I feel like I’m perhaps the only person who feels this way…but my enjoyment of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” was marred by the experience of suffering through it in IMAX. I loved Heath Ledger. In fact all the acting was impressive. And some of the optical effects were superb. But I had a difficult time following some of the action sequences.
I don’t know whether it was Nolan’s direction or the fact that sitting in an IMAX theater makes it almost impossible to take in the screen as a whole.
I equate it to looking at a piece of great art in a museum. You wouldn’t stand with your nose pressed up against the Mona Lisa or La Guernica. Being too close makes it impossible to appreciate the bigger picture. I felt like some of the scenes should have been enjoyed at a distance to understand all the dynamics and gain perspective on the action. Watching “The Dark Knight” in IMAX was an eye-ache inducing two and a half hours. I’d like to see it again in 35mm to better enjoy Nolan’s direction.
