs. But we keep on, hoping folks will see the movies we recommend. Sometimes they actually do!

Sweetness & 'Saw' at the Box Office
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/28/08 at 12:57 PM | Comments (0)

hsm3.jpgNever doubt the power of the teenage movie fan. The incredible debut of "HSM 3: Senior Year" is testament to that -- despite Jeffrey's thoughts on both films, which you can read in the post above this one -- with a whopping $42 million opening weekend. But just as impressive was the performance of the number two movie of last week, "Saw V", which took in $30 million. Considering it's the fifth installment of a series that is part of a genre - torture porn - that has largely fallen out of favor with the public, it's remarkable that the Jigsaw movies continue to score big returns for Lionsgate. Matter of fact, the "Saw" franchise is now the biggest horror franchise EVER, earning more than "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween."

But it still didn't come close to edging out "HSM 3." It must be music to the ears of every parent of a 'tween or teen that Disney's saccharine sweet sing-a-long was such a hit. I mean seriously, do you remember the last G-rated, non-animated picture to be a colossal hit? I can't.

400_highschoolmusical_071129_et_disney_alarkey.jpgWhatever it is about the cheesy acting (why does Zac Efron look like he's going to cry every time he sings?), catchy songs and clever choreography, plus the day-glo set designs that are part of the HSM formula, it works. And it's not just underage fans who dig it. a few of my co-workers here at 30 Rock -- who have all long since graduated from high school -- had purchased their tickets days in advance online to see the movie opening night. And they raved about it, and were already making plans to see it again!

I can't quite figure out what it is about HSM that is so irresistible, but it reminds me of that other recent cheesy high school hit, "Saved By the Bell." Like "HSM", "SBTB" had a photogenic cast, wafer-thin plotting and enough wholesomeness to choke a roomful of cynics. Zack, Slater and Screech didn't break out into song in mid-story but still, the similarities are obvious.

Speaking of music, "HSM's" soundtrack deserves a lot of credit for its success. After editing the clips from the movie for last week's show, "Rocketman" (the song from the 'big game' scene in the movie) was stuck in my head for days. I'm a sucker for a catchy song and the 'HSM' franchise is full of them.

zac-efron-vanessa-hudgens-high-school-musical-3-poster.jpgPerhaps the biggest impact of "HSM" -- besides the launching of the latest teen idol, Efron -- is that it made being 'good' cool again. As I noted at the top, getting anyone over the age of 8 into a theater to see a G-rated, live-action musical is a major achievement. Especially when gore-fests like "Saw V" are playing in the same multiplex.

Will the cast of "High School Musical" have the same lasting power as the "Saved By the Bell" crew? Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley have all carved out decent careers of varying success, "Showgirls" and "Hyperion Bay" notwithstanding. Tiffani-Amber Thiessen left prissy Kelly behind to play a skank on "Beverly Hills, 90210" and even made a Woody Allen movie! So Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and the rest have their work cut out for them.

Let's just hope none of them follows Screech's path and winds up in porn.

bolt1main-(2).jpgHere is the new poster for "Bolt." The new Disney flick with the celebrity voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus.

And, speaking of Travolta, after going from a big brunette wig and a pink sparkly dress in "Hairspray," Travolta will be sporting no hair at all in his next project, "From Paris with Love."

If you didn't get enough of Stifler's obscenity and hysterically perverted comments in the first three "American Pie" movies, Universal may have just the ticket for you! American Pie 4 may be in the works!

johnny5-walle.jpgDisney made and succeeded in their 'Johnny-5' recreation,"Wall-E." Now the studio is pushing for a Best Picture nomination... wouldn't you give this cute little guy the vote? No animated film has ever won the Academy's top honor. In fact, only "Beauty and the Beast" is the only 'Toon to ever receive a Best Picture nom.

So what do you get when you mix the Jonas Bros. and a farting dog? Apparently, a box office hit! Or so 20th Century Fox thinks. Hmm...

Mary-Louise Parker has signed up to star in "Solitary" alongside Michael Douglas. Parker will play the Oscar winner's girlfriend. Also co-starring in this Millenium FIlms feature will be Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito and Jenna Fischer.

biggie-smalls.jpgKevin Smith stopped by the other day to talk to Reel Talk about his new movie "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." Check out the entire interview right here!

He was Brooklyn's most "Notorious" rapper. The life and death story of The Notorious B.I.G., aka Biggie Smalls a.k.a Christopher Wallace, will be coming to theaters next year. Check out the trailer!

New on DVD: 'The Incredible Hulk'

hulk_bill_bixby.jpgFirst off, CONGRATS to our well-rounded viewers who correctly answered the trivia question. Reporter Jack McGee from the TV show was inspired by Victor Hugo's dogged detective Javert from "Les Miserables." Not since Lois Lane have we seen a reporter as tenacious as Jack Colvin's Hulk hunter.

Winners, your DVDs of "The Incredible Hulk" (and for you runner-ups, your copies of "The Strangers") are on the way.

More thoughts on "Synecdoche, NY"
Posted by Alison Bailes on 10/24/08 at 02:46 PM | Comments (0)

synecdoche-new-york-poster.jpgI still can't get this film out of my mind. Does that mean it was a great film? I'm not sure. But certainly the ideas and concepts in it are very meaty and mind-boggling. Writer, Charlie Kaufman likes to write about the act of creation (for instance, writing a novel in "Adaptation") and the art of creativity (puppet show in "Being John Malkovich.") In "Synecdoche" he tackles both themes.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a theatre director who wants to create something "raw and truthful" a representation of life itself. Hence the title, with the word synecdoche as a figure of speech for a part that represents the whole. In this case, Hoffman is trying to create a simulacrum and some kind of a meaning of his life. But can Art ever replicate reality? Or truth?

Struggling with feelings of inadequacy and existential angst, he hopes to find clarity through art. What he ultimately finds is that he is average, his life is insignificant and no-one is watching. We are all just extras in someone else's life.

It's a depressing realization but one that Woody Allen often broaches in his work. The solution is to enjoy life, and live well. But, Hoffman, the director is too busy playing puppet-master of his own creation to understand it all until it is too late. 83287647.jpg

By the time Dianne Wiest takes over the role of the "director" (God?) she is there to shepherd him towards his ultimate dream-state. Let's not also forget that Kaufman infuses his film with humor and acute observations about life, love, achievement in effect, the totality of existance.

After first viewing the film and in my review on "Reel Talk" I accused the ideas in the film of being imploding. The layers in Hoffman's ongoing living art (and Kaufman's cinematic one) become so convoluted that it's hard to keep track, and challenging to try.

But isn't that what great art does? Constantly challenge and raise questions? And if a film demands a second viewing...does that mean it has failed? Or is it just too full of ideas to be understood in one go around?

DVD Giveaway: 'The Incredible Hulk'

the-incredible-hulk-trailer1.jpgWant a free copy of the new & improved "Hulk" on DVD? All you have to do is know your Hulk history.

Let's reward fans of the classic TV show, which never got the respect it deserved for successfully translating the Green Goliath -- no easy task -- to the small screen during the pre-CGI era. Here's the question:

What literary character inspired David Banner's (remember, they changed his name from Bruce to David for the TV show for some silly reason) foil on the show, reporter Jack McGee?

The first five people to answer correctly get a copy of "The Incredible Hulk" DVD, courtesy of Universal Home Ent. And since we're feeling extra generous, four runner-ups will win a DVD of "The Strangers", the scary movie that co-starred Liv Tyler, who plays Betty Ross in "The Inc. Hulk."

Phony 'Flash' Film Trailer

the_flash_comic_book_image__5_.jpgOne of the most anticipated comic book adaptations is the long-discussed "Flash" movie. But it's been mired in Hollywood purgatory for some time now, so it was quite surprising to see a supposed 'trailer' for the movie pop up on YouTube. Interesting...considering that not only has production not even begun, BUT NO ONE HAS EVEN BEEN CAST IN THE FILM YET!

Football Failure
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 10/22/08 at 04:19 PM | Comments (0)

the-express-20080508065744565_640w.jpg"The Express" didn't fare well at the box office. It's a pity, because it brought long overdue glory to a true sports pioneer, Ernie Davis, the first African American college player to win the coveted Heisman trophy. It'll be interesting to see if the box office failure earlier this year of "Leatherheads,” the George Clooney football comedy, and "The Express" will give studios reason to reject future movies about football for a while. Graphic novel characters are all the rage, and sports movies, which don't do well overseas in most cases, are a tough sell.

Actors are not the only people who are casted and necessary when shooting a film... you also need extras! Not too many actors got their feet onto the set through being an extra, but Noah Emmerich did! A member of the cast in 'Pride and Glory' Noah Emmerich talks to Jeffrey about how he landed his first gig on set of a movie by playing an exuberant extra. Check it out!

angelina-jolie-changeling-blue-man.jpgThe new movie "Changeling" starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Clint Eastwood will be released this weekend. This drama story has a lot more tied into it than just a big name cast. Watch the featurette on it right here, and see how this true story overthrew the LAPD in the late 1920's.

"Lethal Weapon 5" update! Unfortunately, we won't be seeing Mel Gibson in the next "Lethal Weapon," or anyone else for that matter! Mel passed on the opportunity, and Richard Donner (the series director) concurs that "“yes, the project is pretty much dead in the water..."

No "Next time" for Terrance Howard! All you Iron Man fans, say bye-bye to Terrance Howard! Don Cheadle is scheduled to replace Terrance Howard in the next Iron Man movie! Sources reveal the change of cast is due to financial differences with Howard.

293.spielberg.steven.051208.jpgUniversal welcomes back Steven Spielberg! DreamWorks and Universal studios finally shook hands! Under agreement with Universal, DreamWorks is to produce as many as six theatrical releases per year for the next seven years! Basically, look out for some pretty awesome movies!

Live action "Mulan!" Hollywood Reporter states that film companies from China and Hollywood will co-produce the live-action film version of "Mulan." This is coming just in time to celebrate the animated versions tenth anniversary. Production set to begin in Spring 2009.

Who will win Meryl Streeps heart? Steve Martin will play opposite Alec Baldwin for the love of Meryl Streep in the new untitled Nancy Meyers ("Father of the Bride," "What Women Want") film. Production is scheduled to start February 2009.

Box office Thoughts
Posted by Alison Bailes on 10/21/08 at 09:57 AM | Comments (0)

body-of-lies-2.jpgI can’t believe that “Eagle Eye” (click to watch Jeffrey and my review on it) continues to be in the top five at the box office and that “Body of Lies” after one week has already dropped off.

The Ridley Scott political thriller is such a superior film in every way, and with Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio it’s hard to understand how it didn’t connect with audiences. I suppose it could be because of its subject matter, the “War on Terror,” and it is set in Jordan primarily. It is such a shame that people won’t go to these films.

“Eagle Eye” is a preposterous, implausible action romp that has absolutely no credibility whatsoever. I found it so completely unbelievable that I couldn’t even enjoy it on a base level. The fact that “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” is still doing so well also baffles me!!

NEW ON DVD - 'The Incredible Hulk'
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/21/08 at 09:50 AM | Comments (0)

the incredible hulk DVD.JPGThis past summer's release of "The Incredible Hulk" did a nice job of wiping away the bad taste from Ang Lee's convoluted and boring 2002 "Hulk", and also finally brought some good old-fashioned 'HULK SMASH!' to the big screen.

Far from perfect but a perfectly entertaining comic book based spectacle, "The Incredible Hulk" stars Ed Norton taking over for Eric Bana as the conflicted Dr. Bruce Banner, and Liv Tyler taking over for Jennifer Connolly as Dr. Betty Ross. The special edition DVD and Blu-ray release are loaded with deleted scenes, making-of documentaries and breakdowns of the film's 3 big action pieces. The Blu-ray comes with the exclusive 'U Control' feature that lets you dig deeper into the film and production process without interrupting the film.

Oh, keep an eye out for a clever tribute to the late Bill Bixby and for the comic book aficionados, check out one of the deleted scenes for a star-spangled tip of the hat to a certain Marvel hero expected to hit the big screen soon. You can check out scenes from the movie here!

Ferrell hits Broadway
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 10/20/08 at 10:17 AM | Comments (0)

ferrellasbush.jpgWill Ferrell will make his Broadway debut in January in a new one-man comedy called “You.”

Re-Welcome America, a final night with George w. Bush, he portrayed Bush, as you may recall, during his, last couple of years on Saturday Night Live. Producing the show is Adam Mc Kay, who wrote and directed Ferrell’s movies “Step Brothers, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.”

I like Ferrell. I’ve met him a few times and remember loving his “Dog Show” bit with Molly Shannon on SNL. But most of his movies are an acquired taste for me. “Elf” is by far his best.

dogshow.jpgThe show begins previews on inauguration day, Jan. 20, and opens for us critics on Feb. 1 at the Cort theatre, and will run only through Mar. 15, coincidentally, the old inauguration day, back when communication was more primitive. Combined with the current movie “W.” it figures to be quite a sendoff for the 43rd president.

A 'W' Takes Weekend Box Office Title
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/19/08 at 09:15 PM | Comments (0)

max payne_467197_b7ffe726.jpgThere was a W leading the way at the box office this weekend, only it was Mark Wahlberg who took top honors. "Max Payne" overcame mostly bad reviews (except from Jeffrey & Alison) to score an $18 million debut haul. Second place went to the dogs again, as "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" took in $11.2M ($69M total) and set its sights on a possible $100 million take. Third place went to "The Secret Life of Bees", the ensemble drama starring Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys. It earned a strong $11M, and had the largest per-screen average in the Top 10 ($6,945).

Oliver Stone's "W." finished in fourth but considering it earned $10.5M and it only cost $25 million to make, studio Lionsgate should be thrilled.

wmovie poster.jpgConsidering how political films usually do weak business, everyone involved is probably very happy with this debut. I'm wondering if the mixed reviews will hurt any chances for an Oscar push for Josh Brolin. He's received high marks from most critics (including Lyons & Bailes) and helped his cause by hosting the highest-rated SNL in 14 years this past weekend.

Fifth place at the box office went to "Eagle Eye" with $7.3M ($81.3M total). Shia LaBeouf is truly MONEY at the movies.

Another debut, Barry Levinson's "What Just Happened", took in $216,000 on just 36 screens. If you're one of the many fans out there wondering what happened to Robert De Niro's career, go see this movie for proof that while his taste in scripts may not be what it used to be, his acting chops are as sharp as ever. Great industry satire.

Oh, "The Dark Knight" is now up to $990 MILLION in worldwide box office. Truly amazing numbers, but you want a $ figure that will really make your jaw drop?

mamma_mia1234.jpg"Mamma Mia!'s" total earnings now stand at an astounding $520 million!! Considering it only cost $52 million, the musical is turning into one of the most profitable movies in years (the studio behind it is Universal, which like RT, is part of NBC Universal).

Finally, 20th Century Fox had a nice 1-3 punch with 'Max' (a 20th release) and 'Bees' (from sister label Fox Searchlight) after a weak summer for the studio. How well the films hold up in upcoming weeks will be interesting to see. "Max Payne" needs to earn at least $50-$60 million to be quote-unquote a successful film (and I imagine they have thoughts of a sequel if it does well enough).

"Bees" could be a Fall surprise given its decent reviews and a diverse cast with mainstream appeal.

New on Blu - 'The Ultimate Matrix'
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/18/08 at 06:47 PM | Comments (0)

matrixbluray.jpeg
We started a new segment on REEL TALK this weekend called ‘New on Blu’, which will focus on the latest titles to be released on Blu-ray. The first title we’ll discuss is “The Ultimate Matrix Collection,” a stupendous 7-disc collection of The Wachowski Brothers’ visionary sci-fi franchise. More on that in a little bit.

As part of this new segment, we’ll mention 1 or 2 recently-released titles on the show and several more here on REELTALKtv.com. DVD-philes already know this but for those who don’t, Sony’s Blu-ray won the High-Definition dvd format war when Toshiba threw in the towel on its HD-DVD competing format.

Since hi-def is the future of dvd, we feel it’s in your best interest to keep you informed on the latest Blu-ray titles and try to help you spend your money wisely. The picture and sound quality is an impressive upgrade from regular DVD, but Blu-rays cost more so an informed decision is important so you upgrade your movie library wisely.

matrix3.jpgNow, about that “Ultimate Matrix” set. “The Matrix Trilogy” has been one of the most requested Blu-ray titles for some time. This is the kind of film series made for home viewing on a grand scale. So Warner Bros. knew they had to get this set right or risk the wrath of millions of Neo-nutty fans. No worries. This is an incredible collection that pops off your plasma or LCD TV and if you have surround sound, will pass off the neighbors.

In terms of the movies themselves, the first one, “The Matrix”, is far and away the best of the series. Groundbreaking in visual style if not in storytelling, it was the film that brought Cyberpunk to the mainstream. The dystopian future, warnings of over-reliance on technology and the philosophical overtones (Neo being “The One”) are all elements found in the best science fiction stories. Combine that with the tremendous set pieces and innovative effects The Wachowskis came up with, and you have a modern masterpiece that still holds up, nearly a decade later.

By comparison, the two sequels, “Matrix Reloaded” and “Matrix Revolutions”, suffer greatly. Granted total control of the franchise due to the incredible success of the first film, The Wachowskis looked like they could have used another voice in the edit room. “Reloaded” and “Revolutions” both featured clunky dialogue and convoluted storylines that were next to impossible to comprehend.

TheMatrixReloaded_4.jpgThey also seemed to rely too much on the high-octane martial arts fight scenes that wowed audiences the first time. That’s not entirely the fault of the brothers. “The Matrix” was so influential, other filmmakers copied their techniques, especially the bullet-time trick. So what was revolutionary had become just…routine.

“Reloaded” was a huge box-office hit ($738 million worldwide) but word-of-mouth was so bad that “Revolutions” had a rather disappointing run, if you can call $424 million disappointing.

So how do these films hold up on Blu-ray? The original I think fares the best. Since its debut in 1999, there have been tremendous advancements in movie technology.
This set presents each film in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 widescreen (16:9 enhanced). The 1080p transfer is absolutely tremendous, but especially for the original movie. Given a complete visual overhaul, “The Matrix” looks as if it was shot yesterday. No graininess at all, sharp colors…its really crystal clear. The close-up shots of the actors show tremendous detail. The cinematography from each film is truly impressive, which you can tell even in the dark scenes. Usually these scenes don’t look as sharp. Not in this set.

matrixrevimage581611x.jpgAnd don’t adjust your TV, it’s supposed to look green!! On my LCD flat-screen, I was caught off guard by the green tint prevalent in the first daytime shot (when Keanu Reeves is at his office job). Then I remembered that the Wachowskis intentionally did this to differentiate the scenes that take place within the Matrix. The print transfer here is so sharp, its actually distracting in a few spots, but my eyes easily adjusted to the visual hint. Other reviewers with more technical expertise than I have noticed a few problems with the layer changes between chapter 20 and 21 about an hour into the first film and during chapter 17 one hour into “Reloaded”, but it was nothing that I noticed.

The ‘bullet-time’ effect – when Neo (that’s Keanu Reeves if you haven’t seen the movies) dodges gunfire from the agents of the Matrix – is just as impressive on Blu-ray as it was the first time we saw it in theaters. You can see every ‘pop’ in the air from each bullet. The pristine transfer also lets you notice the seamless editing of each movie.

So we’ve established that the visual component of the set is A+. What about the sound? No worries, you can hear the proverbial pin drop in each movie, thanks the Dolby True HD sound.

the-matrix-reloaded-12-800.jpgAdditionally, each movie comes with a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel soundtrack and two Dolby Digital 2.0 channel soundtracks. Again, if you don’t have surround sound, it’s tough to appreciate the audio impact of these films. But if you do, then prepare to be walloped. Not just by the pulsating soundtrack but with the sound FX accompanying each fight scene or major set piece (like the exploding building in the first one). I’m a stickler for audio/visual synchronization and I’m happy to report this set has no such problems (none that I noticed, anyway). Btw, in the first movie, the standout scene to enjoy the tech qualities of this set is the scene where Neo and Trinity go to free Morpheus.

As for the extras, well, on a seven-disc set with a hefty price tag, you can expect lots of extras, and you get them here.

If you had the HD-DVD set, you’ll recognize most of the features here. You not only get ‘Critics Commentaries’ but also ‘Philosophers Commentaries’ discussing the headier aspects of the Matrix for each film. There are also trailers for each film, a written intro by The Wachowskis, a documentary called “The Matrix Revisited” which isn’t new unless you didn’t own the previous Matrix DVD version. It is a fascinating look at the Matrix phenomenon that diehard fans will drool over. My favorite extra: The first hi-def presentation of “Animatrix”, the multi-part anime series telling a variety of related stories. I geeked out on that big-time. Unlike many other extras, which are not presented in Hi-def, “Animatrix” really benefits from getting the premium presentation. If you like the Matrix and anime in general, you’ll get a kick out of this.

Having just received the set this week (and since I’m married, my free time is limited), I’m still poring through the extras. But if you are A) single, separated or if you happen to be that rare married guy who actually gets to do what he wants, or B) somehow have 35 hours of free time, then you can delve head-first to watch every other extra in this collection. New Trailer for 'Dear Zachary'
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 10/17/08 at 09:18 AM | Comments (0)

dearzachary.jpgHere's the trailer for an indie documentary called "Dear Zachary", which debuts in NY Oct. 31st before expanding nationally.

It tells the story of a young boy caught in custody battle between his mother and the boy's grandparents. You see, the child's father, Dr. Andrew Bagby was murdered in 2001 and the prime suspect was his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Shirley Turner. She was pregnant at the time with Andrew's child, who she would name Zachary at the time of his birth.

Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne was a friend of Bagby's and decided to make this movie to help Zachary know a little bit about his dad. The film's focus changed after Bagby's parents -- Zachary's grandparents -- decided to fight for custody of their child's son.

Oscar Race Shakeup
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/16/08 at 10:46 PM | Comments (0)

the-road-first-image.jpgThe race for the Academy Awards has a crowded field this year, with roughly two dozen films vying for nominations and maybe, just maybe, a golden dude. But two possible contenders have apparently dropped out before the contest has really begun. Entertainment Weekly editor-at-large (and friend of Reel Talk) Dave Karger reports in his Oscar Watch blog that "The Road" and "The Soloist" have been bumped until 2009.

Reasons for the moves are still unclear, but "The Road", which stars Viggo Mortensen and is based on the Cormac Mcarthy novel, apparently was shifted by The Weinstein Company because Weinstein wants to focus its Oscar campaigning on "The Reader" (a film with behind-the-scenes drama of its own, as producer Scott Rudin reportedly took his name off the film after disagreements with studio chief Harvey Weinstein).

The reasons for moving "The Soloist" may have to do with a simple numbers crunch.

Basically, Paramount Pictures decided it had too many films being released this year and as part of a new company strategy to release just 20 movies per year, chose the Robert Downey Jr./Jamie Foxx drama to be bumped to March of '09.

the-soloist_l.jpgStudio sources insist the move was strictly about corporate economics, saying a smaller slate of movies will greatly reduce marketing costs, and had nothing to do with the quality of the movie.

Of course, Downey Jr. shouldn't be too bummed. Paramount is apparently readying a big Oscar push for his hilarious supporting turn in "Tropic Thunder."

He-Man Movie Kaput?
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/16/08 at 10:27 PM | Comments (0)

he-man-dvd.jpg
Plans for an updated live-action film based on that classic 80s 'Toon "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" have been put on hold -- and the project may be dead.

According to Latino Review, the studio apparently wasn't high on Justin Marks' script for the film, tentatively called "Grayskull." So, they put it in turnaround, which is Hollywood-ese for burying it under a pile of other scripts.

Too bad. Some fan sites say Marks' script had real potential. You wonder with the success of other 80s properties like "Transformers" why Warners wouldn't be excited about the movie.

The only person more disappointed than the millions of He-Man fans out there by this news is Frank Langella. I'm sure he was hoping the movie would be made, so people could finally forget about his terrible turn as Skeletor in 1987's "Masters of the Universe."

Sneak Peek: The Mark Wahlberg Interview
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/15/08 at 03:31 PM | Comments (0)

mark_wahlberg_10.jpgAfter making two consecutive quote-unquote 'serious' movies - "The Happening" and "The Lovely Bones" -- Mark Wahlberg was thrilled to be able to go back to kicking onscreen butt in "Max Payne." Wahlberg plays the title character, a grim cop out for vengeance. With a resume that includes challenging productions like "The Italian Job", "Shooter" and "Planet of the Apes", you would think those films provided the toughest moments of Wahlberg's career. But when Jeffrey asked him what's been his toughest on-set moment, Wahlberg gave a surprising answer. Check it out and catch more of Jeffrey's interview with Mark Wahlberg on this weekend's RT.

HOWARD OUT, CHEADLE IN FOR 'IRON MAN 2'
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/15/08 at 02:57 PM | Comments (0)

howard_cheadle.jpgIn a surprise move, Terrence Howard is out of "Iron Man 2" and is being replaced by Don Cheadle. News of the casting switch comes as pre-production on the sequel to this summer's monster comic book hit gets underway.

For Cheadle, this is great news. Outside of the "Ocean's" movies, he's best known for well-respected but little-seen films such as "Talk to Me" and "Hotel Rwanda," for which he was Oscar nominated. A chance to step in to a high-profile property like "Iron Man" is an ideal way to up your commercial prospects (prestige doesn't really pay the bills, you know). His timing couldn't have been better.

Jim Rhodes, AKA 'Rhodey', is Tony Stark's best friend and military liaison in the Iron Man mythos. Many expect director Jon Favreau to give Rhodey a larger part in the franchise's continuation. In fact, he could don the War Machine armor in either the second or third 'Iron Man' film, something that was hinted at in the first picture.

So why isn't Howard going to do it? What else? MONEY.

iron-man-site-james-rhodes.jpgWhat were Howard and his advisors thinking?? Indications are that Howard's team simply demanded more cash than Marvel Studios wanted to pay. Look, I'm all for anyone getting maximum value, but to get the boot from a film series like "Iron Man" right before your character steps into the spotlight makes no sense to me. Could the offer they gave him be that low? Certainly a possibility. Marvel reportedly tried to get Favreau back for the sequel on the cheap, only to come to their senses and renegotiate.

If you're Marvel, why overpay a supporting actor -- even one as gifted as Terrence Howard -- when you have an able replacement like Don Cheadle waiting in the wings?

Talk about life imitating art. Remember the "Entourage" storyline where Vince gets replaced in "Aquaman 2" by Jake Gyllenhaal?? Poor Vince still hasn't recovered from that debacle.

iron_man_movie_image_robert_downey_jr12.jpgThe risk for "Iron Man" is that fans of the first movie may be upset by the sudden casting change, but in the past, franchises like 'Batman' and 'Jack Ryan' have survived and even thrived after replacing the lead actor not once but twice. So having a new guy as Robert Downey Jr.'s buddy probably won't hurt ticket sales when the sequel arrives in theaters in 2010.

However, if I were Terrence Howard's agent, I'd make sure to have some solid prospects lined up for my client ASAP. Bad career decisions like this can take years to recover from, and sometimes even that's not long enough.

Just ask Alec Baldwin how his film career went after he bailed on Jack Ryan following "The Hunt for Red October." Or just watch "Entourage," where poor Vincent Chase is down-and-out he can't even get a 'Benji' movie.

BROLIN GOES WEST FOR NEXT ROLE

Brolin.jpgToby Keith must have been thinking about Josh Brolin when he wrote his song "I Should Have Been A Cowboy." After playing a Texan in the White House -- some say George W. Bush brought a gunslinger's mentality to the Oval Office -- in "W.", and having just done the Texas-based "No Country for Old Men", Brolin is now in talks to star in the adaptation of DC Comics' 1970s Western comic "Jonah Hex."

While there are a few i's to be dotted and t's to be crossed, Brolin sounds excited about portraying the scarred gunfighter. He talks to Jeffrey about it here...

Rating "Max Payne"
Posted by Alison Bailes on 10/14/08 at 03:09 PM | Comments (0)

max-payne-mark-wahlberg-1.jpgI'm not sure if I'm just becoming more conservative in my views on violence or whether it's because I now have children... but I never cease to be amazed at what passes for a PG-13 rating these days.

Last night I saw "Max Payne," a neo-noir revenge thriller starring Mark Wahlberg (who will be visiting our studio on Wednesday, check back to watch the interview.)

And even though the on-screen gore was kept to a minimum, the intimation of violence was huge. Every conflict is solved with a gunshot, and some nasty stuff with a machete happens off-screen but is audibly suggestive and gruesome.

What are we teaching our teenagers? That it's OK to settle one's battles with a round of semi-automatic gunfire? "Max Payne" should be rated R........no doubt about it!

We're Watching the Watchmen!
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/ 8/08 at 10:28 AM | Comments (0)

watchmen20ad_giant.jpgTo say "Watchmen" is a much-anticipated film would be a drastic understatement. The legion of fans who have have memorized Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' landmark comic book series have been speculating about a 'Watchmen' film since the prehistoric days. You know, before the Internet.

The wait will soon be over.

The film, due out March 6, 2009 (provided Warner Bros. and Fox work out their legal difficulties) is almost finished. At a special presentation in New York Monday night, director Zack Snyder screened 30 minutes of footage for a small group of press.

These types of presentations are usually a sign of confidence from the studio and the filmmaker that they have a winner on their hands. But the potential risk is substantial. Showing parts of a film out of order could backfire, especially with a film as closely scrutinized as "Watchmen." Choose the wrong scenes and you could have a Fanboy revolt that could crack the Internet in half.

Judging by what i saw at the Time Warner screening room, Warners and Snyder have nothing to worry about. "Watchmen." looks AMAZING.

comedian.jpgThey showed four sequences, each one illustrating key chapters in the original series. The first was the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the incident that kicks off the plot that drives the main story of "Watchmen": Is someone targeting America's superheroes? It's a violent, ugly fight scene played out to Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" and the contrast between the violent visuals and the elegance of Cole's voice make for an unsettling scene.

Then they screened perhaps the most important part of the movie, the opening credits. I know, you're thinking I'm nuts. 'How can the opening credits be that important?'

The answer is, because it drops you right into the world of "Watchmen." You get a sense of the dark, disillusioned world it takes place in.

One of the trickiest parts of adapting the original series was how to capture the mood of the book. It's set during an alternate reality 1985, with the Cold War still going on. With a 12-issue comic series ('Watchmen' was originally published in this fashion back in 1986. Since then, it's been reprinted exclusively in trade paperback, or Graphic Novel, form) you have the flexibility and the arena to establish the atmosphere, the universe in which the story is told. Moore and Gibbons did it masterfully over each issue.

watchmen3panel.jpgA feature-film doesn't have the luxury of that much time. When you're dealing with subject matter that includes grown men running around dark streets in costumes and capes, you run the risk of losing your audience if you don't immediately establish the right tone. Snyder uses the opening credits to introduce you to the world in which these characters live in. If you've never read 'Watchmen', this sequence is the visual aid to help catch you up.

Frankly, I was amazed by some of the images Snyder included. We see a same-sex spin on the famous 'War is Over' picture showing two people kissing in Times Square, followed by a succession of newspaper headlines. Historical figures such as President Nixon (a key figure in the story) and JFK also appear. I heard a gasp in the audience during the recreation of Dealey Plaza the day Kennedy was assassinated. We also see the identity of the second shooter. Images of 'flower power' 60s protesters being gunned down were mixed with the introduction of the man who would change the course of human history in this strange universe, America's Superman, Jon Osterman, AKA 'Dr. Manhattan.'

Watchmensmiley.jpgAll this to the soundtrack of Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changin''. A simply perfect song to capture the transformation of society from the Age of Heroes to the suspicion and disenchantment that permeates the present day in the film.

Other scenes we saw include the sequence where we learn how Dr. Osterman (Billy Crudup) became Dr. Manhattan, who happens to be the only super-powered character in "Watchmen." We also see the prison break scene where Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson) and Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) free the homicidal and defiant Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley).

If you haven't read 'Watchmen', I don't want to bore you with detailed breakdowns of the footage. You can read about that here.

I can tell you that if you're not familiar with the story, Snyder appears to have gone to great lengths to make it very newbie-friendly, so you wouldn't have to read the graphic novel six times to follow the movie. Now, would it help to read it first? Just as with any movie adapted from a book, knowing the source material can only help your understanding of the film and the filmmaker's intention.

Afterward, Snyder and 'Watchmen' co-creator Dave Gibbons did a little Q&A. Among the interesting topics discussed:

snyder300.jpgSnyder said he has the film down to a 2 hour, 42 minute cut that he's very satisfied with. Considering the film's current R rating, Snyder acknowledged the studio may lean on him to trim some more.

He also mentioned how his newfound clout earned from "300's" massive success helped him get to make "Watchmen" the way he wanted, which was, to stick faithfully to the original story. He says before he signed on, the studio was ready to greenlight a David Hayter script to be directed by Peter Greengrass that placed the story in the present day and replaced the Cold War with the war on terror. Snyder rolled his eyes while saying this and said, "yeah, that's what people want to see."

Snyder says Alan Moore's name was left off the credits to respect Moore's wishes. The co-creator of "Watchmen" and "V for Vendetta," Moore is famously anti-Hollywood and has repeatedly stated that he does not want his name associated with any studio adaptation of one of his stories.

Oh, and in response to which actors he thought would have been good choices to be in the film, Gibbons said that awhile back, he thought Burt Reynolds would have made a great choice to play The Comedian.

watchmen7hv.jpgLet's face it, Warner Bros. wouldn't have screened anything if it didn't think it had another hit on its hands. This is exactly how they started the hype machine on "300" two years ago. Screen a chunk of carefully-culled footage six months ahead of release, let the selected media pick their collective jaws off the floor and spread the word, and watch the buzz build. Back then, it led to a $70 million + debut for "300."

Will "Watchmen" follow the Spartans to box-office glory? We'll find out in six months.

sarah-jessica-parker-deck-the-halls-los-angeles-premiere-qDuQfP.jpgSarah Jessica Parker, is coming back to HBO! However, the Manolo's are not included this time... "Washingtoniennes" is Parker's new TV pilot and has cast the three female roles.

Kevin Bacon is executive producing a prospective new series for HBO's main competition, Showtime, called "The Booths." The series centers on the dysfunctional relationship withJohn Wilkes Booth and his brother Edwin, Junius Brutus Jr. prior to Booth assassinating President Abraham Lincoln.

After "Get Smart" grossed $230 million worldwide, Warner Bros. is making the "Smart" move by signing Carell to reprise his role as Maxwell Smart.

Movie_alice_in_wonderland_flowers.pngAfter getting great press for her performance in "Rachel Getting Married," Anne Hathaway has now signed up for "Alice in Wonderland" from director Tim Burton. Johnny Depp is also on board to play the Mad Hatter, his latest collaboration with Burton.

Speaking of Depp, he's about to become the highest paid actor in Hollywood! According to Slashfilm.com, his salary for "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" will make Depp the new Top Dollar Dog in Tinseltown, beating out Tom Hanks ("Angels and Demons") AND Keanu Reeves ("The Matrix") Will there be enough money to bring back the other stars of the film - Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom? Hmm.

"Lethal Weapon 5" could be inching from rumor to actual development stage. The latest reports suggest Mel Gibson's approval was the last remaining hurdle to get the film on the fast track. No word yet on whether Mel has given his OK. isla_fisher300.jpg
"Wedding Crasher" Isla Fisher is starring in the new film "Confessions of a Shopaholic" coming out in February 2009. Check out the trailer here!

Kevin Smith's "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" or stick figures? Seems like Kevin Smith forgot to include Seth Rogen on the movie poster! Buses have been spotted holding advertisements for Smith's new film which do not include Seth Rogen, but instead a stick figure drawing of him! So why would Smith not want to include his A-list star? Is he worried people will confuse this film with Rogen's classic, "Knocked Up?" Hmm...

Kat Dennings from "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist", which had a $12.3 million debut this past weekend, might be signing on to work with Woody Harrelson. Entitled "Defendor" Harrelson will star as a regular guy who believes he has superhero powers. Dennings will play the teenager whom Harrelson befriends.

Football Season here we go!
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 10/ 6/08 at 02:51 PM | Comments (0)

ernie davis1.jpgWith baseball winding down (perish the thought) football has been a frequent subject for Hollywood over the years. Indeed, this week "The Express" opens, telling the story of Ernie Davis, Syracuse's great #44. He was the first African-American to win the coveted Heisman Trophy. I saw him play when I was a teenager and remember him as the Gayle Sayers/Walter Payton of his time.

He died of leukemia in training camp with the Cleveland Browns, in the summer just before the 1963 season. Joining his predecessor at Syracuse, the immortal Jim Brown, in the Cleveland backfield was not to be.

My favorite movie about football is "North Dallas Forty" starring Nick Nolte, about the Dallas Cowboys and how a veteran running back tries desperately to prolong his career. It showed the underside of the game with pills, questionable tactics and players hiding injuries were prevalent back then.

Knute_Rockne_All_American.jpgOther movies include, of course, "Knute Rockne, All American" with Pat O'Brien as the great coach of the so-called "Fighting Irish” and Ronald Reagan as George Gipp, "The Gipper", Notre Dame's most famous player, who died young, but not before telling his coach someday to "win one for 'The Gipper.’”

Others on my list include John Wayne as a veteran coach with a precocious daughter in "Trouble Along the Way", and "Jim Thorpe-All American." Burt Lancaster played the Sac and Fox Native American who became the greatest athlete of the first half of the XX century. Its recreation of old-time football, in the age when the field was actually divided into a grid (hence "gridiron'), looks authentic. George Clooney in "Leatherheads" last year was ignored at the box office, but it’s a funny movie about the Stone Age of pro football. And there were some nice shots of that long ago era as well in John Ford's "The Long Grey Line", about Marty Maher, who spent 50 years as an athletic assistant at West Point.

A young Dwight Eisenhower played by Ford favorite Harry Cary, Jr. appears as the football star of that era. Harold Lloyd's "The Freshman" in 1925 and the Marx Brothers' "Horse Feathers" in 1932 had football sequences in their comedies; that really WAS the Stone Age of football!

jackie_robinson.jpg"The Jackie Robinson Story", with Robinson incredibly playing himself, has archive footage of his UCLA days as an All-American before he found baseball immortality. And there are some fine football sequences in "Crazylegs.” It was made three years later, in 1953, has Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch who was the old Los Angeles Rams' receiver portraying himself. There are about 50 more including "Gus” from 1976 about a mule that kicked field goals. As a onetime college kicker, I draw the line there!

Tyler Perry in Union Dispute with WGA
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/ 5/08 at 11:18 PM | Comments (0)

tylerperry.jpgTyler Perry's incredible rise from homeless playwright to immense fame and fortune is one of the great Hollywood success stories. A true self-made mogul, he financed his first film "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" (with Lionsgate's help) and scored a surprise hit that has since led to his production company, The Tyler Perry Company, becoming one of the biggest independent production companies in the world.

This weekend saw the groundbreaking on the company's new facilities in Atlanta, with stars like Oprah, Mary J. Blige and Will Smith attending the big party. What you may not have seen (since most news outlets didn't cover it) were the protesters picketing outside. It could be the first major blemish on Perry's rapid rise to the top of the industry food chain.

You see, the Writers Guild of America is accusing Perry of firing four writers from his popular cable tv show "House of Payne" because they tried to unionize. The WGA has even filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board. You can read more about it here.

Radcliffe Casts Spell on Broadway

radcliffe.jpgIf you live in the New York area or are planning a visit in the next few months, do yourself a favor and check out the latest version of "Equus." I saw it Friday night and left the theater convinced that Daniel Radcliffe's career will be just fine post-Harry Potter.

This is not a show for the timid. It's disturbing and unsettling at times, and I'm not even talking about the scene where young Daniel drops trousers onstage. That's tastefully done. But I'm sure many younger Harry Potter fans who attend the show without knowing much about the show will be caught off-guard by a scene where Radcliffe has an orgasmic gallop on horseback.

As the troubled young man Alan, Radcliffe is brimming with anger, rage and sexual confusion. He works very well with Richard Griffiths, who plays the psychiatrist trying to get to the root of Alan's problems.

That they work so well together shouldn't come as a surprise, since the two not only appeared in the London version of the show but also in the Potter movies.

Powerful enough during many scenes to make you squirm in your seat, "Equus" is one of those plays where actors can earn their stripes as 'serious' thespians. Radcliffe's got his now.

I can't wait to see what he does next. After he wraps up the Potter franchise, of course. After all, you have to pay the bills.

Greg Kinnear Tackles 'Weighty' Role
Posted by Michael Avila on 10/ 3/08 at 11:26 AM | Comments (0)

Greg Kinnear portrays Bob Kearns in "Flash of Genius," which opens this weekend. If you don't know who Kearns is, you're not alone. Most people don't. But he created something that is as much a part of our society as the remote control: the intermittent windshield wiper. His powerful (and very true) story are told in Kinnear's latest film, for which Kinnear had to pack on the pounds. Listen to him telling Jeffrey about it here.

Movie Review: "How To Lose Friends and Alienate People"
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 10/ 2/08 at 06:10 PM | Comments (0)

losefriendsposter2.jpgDuring the busy fall movie season, the studios are inundating theaters with new films. With each weekend seeing about eight new releases, it's nearly impossible for us to squeeze in every review on a single episode of reel talk, due to time constraints, scheduling conflicts and other issues. So we'll try to pick up the slack by keeping you up to date on new films here on our website.

Simon Pegg has made his name here a few years ago with "Shaun of The Dead" and “Hot Fuzz.” Now the British actor, coming soon in the new star trek movie as “Scotty” stars in “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People,” which opens this weekend.

simon-pegg.jpgBased on a best-selling book, he plays a journalist hired by a powerful New York magazine publisher. He nearly gets fired for some shenanigans, but is soon attracted to a desk mate, played by Kirsten Dunst. I’ve never been a fan of hers, finding her screen charisma invisible, but to her credit she does evoke a wholesome aura here. Pegg 's character shows creativity and moves up the ladder at the magazine, eventually showing up at an Oscar-like ceremony on the arm of the magazine’s cover girl, who’s a best actress nominee.

Pegg’s performance is much funnier than the script, and I wonder what the late Dudley Moore would’ve done with the part. Pegg is good enough to deliver some yuks as a fish out of water in New York who grows up and learns who he really is. “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People” is funny, but it should’ve been hilarious.

Alison and I will compare notes on this film on next week's reel talk.

More Thoughts on "Miracle at St. Anna"
Posted by Alison Bailes on 10/ 1/08 at 04:32 PM | Comments (0)

MIRACLE.jpgTime constraints on our show prevented me from communicating all my thoughts on Spike Lee’s World War II drama. And sometimes when a film is neither a masterpiece nor a complete turkey, it’s hard to give the audience a clear picture of a film’s value.

Lee’s film is definitely no masterpiece although some other critics clearly disagree with me. Sometimes I think just a worthy subject matter, (and how more worthy can you get than WWII heroes?) clouds people’s judgments.

Lee starts his picture with unconvincing scenes set in 1983 New York…although you might think it’s the 1940s given the sets and strangely dated dialogue. The action shifts to Italy where there is a scene with John Leguizamo that serves absolutely no purpose other than to have an excuse for a half naked lady to writhe around for a few minutes.

full_63040.jpgOnce back in 1944, Lee’s depiction of war also rings hollow. A white army captain seems caricaturist, as does a German S.S. officer. The four stars seem to struggle with slightly wooden dialogue and an urgent, intrusive score spoils what might have been some tense battle scenes. We are treated to a half naked woman twice…again for no other reason than perhaps to titillate? This wrenched me from the drama at hand and it was totally gratuitous.

However, once the story settles in to the Italian village and a mystery of betrayal and partisanship emerges I found “Miracle at St. Anna” to be engaging and well acted. I feel like I watched some strange hybrid of two quite separate films.
