Looks like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton may be working together for the seventh time. Ain't It Cool is reporting Depp could be playing the Mad Hatter in Burton's adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland." As the late, lamented Ed Wood would say -- "That's perfect!"
According to ‘The Hollywood Reporter,’ ‘Splinterheads’ is set to begin production next month. The carnival themed comedy stars Rachel Taylor as a carnie con artist. She is best known for her role as the computer wiz in ‘Transformers.’ Her counterpart is a slacker played by Thomas Middleditch. Co-stars include Lea Thompson and Christopher McDonald.
Not really a casting notice as much as a 'green light', but Variety is reporting a biopic on the influential all-girl rock band "The Runaways" is on the way. No actresses are attached to the film yet, but Floria Sigismondi is signed on to write and direct. River Road Entertainment will finance the film, about the popular all-female 70s group that launched the careers of Joan Jett and Lita Ford.
Continuing Hollywood's 'Everything 80s' mood lately, MGM is resurrecting the Robocop franchise. Ordinarily, this wouldn't really float my boat. Aside from the deliriously subversive first "Robocop" film I never cared much for this property. But the fact that Darren Aronofsky is apparently directing it has me thinking this could be somethin' good.

Talking about living the dream. Imagine being a Star Wars nut as a kid, then growing up to be a filmmaker. Someone with such skill in the animation world (doing work like "Avatar: The Last Airbender") that George Lucas himself, the Grand Poobah of the Star Wars galaxy, would handpick you to direct the first-ever animated Star Wars feature film, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which opens August 15th.
Dave Filoni, this is your life!
We caught up with the director of "The Clone Wars" at Comic Con (he's also supervising the ongoing animated series that will follow the theatrical release). If you poll most hardcore SW fans - you know, obsessive guys like myself -- I think you'll find the Clone Wars is perhaps the most interesting era in the Star Wars mythos. I'm really glad Lucas chose this period to focus the animated film (and the subsequent series) on.

Comic Con seems to be the never ending discussion and coverage this week... so to give you a little bit of a break here's some cool news and interesting articles on everything other than Comic Con!
Apparently tired of the string of consecutive flops she's starred in recently, Jennifer Lopez is going back to her roots. No, she's not hopping back on the 6 train. She's doing another romantic comedy called "The Governess", according to Variety.
If you're wondering why it took 19 years to get a new Indiana Jones movie, read this interview George Lucas gave The Times Online. It should help make it clear.
Cinematical has this very funny, but true top 7 'Stupid Things Last Men on Earth Do'... check it out here.
Also, do you know who the smartest movie/TV characters are? Entertainment Weekly has a full slide show on their top 24 people check it out here.
Looks like, Quentin Tarantino has found a home for his World War II drama, "Inglorious Bastards." According to Variety magazine, Universal Pictures has okayed the production and Tarantino is reportedly talking to Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio about playing two of the main roles.

One can only imagine how Dave Gibbons feels about the upcoming "Watchmen" movie. The co-creator of the classic comic book series has seen production start and stop several times over the past 20 years. But according to Gibbons, Zack Snyder appears to have figured out what Terry Gilliam, Paul Greengrass and Darren Aronofsky couldn't: How to successfully bring the dystopian superhero tale to theaters.
Being a huge comic geek, I can't tell you how cool it was to be able to talk with the legendary artist for awhile. I also asked him what he thinks about his partner Alan Moore's decision to disavow himself from the "Watchmen." Moore's a longtime Hollywood hater and has said he won't see ANY movie based on his work. Gibbons addresses that at the end of our interview.

Talk about a leap of faith. Billy Crudup's best known for roles in character-driven pictures like "Inventing the Abbotts", "Big Fish" and of course, "Almost Famous."
Now, the former 'Golden God' is playing a big blue guy named Dr. Manhattan in "Watchmen" who has almost omnipotent power. Crudup talked with us about how his kid brother helped him decide to join the cast. Oh, and watch how he deftly avoids when I tried to get him to do a line from his other 'well-known' role. It's...priceless.

If you watch "Grey's Anatomy" (and judging by the ratings, practically EVERYONE does) then you probably know Jeffrey Dean Morgan as 'Denny', the guy who gave his heart to Izzie -- right before he croaked.
Morgan's playing 'The Comedian' in "Watchmen," a twisted, sadistic character who couldn't be more different from the nice guy he's played in "P.S. I Love You" and the upcoming "The Accidental Husband."
We talked about that with him at Comic Con. Morgan also admitted he's been reading all the Web chatter about the film.

The cast of "Watchmen" were the center of attention at this weekend's Comic Con in San Diego. Fanboys were beside themselves at the panel, aching for more footage on what's quickly becoming the must-see movie of 2009. We have interviews with just about the entire cast here on REELTALKtv.com. And while they all seemed to thrilled to be a part of Zack Snyder's production, no one was more sincere in wanting the fans to be happy than Malin Akerman.
Best known for roles in comedies like "27 Dresses" and "The Heartbreak Kid" with Ben Stiller, Akerman plays Silk Spectre II in "Watchmen." During the panel, she told the 6,500 fans in Hall H how she put everything she had into the role, "and I hope I don't let you guys down."
With an attitude like that, how can you not be a fan?

Of all the memorable characters in the classic comic series "Watchmen," Rorschach may be the most popular. Rorschach sees all things in black or white, with no room for compromise. Jackie Earle Haley earned an Oscar nomination for his work in "Little Children" alongside fellow "Watchmen" star Patrick Wilson. Haley talked to us about how he got inside the head of the hooded, haunted vigilante for the eagerly anticipated movie, which is due out March 6, 2009.

We caught up with Patrick Wilson at Comic Con this past weekend. The star of "Little Children" and "Purple Violets" was promoting his highest-profile role yet, playing Nite Owl in the comic book adaptation of "Watchmen." Wilson talked about packing on the pounds to play the retired hero and why he liked the character so much.

I'm sitting bleary-eyed at the San Diego airport waiting for my flight back to NYC. Today's the last day for Comic Con '08, but after 3 days of nonstop panels, presentations, press and parties, it's usually a day for bargain-hunting for geeky goodies on the convention floor. So I wanted to hand out Reel Talk's inaugural Favreau Award, which goes to the film that makes the best impression at the Comic Con.
Some of you may not know this, but before "Iron Man" became a $300 million blockbuster, it was a movie that had a lot of question marks. Not one of Marvel's more mainstream characters, there were worries about the film's commercial potential, and even how Robert Downey Jr. would do in the role. Then director Jon Favreau showed up with what became the defining moment of Comic Con '07 - the first trailer for IM. The fans were blown away and anticipation for the movie jumped to DefCon 5.
That kind of buzz-building moment is why Hollywood worships Comic Con now. So did anyone this year make that kind of impact? Read on after the jump.
Hugh Jackman showed up unannounced to screen footage from next year's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and fans went berserk. The presentation on Day 1 not only answered some questions surrounding the film, it left the legion of X-Men fans salivating as they walked out of Hall H.
The rumored appearance by Christian Bale at Saturday's "Terminator Salvation" panel didn't happen (and with all that's going on with him, that's not very surprising). However, the McG-directed fourth chapter of the venerable franchise also proved reassuring to fans at its panel that the film would be the future-set, man vs. machine battlefield movie Terminator fans have always wanted to see, while honoring the legacy of the two classic James Cameron films (while pretty much ignoring T3).
"The Day The Earth Stood Still", the Keanu Reeves/Jennifer Connolly remake of the 1951 classic, was a pleasant surprise, with its dark tone and some impressive special effects.
"Max Payne" seemed to be a crowd pleaser but no one was talking about it afterward.
"The Spirit" had a strong audience response but talking to people after the panel, there were still many doubts about the quality of Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's classic strip.
Acvtually, the winner of the first Favreau Award was a no-brainer: "Watchmen," Zack Snyder's eagerly-awaited adaptation of the landmark comic book series, hit it out of the park with its panel. Besides the extended footage shown to the fans, the cast was in high spirits and seemed to be enjoying their moment in the Fanboy spotlight. Warner Bros. also earned bonus points for including "Watchmen" artist Dave Gibbons on the panel.
The Q&A session even provided some useful nuggets of info and insight. Fans walked out of the convention hall feeling like they had just seen a glimpse at something spectacular, which is just how fans felt last year after "Iron Man." (I know. I was there for both)
A day after the panel, it was still a hot topic of conversation in hotel lobbies and bars in downtown San Diego. And if you're surprised that comic book movies are a popular talking point over drinks, well, remember this is Comic Con we're talking about.
Few comic book productions have as complicated a backstory as "Watchmen", and even less carry the expectations this film has. But after Comic Con, the faithful appear to be convinced they're about to see something special. Mr. Snyder, please tell me where to mail you the award.
Honorable mention goes to Disney's "Tron 2." Yes, you read that right, TRON 2!!!! A sequel to the 1982 animated video game masterpiece is not only in the works, THEY SHOWED ACTUAL FOOTAGE!
I would love to be able to tell you what I thought of the clips but because of Comic Con's insanely packed programming schedule, I couldn't attend the Disney panel (had to attend another presentation). But walking through the Convention floor, Tron talk was everywhere.
I'm off to scour the deep, dark corridors of the WWW for the footage so I can see it. If you consider yourself a Tron fan, I expect you to do the same.

Check out the artwork for the advance poster on the just-announced remake of "Red Sonja." That's Rose McGowan in the starring role made (in)famous by Brigitte Nielsen in the historically bad 1985 film, based on the pulp and comic book heroine.
McGowan and producer/fiance Robert Rodriguez were here at Comic Con to discuss the project. Filming hasnt started yet. Movie is due out in 2010. Check out another poster for "Red Sonja" on the jump page.

Comic Con always yields big surprises for the fans. The first big reveal this year was a biggie - an unannounced appearance by Hugh Jackman to promote next year's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
The Aussie superstar flew in straight from the just-finished production to surprise the fans. He also screened footage from the comic book flick, which revolves around the mysterious origin of (Wolverine), and the fans went nuts! This movie's the early favorite to be the breakout picture at this year's Con.

The floor of the San Diego Convention Center was jam-packed with fanboys & girls browsing the gazillion booths pitching and selling everything from video games to original art to the reason the Con was created for, comic books.
But it's become as much about movies as anything else. Unfortunately, the start of the first big Hollywood panel of the Con - the 20th Century Fox one - has been delayed by more than a half hour due to 'technical difficulties' not explained in much detail by Con workers.
I'm sitting here in Hall H, which is the massive room here where all the big presentations happen (it seats 6,500 people and every seat is taken already). Folks here are waiting for the cast from "The Day The Earth Stood Still" remake and the video game adaptation "Max Payne" to arrive.
Fanboy legend Keanu Reeves is expected, as is Mark Wahlberg. I'll write up the panel once it finally gets underway. The crowd is actually being very patient with the big delay, but I imagine the natives will get restless soon if they don't get some starpower. Don't know about you, but I wouldn't want a room full of plastic light-saber holding people getting angry. You wouldn't like them when they're angry.

Reel Talk has arrived in sunny San Diego for Comic Con.
I always love driving in to downtown from the airport and seeing all the banners promoting the Con all around the city. It's great how the city of San Diego embraces this event, which is truly massive. Check out the pic of the lines just to get in for Preview Night (Wed)!
I'll be updating regularly from the Conv. Floor. As usual w/SDCC expect news to be made regarding upcoming movie projects, so keep checking back here.

"Surfwise" is a slowly paced documentary we reviewed several months back on the show. It's about a quirky 85-year-old California doctor and his family. They live out of a van and traveled up and down California's coastline, surviving, getting close to nature and being home schooled. Some may find this interesting, but I thought the guy was half nuts and the film a sun drenched bore. However, if you disagree with me, it's out DVD now and you can watch some scenes from the film...

In Fanboy nation, no film is being watched with more scrutiny and anticipation than Zack Snyder's take on the celebrated graphic novel "Watchmen." Check out the first trailer for the film, which is due out March 6, 2009. For years, comic fans have wondered how anyone could translate the epic scope of the story to the screen. Well, this first teaser should help ease many of those doubts. And how unrecognizable is Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan?!?! Expect more on the "Watchmen" movie later this week after the film's presentation at the San Diego Comic Con. Keep checking back here for the latest updates, as we'll be out there to pass the word on. Now, enjoy the trailer!

After recieving praise at the Cannes Film Festival, 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' is finally expected to be released on August 15th. By now, anyone who cares about box office figures knows that "The Dark Knight" exceeded even the sky-high preliminary estimates to earn a record-shattering $158.3 million over its first three days (the old record was last year's "Spider-Man 3" with $151 million).
I can't recall a movie earning such a strong combination of stellar reviews (you can check out Jeffrey & Alison's review by clicking here) and tremendous word-of-mouth from audiences. I had friends -- some comics geeks, others people who wouldn't know Two-Face from Clayface -- email me all weekend long raving about the film. I would say "Iron Man's" reign as the year's top grossing film (currently at $314 mil) is in serious jeopardy. TDK is on pace for much higher numbers. That extended time in theaters can only help the possible Oscar campaign for the late Heath Ledger and the film itself.
Lost in the Bat-mania (all the hoopla over TDK really did remind me of the fanfare surrounding 1989's "Batman") was that Hollywood had its busiest non-holiday weekend EVER.
That's largely due to TDK but also because of the surprisingly strong debut of "Mamma Mia!" It posted the best opening numbers of any movie musical in history with $27.6M. Fans of the smash hit Broadway show and ABBA in general obviously wanted a break from the superhero infestation at the multiplex, making Universal's counter-programming gamble pay off bigtime.
Third place was Will Smith's tireless "Hancock" with $14M ($191M total).
In fourth was "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with $11.9M in its sophomore weekend ($43M total), while fifth place went to "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." But Universal's not thrilled that the film dropped 70% in its second frame, earning $10M for a $56.4M total. Doesn't take a genius to figure out most of its intended audience went to see TDK instead but still, that's an enormous drop that could jeopardize chances of a third Hellboy movie.
Next week, Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly return with more silliness in "Step Brothers," while Scully and Mulder return in "The X-Files: I Want To Believe."

In reviewing “Mamma Mia!” on this week’s show, I didn’t have time to mention the sound design, which I found to be extremely distracting in its sterility. Not only were the songs obviously pre-recorded…and the actors lip-synching but all of the dialogue sounded looped. This had the effect of putting the viewer at a remove from the action. So, even though the scenery appeared picture-postcard perfect…I never felt like I was on the Greek island with the characters.

The talk of an Oscar nomination to the late Heath Ledger isn't just hype. His performance ranks right up there with Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs" and Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates in "Psycho." Ledger's costars have been answering questions about him in every interview, rather than hyping their own performances, as well they should.
It will add to the mystique of this movie, sure to be one of the biggest hits of the summer. There have been 6am screenings already sold out--can you imagine seeing ANY movie at that hour?--and tremendous buzz about the Imax version. We have Christian Bale and Sir Michael Caine on our show this week. And Bale will discuss talk of another sequel and his upcoming movies as well. Hope you tune in.
