Casting Call
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/31/08 at 09:43 AM | Comments (1)

depp_burton.jpgLooks like Johnny Depp and Tim Burton may be working together for the seventh time. Ain't It Cool is reporting Depp could be playing the Mad Hatter in Burton's adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland." As the late, lamented Ed Wood would say -- "That's perfect!"

rachael-taylor-picture-1.jpgAccording to ‘The Hollywood Reporter,’ ‘Splinterheads’ is set to begin production next month. The carnival themed comedy stars Rachel Taylor as a carnie con artist. She is best known for her role as the computer wiz in ‘Transformers.’ Her counterpart is a slacker played by Thomas Middleditch. Co-stars include Lea Thompson and Christopher McDonald.

Not really a casting notice as much as a 'green light', but Variety is reporting a biopic on the influential all-girl rock band "The Runaways" is on the way. No actresses are attached to the film yet, but Floria Sigismondi is signed on to write and direct. River Road Entertainment will finance the film, about the popular therunaways.jpgall-female 70s group that launched the careers of Joan Jett and Lita Ford.

Continuing Hollywood's 'Everything 80s' mood lately, MGM is resurrecting the Robocop franchise. Ordinarily, this wouldn't really float my boat. Aside from the deliriously subversive first "Robocop" film I never cared much for this property. But the fact that Darren Aronofsky is apparently directing it has me thinking this could be somethin' good.

comic_con.jpg 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Director Dave Filoni
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/30/08 at 03:28 PM | Comments (0)

daveFiloni.jpgTalking about living the dream. Imagine being a Star Wars nut as a kid, then growing up to be a filmmaker. Someone with such skill in the animation world (doing work like "Avatar: The Last Airbender") that George Lucas himself, the Grand Poobah of the Star Wars galaxy, would handpick you to direct the first-ever animated Star Wars feature film, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," which opens August 15th.

Dave Filoni, this is your life!

We caught up with the director of "The Clone Wars" at Comic Con (he's also supervising the ongoing animated series that will follow the theatrical release). If you poll most hardcore SW fans - you know, obsessive guys like myself -- I think you'll find the Clone Wars is perhaps the most interesting era in the Star Wars mythos. I'm really glad Lucas chose this period to focus the animated film (and the subsequent series) on.

Listen to the director talk about the film right here!

jennifer-lopez1.jpgComic Con seems to be the never ending discussion and coverage this week... so to give you a little bit of a break here's some cool news and interesting articles on everything other than Comic Con!

Apparently tired of the string of consecutive flops she's starred in recently, Jennifer Lopez is going back to her roots. No, she's not hopping back on the 6 train. She's doing another romantic comedy called "The Governess", according to Variety.

If you're wondering why it took 19 years to get a new Indiana Jones movie, read this interview George Lucas gave The Times Online. It should help make it clear.

Cinematical has this very funny, but true top 7 'Stupid Things Last Men on Earth Do'... check it out here.

quentin_tarantino_2.jpgAlso, do you know who the smartest movie/TV characters are? Entertainment Weekly has a full slide show on their top 24 people check it out here.

Looks like, Quentin Tarantino has found a home for his World War II drama, "Inglorious Bastards." According to Variety magazine, Universal Pictures has okayed the production and Tarantino is reportedly talking to Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio about playing two of the main roles.

comic_con.jpg 'Watchmen' Co-Creator Dave Gibbons
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/29/08 at 03:12 PM | Comments (0)

davegibbons.jpgOne can only imagine how Dave Gibbons feels about the upcoming "Watchmen" movie. The co-creator of the classic comic book series has seen production start and stop several times over the past 20 years. But according to Gibbons, Zack Snyder appears to have figured out what Terry Gilliam, Paul Greengrass and Darren Aronofsky couldn't: How to successfully bring the dystopian superhero tale to theaters.
Being a huge comic geek, I can't tell you how cool it was to be able to talk with the legendary artist for awhile. I also asked him what he thinks about his partner Alan Moore's decision to disavow himself from the "Watchmen." Moore's a longtime Hollywood hater and has said he won't see ANY movie based on his work. Gibbons addresses that at the end of our interview.

comic_con.jpg Billy Crudup Opens Up About "Watchmen"
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/29/08 at 03:02 PM | Comments (0)

docmanhattan.JPGTalk about a leap of faith. Billy Crudup's best known for roles in character-driven pictures like "Inventing the Abbotts", "Big Fish" and of course, "Almost Famous."

Now, the former 'Golden God' is playing a big blue guy named Dr. Manhattan in "Watchmen" who has almost omnipotent power. Crudup talked with us about how his kid brother helped him decide to join the cast. Oh, and watch how he deftly avoids when I tried to get him to do a line from his other 'well-known' role. It's...priceless.

comic_con.jpg Jeffrey Dean Morgan: No More Mr. Nice Guy

jeffrey-dean-morgan-295.jpgIf you watch "Grey's Anatomy" (and judging by the ratings, practically EVERYONE does) then you probably know Jeffrey Dean Morgan as 'Denny', the guy who gave his heart to Izzie -- right before he croaked.
Morgan's playing 'The Comedian' in "Watchmen," a twisted, sadistic character who couldn't be more different from the nice guy he's played in "P.S. I Love You" and the upcoming "The Accidental Husband."
We talked about that with him at Comic Con. Morgan also admitted he's been reading all the Web chatter about the film.

silkspectresm.jpgThe cast of "Watchmen" were the center of attention at this weekend's Comic Con in San Diego. Fanboys were beside themselves at the panel, aching for more footage on what's quickly becoming the must-see movie of 2009. We have interviews with just about the entire cast here on REELTALKtv.com. And while they all seemed to thrilled to be a part of Zack Snyder's production, no one was more sincere in wanting the fans to be happy than Malin Akerman.

27Dresses_b.jpgBest known for roles in comedies like "27 Dresses" and "The Heartbreak Kid" with Ben Stiller, Akerman plays Silk Spectre II in "Watchmen." During the panel, she told the 6,500 fans in Hall H how she put everything she had into the role, "and I hope I don't let you guys down."

With an attitude like that, how can you not be a fan?

Here's more with Malin about the movie...

Jackie Earle Haley earned an Oscar nomination for his work in "Little Children" alongside fellow "Watchmen" star Patrick Wilson. Haley talked to us about how he got inside the head of the hooded, haunted vigilante for the eagerly anticipated movie, which is due out March 6, 2009.

comic_con.jpg The Favreau Goes To...
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/27/08 at 01:05 PM | Comments (0)

I'm sitting bleary-eyed at the San Diego airport waiting for my flight back to NYC. Today's the last day for Comic Con '08, but after 3 days of nonstop panels, presentations, press and parties, it's usually a day for bargain-hunting for geeky goodies on the convention floor. So I wanted to hand out Reel Talk's inaugural Favreau Award, which goes to the film that makes the best impression at the Comic Con.

Some of you may not know this, but before "Iron Man" became a $300 million blockbuster, it was a movie that had a lot of question marks. Not one of Marvel's more mainstream characters, there were worries about the film's commercial potential, and even how Robert Downey Jr. would do in the role. Then director Jon Favreau showed up with what became the defining moment of Comic Con '07 - the first trailer for IM. The fans were blown away and anticipation for the movie jumped to DefCon 5.

That kind of buzz-building moment is why Hollywood worships Comic Con now. So did anyone this year make that kind of impact? Read on after the jump.

Hugh Jackman showed up unannounced to screen footage from next year's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and fans went berserk. The presentation on Day 1 not only answered some questions surrounding the film, it left the legion of X-Men fans salivating as they walked out of Hall H.

The rumored appearance by Christian Bale at Saturday's "Terminator Salvation" panel didn't happen (and with all that's going on with him, that's not very surprising). However, the McG-directed fourth chapter of the venerable franchise also proved reassuring to fans at its panel that the film would be the future-set, man vs. machine battlefield movie Terminator fans have always wanted to see, while honoring the legacy of the two classic James Cameron films (while pretty much ignoring T3).

"The Day The Earth Stood Still", the Keanu Reeves/Jennifer Connolly remake of the 1951 classic, was a pleasant surprise, with its dark tone and some impressive special effects.

"Max Payne" seemed to be a crowd pleaser but no one was talking about it afterward.

"The Spirit" had a strong audience response but talking to people after the panel, there were still many doubts about the quality of Frank Miller's adaptation of Will Eisner's classic strip.

Acvtually, the winner of the first Favreau Award was a no-brainer: "Watchmen," Zack Snyder's eagerly-awaited adaptation of the landmark comic book series, hit it out of the park with its panel. Besides the extended footage shown to the fans, the cast was in high spirits and seemed to be enjoying their moment in the Fanboy spotlight. Warner Bros. also earned bonus points for including "Watchmen" artist Dave Gibbons on the panel.

The Q&A session even provided some useful nuggets of info and insight. Fans walked out of the convention hall feeling like they had just seen a glimpse at something spectacular, which is just how fans felt last year after "Iron Man." (I know. I was there for both)

A day after the panel, it was still a hot topic of conversation in hotel lobbies and bars in downtown San Diego. And if you're surprised that comic book movies are a popular talking point over drinks, well, remember this is Comic Con we're talking about.

Few comic book productions have as complicated a backstory as "Watchmen", and even less carry the expectations this film has. But after Comic Con, the faithful appear to be convinced they're about to see something special. Mr. Snyder, please tell me where to mail you the award.

Honorable mention goes to Disney's "Tron 2." Yes, you read that right, TRON 2!!!! A sequel to the 1982 animated video game masterpiece is not only in the works, THEY SHOWED ACTUAL FOOTAGE!

I would love to be able to tell you what I thought of the clips but because of Comic Con's insanely packed programming schedule, I couldn't attend the Disney panel (had to attend another presentation). But walking through the Convention floor, Tron talk was everywhere.

I'm off to scour the deep, dark corridors of the WWW for the footage so I can see it. If you consider yourself a Tron fan, I expect you to do the same.

x-men_hugh_jackman_4.jpgComic Con always yields big surprises for the fans. The first big reveal this year was a biggie - an unannounced appearance by Hugh Jackman to promote next year's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

The Aussie superstar flew in straight from the just-finished production to surprise the fans. He also screened footage from the comic book flick, which revolves around the mysterious origin of (Wolverine), and the fans went nuts! This movie's the early favorite to be the breakout picture at this year's Con.

comic_con.jpg Comic Con Stumbles At Start
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 07/24/08 at 03:11 PM | Comments (0)

comiccon.jpg The floor of the San Diego Convention Center was jam-packed with fanboys & girls browsing the gazillion booths pitching and selling everything from video games to original art to the reason the Con was created for, comic books.

But it's become as much about movies as anything else. Unfortunately, the start of the first big Hollywood panel of the Con - the 20th Century Fox one - has been delayed by more than a half hour due to 'technical difficulties' not explained in much detail by Con workers.

I'm sitting here in Hall H, which is the massive room here where all the big presentations happen (it seats 6,500 people and every seat is taken already). Folks here are waiting for the cast from "The Day The Earth Stood Still" remake and the video game adaptation "Max Payne" to arrive.KeanuReeves.jpg

Fanboy legend Keanu Reeves is expected, as is Mark Wahlberg. I'll write up the panel once it finally gets underway. The crowd is actually being very patient with the big delay, but I imagine the natives will get restless soon if they don't get some starpower. Don't know about you, but I wouldn't want a room full of plastic light-saber holding people getting angry. You wouldn't like them when they're angry.

the con.jpgReel Talk has arrived in sunny San Diego for Comic Con.
I always love driving in to downtown from the airport and seeing all the banners promoting the Con all around the city. It's great how the city of San Diego embraces this event, which is truly massive. Check out the pic of the lines just to get in for Preview Night (Wed)!

I'll be updating regularly from the Conv. Floor. As usual w/SDCC expect news to be made regarding upcoming movie projects, so keep checking back here.

New on DVD: 'Surfwise'
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 07/22/08 at 01:43 PM | Comments (0)

surfwisemovie.jpg"Surfwise" is a slowly paced documentary we reviewed several months back on the show. It's about a quirky 85-year-old California doctor and his family. They live out of a van and traveled up and down California's coastline, surviving, getting close to nature and being home schooled. Some may find this interesting, but I thought the guy was half nuts and the film a sun drenched bore. However, if you disagree with me, it's out DVD now and you can watch some scenes from the film...

Weekend Box Office - What A Knight!
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/21/08 at 03:05 PM | Comments (0)

TDK.jpgBy now, anyone who cares about box office figures knows that "The Dark Knight" exceeded even the sky-high preliminary estimates to earn a record-shattering $158.3 million over its first three days (the old record was last year's "Spider-Man 3" with $151 million).

I can't recall a movie earning such a strong combination of stellar reviews (you can check out Jeffrey & Alison's review by clicking here) and tremendous word-of-mouth from audiences. I had friends -- some comics geeks, others people who wouldn't know Two-Face from Clayface -- email me all weekend long raving about the film. I would say "Iron Man's" reign as the year's top grossing film (currently at $314 mil) is in serious jeopardy. TDK is on pace for much higher numbers. That extended time in theaters can only help the possible Oscar campaign for the late Heath Ledger and the film itself.

Lost in the Bat-mania (all the hoopla over TDK really did remind me of the fanfare surrounding 1989's "Batman") was that Hollywood had its busiest non-holiday weekend EVER.

That's largely due to TDK but also because of the surprisingly strong debut of "Mamma Mia!" It posted the best opening numbers of any movie musical in history with $27.6M. Fans of the smash hit Broadway show and ABBA in general obviously wanted a break from the superhero infestation at the multiplex, making Universal's counter-programming gamble pay off bigtime.

Third place was Will Smith's tireless "Hancock" with $14M ($191M total).

stepbrothers_beanstockd.jpgIn fourth was "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with $11.9M in its sophomore weekend ($43M total), while fifth place went to "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." But Universal's not thrilled that the film dropped 70% in its second frame, earning $10M for a $56.4M total. Doesn't take a genius to figure out most of its intended audience went to see TDK instead but still, that's an enormous drop that could jeopardize chances of a third Hellboy movie.

Next week, Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly return with more silliness in "Step Brothers," while Scully and Mulder return in "The X-Files: I Want To Believe."

More thoughts on mamm mia logo.jpg
Posted by Alison Bailes on 07/18/08 at 12:47 PM | Comments (0)

mamma mia on set.jpgIn reviewing “Mamma Mia!” on this week’s show, I didn’t have time to mention the sound design, which I found to be extremely distracting in its sterility. Not only were the songs obviously pre-recorded…and the actors lip-synching but all of the dialogue sounded looped. This had the effect of putting the viewer at a remove from the action. So, even though the scenery appeared picture-postcard perfect…I never felt like I was on the Greek island with the characters.

And the Oscar just may go to...
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 07/17/08 at 03:03 PM | Comments (0)

jokerheath.jpgThe talk of an Oscar nomination to the late Heath Ledger isn't just hype. His performance ranks right up there with Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs" and Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates in "Psycho." Ledger's costars have been answering questions about him in every interview, rather than hyping their own performances, as well they should.

lecter0103.jpgIt will add to the mystique of this movie, sure to be one of the biggest hits of the summer. There have been 6am screenings already sold out--can you imagine seeing ANY movie at that hour?--and tremendous buzz about the Imax version. We have Christian Bale and Sir Michael Caine on our show this week. And Bale will discuss talk of another sequel and his upcoming movies as well. Hope you tune in.

Some more sneak peek into the Christian Bale Interview

christian.jpgWe're fortunate to get some of the most talented people in Hollywood to drop by the RT set. From legends like Kirk Douglas and Harrison Ford to current superstars like Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett. Christian Bale is rapidly approaching that level. In fact, the unbelievably anticipated "The Dark Knight" could finally perch him firmly on the superstar ledge he seems to have been carefully avoiding the past few years. Once TDK opens, the decision will be out of his hands. He's incredibly versatile and has an uncanny talent for choosing good scripts. During an interview with Bale that airs this weekend on RT, Jeffrey asked the typically candid star about his good eye for scripts, and what his thoughts are on what seems like an inevitable third chapter in his Batman franchise.

'Kabluey'
Posted by Alison Bailes on 07/16/08 at 03:24 PM | Comments (0)

kabluey.jpgWe didn’t have time to review “Kabluey” (click for the trailer) on the show last week…so here are my thoughts on viewing the Indie comedy.

It is written and directed by Scott Prendergast…and he has cast himself as the lead…a sad-sack uncle to two absolute terrors whom he must care for while their depressed mother, Lisa Kudrow (one step from child abuse it seems) goes back to work. Inexplicably though, he also takes a job at her company, handing out fliers while dressed in a foamy, blue blob suit, which represents the company’s logo. The kids must be in day care.

While working, he meets several characters, namely Teri Garr (click to watch our interview with Ms. Garr) and Christine Taylor…but nothing very special happens. The humor is drawn out of long static takes of Kabluey stranded by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. It’s an image that at first will make you smirk. But it’s overused and then overused some more. Prendergast has a knack for wringing comedy from small moments though and most of these come at the expense of his character. It is amusing to see him struggle to hand out fliers in his fingerless, giant paws and ingeniously icky to see him take a bottle of beer into his suit. kabluey_aff2007_m.jpg
Obviously, the blandness and ridiculousness of the sterile corporate world is summed up by that spongy blue suit, and Prendergast also manages to satire small-town gossip and to raise our sympathy for women left at home while their husbands fight wars far from home. Although “Kabluey” isn’t a riot fest, I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Prendergast’s inept uncle Salman ends up connecting with his sister and her kids…and perhaps finding his own identity while hidden inside a walking corporate logo. Watch some of the clips from this movie right here!

The rocker trailer...didn’t rock my world
Posted by Alison Bailes on 07/16/08 at 01:04 PM | Comments (0)

The Rocker_Poster.jpgI am still looking forward to seeing “The Rocker” because I’m such a Rainn Wilson fan. But after seeing the trailer (click to watch) the other day, I have to admit my apprehension. The premise is excellent. Wilson plays a drummer for a 80s big hair band with the brilliant name Vesuvius. He’s fired and the band goes on to be huge. Twenty years later he’s still bitter but gets a second chance at glory with his nephew’s Emo band A.D.D.

christina applegate.jpgNow apparently Jane Lynch, Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Fred Armisen are in the film but you wouldn’t know it from the trailer, unless you freeze-frame it. Those actors would make me want to buy a ticket, but perhaps not the desired audience of teenage boys (although you’d think Applegate might be a draw!) Instead, we have endless jokes around Wilson being hit in the face or the groin…and pratfalls and silly slapstick.

I’m still going to go and see it…and I’m still hoping for a surprise. If Wilson can channel his inner Will Ferrell, and if the other actors are allowed to shine…then this “spinal tap” meets “school of rock” comedy just might make me laugh.

NEW ON DVD: The Bank Job
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 07/15/08 at 04:24 PM | Comments (0)

Jason Statham (click to watch our interview with Jason Statham here!) takes a break from his usual role as Hollywood's on-call tough guy to star in the based-on-true-events caper film "The Bank Job," which is now out on DVD and Blu-ray.
The story of a bank heist in London that turned into a scandal of Royal proportions and included shady government agencies, blackmail and murder, it's a whip-smart thriller featuring ace acting work by Statham (who doesn't throw a punch until the very end) and Saffron Burrows. laetitia-casta-guess-jeans.jpgVictoria's Secret model turned actress, Laetitia Casta, is ready to get her face onto the camera again for "Visages" (translated to "Face.") Variety reports the French beauty has joined Fanny Ardent, Lee Kang-sheng and Jean-Pierre Leaud in the new film from Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang.

Maybe "Speed Racer" didn't exactly quench the Wachowski Brothers' need for speed. But in their continuing effort to combine a family movie with Matrix style, Keanu Reeves and the Wachowski Bros. are to reunite with 'The Plastic Man.' That's according to Cinematical.com.

kate-hudson-400ds0713.jpgWith the craze of film gone broadway and broadway gone film and with this weekend's release of Mamma Mia as an example, get ready for Kate Hudson to star in the newest stage-to-screen adaptation, "Nine." According to eonline.com Hudson has joined the cast of director Rob Marshall's movie adaptation of the hit Broadway show.

John Malkovich and Mandate Pictures have teamed up in a two-year agreement to produce at least one film together per year. The two companies had teamed up on "Juno" and are now working on "Broken City." Read the full article at Variety.com

Warner Bros. and capcom are coming together, and this time the new picture they are working on is "Lost Planet," based on the Playstation video game. According to Variety the Japanese video game publisher will be co-financing the film.

Weekend Box Office - 'Hellboy II' Has Monster Opening
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/14/08 at 03:37 PM | Comments (0)

hellboy2poster.jpgPerhaps the riskiest of this summer's comic book-based films, "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" cashed in with a big $35.8 million debut during a week when the number of total moviegoers dropped (Not too surprising, since the post July 4th multiplex hangover is fairly common). That better-than-expected opening justifies the faith Universal Pictures (which like REEL TALK, is owned by NBC Universal) showed in the franchise by taking it off Sony's hands (after 2004's "Hellboy" only did modest business, the studio felt it wasn't worth making another one). It also shows the confidence they have in director Guillermo del Toro's growing popularity. This guy knows his monsters, the audience knows it and they come to the theaters to watch them come to life onscreen.

The film earned mostly solid reviews (Jeffrey & Alison disagreed on the film's merits, click here to watch their review), and all those clever ads with Ron Perlman as Hellboy popping up in promos with people like "Inside the Actor's Studio's" James Lipton didn't hurt, either.

will-smith-as-hancock.jpgIn second place was Will Smith's latest blockbuster "Hancock." It retained more than half its audience from its debut last week to add another $33M to its coffers. It's now earned $165M after just two weeks! Third place went to the family adventure "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with $20.5M. More than half that total came from the 854 theaters where the film was playing in Real 3D, which is the way to see this film if you can. As Alison said on last week's show (click here to watch), it's more a theme park experience than a theatrical one. Either way, it's a fun time.

Fourth place went to "WALL-E" with another $18.5M ($162.8M total) as it takes aim to be the latest Disney/Pixar collaboration to hit $200M. This can only help its chances if the studio goes ahead with plans to push the film for a Best Picture, instead of just a Best Animated Feature, Oscar nomination.

angelina-jolie-in-wanted.jpgAnother comic-book based Universal film bookends the Top 5. "Wanted" scored another $11.5M to up its ante to $112M after just three weeks. It's official: audiences love Angelina Jolie in kick-butt action roles. If I were her agent (GOD, I wish I was. Think of the commissions!!) I'd be lining up a handful of scripts where she gets to shoot or kick the crap out of tons of guys. Money in the bank.

BTW, you may have noticed there was no mention of the other big release this past weekend, Eddie Murphy's "Meet Dave." That's because the sci-fi based comedy exploded upon impact with a meager $5.3M opening. About the only consolation 20th Century Fox can take today is that the film only cost $60 million to make, much less than the $100M wasted on Murphy's other sci-fi comedy bomb, "The Adventure of Pluto Nash."

Next week, expect big audience turnout for the eagerly-awaited "The Dark Knight" and for a completely different theatrical experience, "Mamma Mia!" Will the ABBA musical turn out to be a brilliant counter-programming move? We shall see.

Remembering Evelyn Keyes
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 07/14/08 at 11:04 AM | Comments (0)

evelynkeyes2.jpgThe death this past week of Evelyn Keyes marks the passing of one of the last surviving stars of "Gone With The Wind," perhaps the biggest, most beloved movie epic of all time. It was one of the now classic films, which opened in 1939, the greatest year in movie history. She portrayed Suellen O'Hara, sister of Scarlett, the role that made Vivian Leigh a screen immortal. Ms. Keys' passing means that only Olivia de Havilland, who played the star-crossed Melanie in "Gone With the Wind", survives.

Scarlett O'Hara's Younger Sister.jpgYears later her memoir, "Scarlett O'Hara's Younger Sister" was a frank recounting of her many love affairs. Her husbands included director Charles Vidor, director of such great movies as "Gilda," "A Farewell to Arms" and "Hans Christian Anderson." However, when that marriage failed, she then married an even bigger name in movie history, John Huston. She was the girlfriend of Mike Todd, the flamboyant producer and director, whose "Around the World in 80 Days" remains another great film in screen history. But he left her for Elizabeth Taylor, only to die in a plane crash on a flight, his young wife Ms. Taylor decided at the last minute to skip.
evelynkeyes.jpgHowever, it gets even more complicated. Next up to the alter for Ms. Keys...here fourth husband, Artie Shaw, the band leader and serial marrier of Ava Gardner and Lana Turner, among others. Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Kirk Douglas were also among her romantic liaisons; great fodder for a book, no?
Ms. Keys' movie resume was impressive for an actress who was never what today we refer to as an "A-lister." "Here Comes Mr. Jordan," and as a character based on the great Ruby Keeler, "The Jolson Story" about Al Jolson, probably the greatest entertainer of his era. Larry Parks, whose career was ruined by the shameful blacklisting, had the title role.
wilder-itch.jpgShe came from the same town, Port Arthur, Texas, as Janis Joplin, who lived a much shorter, even more turbulent life. Also on her resume, by the way, was "The Seven Year Itch", starring Marilyn Monroe, the movie in which Ms. Monroe's pose over a New York City subway grating became one of the most famous shots in movie history, and which infuriated Monroe's then husband, Joe DiMaggio and began the unraveling of their nine month marriage.

sir ben kingsley

79687797.jpgYou can’t fault Sir Ben Kingsley for not working hard. With over 70 films on his resume, and at least 5 slated for upcoming release, he is a most prolific artist. However, some have criticized him for taking roles in silly comedies…as if they are beneath his regal status. I say, “Go Sir Ben!” To me, nothing was funnier than seeing him spoof his own precious Gandhi image in “The Love Guru” playing guru Tugginmypudha.

And I loved him as a pot-smoking, confused, middle-aged shrink in “The Wackness.” He was remarkable as an alcoholic hit man in “You Kill Me,” delivering his droll lines with the burnout of a mid-life crisis.Kingsley.jpg
He obviously enjoys his work and doesn’t seem to mind taking very small roles as well as starring ones. He also welcomes working with first time directors. But, for anyone who is missing Sir Ben the serious thespian…then watch out for “Elegy” coming this August, (click here for the trailer!) He should be rewarded with lots of award nominations for his role in this darkly, comic drama from director Isabel Coixet, it’s just the kind of film the academy loves.

Clarification
Posted by Alison Bailes on 07/11/08 at 10:46 AM | Comments (0)

Apparently, my Final Take on last week’s show was misconstrued by some viewers. As I listed all the different ways to see films that are now available to us, some people thought that I was advocating not going to the movie theater to see a film. Nothing could be farther from the truth! I still think it’s the best way to see a film (despite my absolute despair over the cell phones and texting that goes on!) That aside, seeing a film with an appreciative audience on a big screen, with surround sound is the bomb.

My final take served to express my surprise that movies continue to take in huge amounts of money at the box office, given that there are so many other options available to us. Netflix and movies on-demand have changed many viewers’ lives. And with huge flat screen TV’s, I can’t argue that sometimes it’s nice to crash out on the sofa and watch from home. And, now Sony is going to make it even easier to download entire movies with its new Bravia TV set, that will allow you to download films before their DVD release date.

Dorff Discusses 'Felon' co-star Kilmer

Brendan Fraser Talks "G.I. Joe"
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/10/08 at 09:52 AM | Comments (1)

Brendan-Fraser-Posters.jpgOne of the early favorites in the summer 2009 blockbuster sweepstakes is Paramount's "G.I. Joe" movie. It's already well into production, and it's been the talk of massive online speculation ever since the movie was green lighted. No big surprise. There are millions of us 'YO JOE!' geeks out there, and a lot of us spend way too much time sifting through and passing along information about projects we're excited about. Not all of that information may be accurate, however....

It's been reported for months that Brendan Fraser is playing Gung Ho in the movie. But when he visited our 30 Rock studios to talk up his new film "Journey to the Center of the Earth", he told a very different story. It was also, like most everything Brendan says, pretty funny in a crazy, rambling sort of way. Here it is:

the_ruins_500.jpgIf you're into horror movies, then you may be interested in checking out "The Ruins" now that it's out on DVD. Based on Scott Smith's best-selling novel, it's about a group of friends who get caught up in a nightmare while visiting an ancient Mayan burial site. The cast is of course full of telegenic young actors, like Jena Malone, Shawn Ashmore, Laura Ramsey and Jonathan Tucker. The DVD includes behind-the-scenes featurettes, an alternate ending and several deleted scenes. Check out some clips here...

The dark knight: the imax experience
Posted by Alison Bailes on 07/ 9/08 at 02:40 PM | Comments (0)

whysoserious.jpgI feel like I’m perhaps the only person who feels this way…but my enjoyment of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” was marred by the experience of suffering through it in IMAX. I loved Heath Ledger. In fact all the acting was impressive. And some of the optical effects were superb. But I had a difficult time following some of the action sequences.

I don’t know whether it was Nolan’s direction or the fact that sitting in an IMAX theater makes it almost impossible to take in the screen as a whole.

Mona.Lisa.smile.by.da.Vinci.jpgI equate it to looking at a piece of great art in a museum. You wouldn’t stand with your nose pressed up against the Mona Lisa or La Guernica. Being too close makes it impossible to appreciate the bigger picture. I felt like some of the scenes should have been enjoyed at a distance to understand all the dynamics and gain perspective on the action. Watching “The Dark Knight” in IMAX was an eye-ache inducing two and a half hours. I’d like to see it again in 35mm to better enjoy Nolan’s direction.

Closet Classic: The Counterfeit Traitor
Posted by Jeffrey Lyons on 07/ 9/08 at 11:25 AM | Comments (0)

traitor.jpgPlaying this weekend at one of New York's all-too-few revival houses, is 1962's "The Counterfeit Traitor" from director George Seaton. It's an espionage story everyone should see. Based on real events, William Franklin Beedle, the pride of O'Fallon, Illinois, who you know better as William Holden, plays expatriate American Eric Erickson, who held Swedish and American citizenship.

He was recruited by the Allies to spy for them, to gather information on Nazi Germany's industrial strength. Narrated by Holden, he made frequent forays into occupied Europe. He was also forced to humiliate his Jewish friend in front of Nazi officials in Stockholm to keep up appearances. Only after the war did he explain to his friend that he'd been forced to behave that terrible way. Lili Palmer plays another spy he met and with whom he fell in love. The look of Copenhagen and Berlin is terrifying, as is a public execution staged by the Nazis. The real prison where some of the events took place was used, and familiar but convincing character actors make this one of the finest cloak and dagger movies ever made. See it by all means! And don't worry, if you don't live in the NYC area, you can get it on DVD by clicking here.

stoploss-flag.jpgLike most movies about the Iraq War, "Stop-Loss" was seen by very few people during its brief appearance in theaters this past spring, despite solid reviews (including raves from Jeffrey & Alison). Now it's out on DVD. It features a great cast that includes Ryan Philippe, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt among others, and it's directed by Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don't Cry"). Here are some scenes from the movie...

New on DVD: Batman Begins on Blu-ray

Batman_Begins_Sunset-L.jpgWith anticipation growing like a Scarecrow-induced hysteria for "The Dark Knight," what better way to get worked up for the new Bat-movie than watching "Batman Begins" in high-definition glory. Christopher Nolan's genius reboot gets better with each viewing IMHO. Now it's available on Blu-ray for the first time in a single-disc version and a tricked-out Limited Edition set.

Both versions have the first six minutes of the new movie. The limited edition Blu-ray set also comes with all sorts of geeky goodies, such as a Batman Begins motion art lenticular, 32-page booklet, exclusive pix, script pages, story boards, post cards and even $7.50 'movie cash' toward the purchase of an adult ticket to see TDK.

miley and mandy.JPGIf you haven’t caught on yet, catch on now! Apparently, there is a HUGE online battle via YouTube between the M&M Cru and AC/DC Crew. That is… the Miley (yes, Miley Cyrus) and Mandy Cru (crew spelled with a “U”) versus the Adam Chu Dance Crew. AC/DC was formed by Jon Chu, the director of “Step Up 2: The Streets,” and dancer Adam Sevani, who played Moose in the movie. The rest of the dance crew is composed of the actors/dancers from the film.

acdccrew.JPGThis whole showdown began in April, when AC/DC stumbled across Miley’s YouTube videos of her and her professional dancer friend, Mandy, doing dance tricks, fooling around, and giggling in their hotel rooms. Basically, they had nothing better to do. AC/DC challenged them to an online dance-off. AC/DC submitted their video first. M&M responded with their video hoping to top the other and so on.

Guest appearances included Chris Brown, Amanda Bynes, Adam Sandler, Diana Ross, Ryan Seacrest, Lindsey Lohan, Brittany Snow, and Pedro from “Napoleon Dynamite” all dished out their best moves for the competition. With the celeb back-up, publicity from this virtual challenge has shot through the roof. This came just in time for this week’s DVD and Blu-Ray release of “Step Up 2 the Streets.” I am simply amazed how far we have come with advertising. This definitely puts a new spin on creative promotions. Advertising has definitely stepped up thanks to modern technology.

friends1.jpgOver the 4th of July weekend, rumors were flying about the “Friends” movie. We even posted it on our website. However, the latest report is that there will be no such film. A Warner Bros. rep has debunked all the rumors of the hoped-for reunion.

If you want more unconfirmed, unsubstantiated but still interesting enough to read movie stuff, check out The Movie Insider for more unconfirmed reports! Believe these rumors, if you dare!

Tim_Burton.jpgHere’s another rumor, this one about casting for Tim Burton’s live version of Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Apparently, 23 year-old Ryan Nikole Parker has finally gotten her big break to star as Alice. She has fulfilled minor roles listed in her IMDB resume, but is still in the works for bigger roles. Burton plans to complete the film in 2010, since it was held off for his “Sweeny Todd” promotions.

Check out this tournament to determine the best super hero.

Spike Lee is going to shoot the Broadway musical "Passing Strange" for a TV special that will air on an as-yet undetermined cable network. Read more here! Great show, BTW. If you're coming to NYC, GO SEE "PASSING STRANGE!"

passingstrange.jpgB-movie queen Adrienne Barbeau (Escape From New York, Swamp Thing) has a new book out called "Vampyres of Hollywood" It's a supernatural film noir that posits that vampires have been spreading falsehoods about their bloodsucking legacy (like the whole 'they can't step into the sunlight' thing) to keep us pesky humans off their backs.

Weekend Box Office - Where There's A 'Will', There's a Hit
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/ 7/08 at 05:03 PM | Comments (0)

will-smith-picture-1.jpgWill Smith's latest Independence Day outing, "Hancock", took in a Big Willy-sized $107 million during its five-day opening weekend (it hit theaters Wed). Big deal. Was there anyone who didn't expect "Hancock" to do well? Smith is a slam-dunk earner no matter what the project, or the critical response. Mostly negative reviews did nothing to hurt the film's box office. Whether it impacts the film's lasting power will play out in the next few weeks.

Second place went to "WALL-E" which earned $33M ($128M overall). Genius move BTW, by Disney/Pixar to release the movie last week and take advantage of the big Fourth of July moviegoing weekend.
"Wanted" was third with $20.6M ($90.7M total), with "Get Smart" still going strong with another $11.1M added for a $98.1M total. Fifth place went to "Kung Fu Panda" with $7.5M ($193.3M total).

A few notable developments:

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is now at $306 million, making the 4th Indy pic the 2nd movie this year ("Iron Man" is the other) to crack the $300 mil barrier.

Picturehouse outsmarted itself by platform releasing "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl." The film earned only $3.6 million as it expanded across the country. It was playing in NYC exclusively the previous two weekends. Most industry observers think the film wouldn't have been lost in the multiplex shuffle if it had gone wide back on June 20. Too bad. Good G-rated live-action movies are rare, and if this one tanks, don't expect many others.

Finally, the 90s indie ensemble "The Wackness" was the biggest per-screen average winner. It scored $24,166 at each of of its six theaters for a solid $145,000 weekend. It could join "The Visitor" as the only indie sleeper hits of the summer.

MOVIE THEMES REAX
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/ 7/08 at 04:28 PM | Comments (0)

1978 Superman movie.jpgNothing gets a rise out of people faster than LISTS. No matter what it may be -- favorite movies, books, athletes or antacids -- when you start ranking anything, you're guaranteed to fire people up.

That's kind of the point, actually, to spark some sort of reaction. Which is why we posted our Top 25 Movie Scores last week. Obviously, it's a totally subjective list since there is no way to quantify in any scientific manner what makes a great movie score. Everyone's different, everyone listens to things in their own way and decides for themselves what makes for an unforgettable theme.

titanic_02.jpgWe're already starting to hear from people with strong comments about some of our picks -- and some of our omissions. We've heard about the exclusion of the music from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and James Horner's 'Titanic' music. To me, the most memorable music in that film - besides Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" -- is the Irish dance tune played in the below-deck scene where Kate & Leo let their hair down. The rest was....ehh.

Perhaps the loudest complaints come from those who feel John Williams' score to 1978's "Superman" should have made the list.

You'll get no argument from me on that one. I think it's the best super hero movie score ever, and there isn't a close runner-up. The music from Richard Donner's film fits the character so well, you can't think of Superman without that music in the background. Bryan Singer obviously agreed, because when he did "Superman Returns" he didn't even bother to commission new music -- he used the original score!

reeveisraelfly.jpgSo why didn't it make our list? Everyone has their favorites. Jeffrey likes what he likes, Alison likes what she likes, our director Susan ...well, she's a true film buff with a taste toward the down to earth and downbeat. She's not really into the whole 'You will believe a man can fly' thing.

Around the Reel Talk hallways, men in tights are my territory (er, that didn't come out exactly right). I like big, loud, fast-paced, CGI-laced, explosion-heavy movies. But it wasn't just my list. It was a compilation and some worthy candidates simply didn't make the cut. And since no one else here offered it up, well...consider it No. 26.

simpsons_family.jpgAny others that could've/should've made the cut? Which ones do you think didn't deserve a spot? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know. Also, let us know what other lists you'd like to see us post here.

AND BTW, I stand by my comments about Danny Elfman. I'll give him "The Simpsons" TV score, but most of his movie music is completely interchangeable. Not a memorable one in the bunch. So there.

Most Memorable Film Scores
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/ 4/08 at 01:01 PM | Comments (0)

notes.jpg(Warning. The following post could have you humming certain themes to the point of insanity)

Where in the name of John Williams have all the good movie scores gone? Special effects work may be raising the bar of excellence on a weekly basis due to the Blockbuster of the moment, but movie music has lost its way. Filmmakers seem content to just use a play list from their iPod as background music instead of searching for the transcendent score that will stay in your head, long after the credits have rolled (thanks a lot, John Hughes and Quentin Tarantino!). Even the films that use composers settle for the type of generic, interchangeable fare Danny Elfman's been churning out for nearly 20 years. Where's the bombast, the pageantry? Silence those computerized rhythms and give us some horns! Jeffrey and Alison and the rest of the RT crew searched our memory banks for the Top 25 most memorable movie scores. They are...CLICK HERE!

Our 'Friends' Are Coming Back

Friends.jpgAfter the large success of the recent TV series gone cinema, 'Sex and the City' it looks like 'Friends' is on the same track. According to The Daily Mail Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey are coming back to 'be there for you' all over again.

Even though, when Alison asked David Schwimmer in an interview back in March (click here to watch) about returning to his character Ross, he crushed any hopes of a 'friendly reunion' because he felt the ending was too perfect t o mess with.

" I don't know I just don't want to mess with it. It just felt really right , you know the way it ended news_friendssag05.jpgand the story and I can't think of one good reason to kind of re-open it in a way or re-visit it."

However, It seems that the ladies of New York...Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda proved that a successful TV show can result in an enormously successful movie, and influenced Warner Bros. enough to convince the 6 'Friends' stars to reunite on the silver screen.

ferrell cohen kiss.jpgLooks like Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell will be reunited onscreen for the first time since they lip-locked at the MTV Movie Awards.

According to Variety Columbia pictures has greenlighted an untitled comedy about Sherlock Holmes and his crime-solving partner Watson. This script will be written by Etan Cohen ("Tropic Thunder") and produced by Judd Apatow ("Super Bad," "Knocked Up.") Cohen is on board to play Holmes and Ferrell will play Watson.

I can't even imagine what kind of shenanigans this duo will be up to, but I can't wait to find out! Whaddya think?

DVD Roundup: 'Batman: The Movie'
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/ 1/08 at 11:21 AM | Comments (0)

batmanthemovie.jpgGood news for fans of the original "Batman" TV show. No, the camp classic still not been cleared for DVD release. A combination of rights issues and in-house concerns over at Time-Warner have kept the show from being collected on DVD, and there's no immediate resolution on the horizon.

On the bright side, 'Batman: The Movie', the 1966 spinoff film of the show, is making its Blu-ray debut Tuesday, July 1st. I've seen this movie about a dozen times and it never ceases to entertain me. The Blu-ray version comes in widescreen format with remastered sound. It also gives you the option to cut out the dialogue and just watch the film with the score only. Extra features include "Batman: A Dynamic Legacy", "Caped Crusaders: A Heroes Tribute," a 360-degree tour of the Batmobile, and commentary from stars Adam West and Burt Ward.

While I'm a huge fan of the current Bat-films and believe Batman/Bruce Wayne works best as a dark, serious character, how can you not love Adam West with the Bat-belly? That and the shark he fights off in this film are worth the price of the Blu-ray. Here are some clips if you somehow aren't convinced you should buy it:

DVD Roundup: 'Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control'
Posted by Michael Avila on 07/ 1/08 at 11:12 AM | Comments (0)

bruceandlloyd.jpgOne problem I have with the movie version of "Get Smart" is that two great supporting characters, the CONTROL lab geeks Bruce and Lloyd, get very short shrift. The few times they are onscreen, they're hilarious. I wanted more lab geeks.

Turns out Warner Bros. apparently minimized their screen time on purpose. The two characters (Bruce is played by 'Heroes' star Masi Oka, Lloyd by Nate Torrence) star in their own direct-to-dvd adventure, "Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control."

Billed as an industry first, the feature-length film contains a parallel storyline to the plot in the current "Get Smart" movie. In a nutshell, the two lab guys have to locate a missing piece of CONTROL technology. The dvd extras include featurettes on the real science behind the crazy gadgets in the movie, including the micro-plane, as well as tongue-in-cheek 'confessionals from the cast and crew.

"Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control" arrives on DVD & Blu-ray Tuesday, July 1st. Check out some clips here:

Reel Talk Mixtape: Fourth of July
Posted by Perri Nemiroff on 07/ 1/08 at 09:45 AM | Comments (0)

fourthofjiuly.jpegWith a LONG weekend to look forward to, there leaves plenty of time to catch a new flick that will be released this Fourth of July weekend, or maybe even time to rent an older movie that was released on the Fourth of July. Either way here's a little mix of movies to see if you haven't seen them already, and a list of what to look out for.

As seen in“The Patriot,” Mel Gibson stars in this period film, which is centered on our actual fight for independence. “The Patriot” is loosely based on real events that took place during the American Revolution. The filmmakers received guidance from the Smithsonian Institute on some of the period details, but took some obvious creative liberties for the sake of drama and action. the_patriot_01.jpg Fittingly, “The Patriot” opened during the July 4th weekend in 2000. Other big related successes include the 1996 release of “Independence Day” starring Will Smith. It was dubbed the “single greatest 4th of July opening ever,” banking over $50 million in that weekend alone! Since then, however, an action/adventure film took its number one spot in the running. In 2004, “Spider-Man 2” grossed over $80 million in the box office.

Nonetheless, Smith will try his good ole' American luck with this year’s “Hancock.” This will be his fifth movie release during the Fourth of July week. His other films include “Wild, Wild West," "Independence Day" (as mentioned earlier,) and both “Men in Black” films, dubbing Will Smith as “Mr. Fourth of July.”

littlegun.jpgOn another note, some films that will be in production during and beyond this fourth of July weekend are...

James Brolin talks to the LA Times about playing President George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's upcoming "W." The film is currently in production with an eye on being released in October! Good luck with that.

Variety reports that a sequel to last year's surprise blockbuster "300" is being planned. Word is it would be based on a new graphic novel Frank Miller is writing, and Zack Snyder says he would be interested in directing it. No word yet on how they'll get around one pesky little plot point -- namely, that all but one of the "300" DIED!

epagedberrymore_080116_79007799_73861376.jpgDrew Barrymore is making her directorial debut and co-starring with "Juno" Oscar nominee Ellen Page in the roller derby comedy "Whip It!" according to The Hollywood Reporter. Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell round out the cast. The movie starts shooting this summer.

THR also reports that Helena Bonham Carter is eyeing a 'small but pivotal' role in the currently in-production "Terminator Salvation," a continuation of the Terminator franchise starringChristian Bale, who said over the weekend that he almost didn't sign on for another tentpole pic. We're glad he's onboard. If Bale's in it, we're there!boltphotosmall.jpg
Finally, check out the new trailer for Disney's upcoming animated movie "Bolt." John Travolta is the voice of a dog who thinks he's a super pup ...only he's really an actor in a TV show. It opens Thanksgiving weekend.
